Todd,

As one of the thankful recipients of your CD manual, I happen to have the 2001 factory book. I'll flip through it tonight and see what I can find for you.

Gee Todd, I coulda sworn you thought the overhead computer was a stupid waste of time and money that only idiots would want?

Matter o' fact, here's a quote from you..

"That's the ONLY thing I DIDN'T get when I ordered my quad, was the overhead computer-IMHO, it's worthless, no MPG accuracy. I'm a catamaran sailor, and if I can't tell what general direction I'm going in, then I should be shot anyway. NOw if it has trip meters, like my dash does anyway, that may be useful, but I already have one."

You can see the actual post here:

There's more flaming posts from Todd on the users of the overhead computer all thru these forums. I don't blame you for wanting this feature Todd, I love mine, I just mind you slamming people for having/wanting this and then wanting it yourself...

Since I have an ’03 and you have an ’01, my guess is they changed the wire colors just to mess with our minds. I'll present what I found, maybe to just give you some ideas. Okay, here is what my 2003 Dakota shop manual has for the overhead console connectors:

Base (what I have and what I think your truck came with) connector:
1. yellow wire with violet tracer = interior lamp driver
2. pink wire with no tracer = fused +12V (battery)
3. yellow wire with no tracer = courtesy lamp driver

So, if your truck is like mine (remember, I have an ’03) you should have one wire with +12 all the time, and two other wires that are either +12 or ground depending on the state of that circuit (i.e., if the interior lights should be ON then the voltage between wire #2 and wire #1 above should be +12V). Since it is a 'driver' and not a real ground it may not test on an Ohm meter as ground.

Premium (what you picked up when you got the fancy overhead computer) connector:
1. yellow wire with violet tracer = interior lamp driver
2. pink wire with no tracer = fused +12V
3. no wire
4. no wire
5. violet wire with yellow tracer = PCI bus
6. dark blue wire with white tracer = fused +12V (ignition switch run/start)
7. yellow wire with no tracer = courtesy lamp driver
8. no wire
9. orange wire with no tracer = panel lamps feed
10. no wire
11. no wire
12. black wire with light green tracer = ground

Here is my guess: to run the compass you need a switched +12V (off when the engine is off) and an unswitched +12V (on all the time). The first would light the display (so it wouldn’t drain the battery when you are parked) and the second would run the memory for what region you are in. You would also need a full time ground (not the !@#$ 'driver' grounds).

With the base unit, you only have an unswitched +12V. I’m not sure how you would get a switched +12V up there (pull wires?). For a ground (which you also need), I can see attaching a lug to part of the roof (scrape off a little paint around the connector).

Of course, this was all probably a waste as the wires for the ’03 are NOT red, black, red but yellow, pink, yellow.

I hope my post is not a case of TMI (too much information).

Oh yea, and the back part of the larger console is TAPED (yes, double stick tape) to the roof. No brace, no hard points, just good ol' double stick tape. Talk about cheap.

Mr. Funny,

Right on! You're right, before my new years resolution, sarcasm was my middle name. Now I've got a new job-love it, a fairly new son, 8 months old, and made a resolution to respect others posts a bit more on this forum. Like the manual tranny thing, I've got it, and it's in the minority, and I CAN understand people wanting an auto, for whatever reason they have. Just an example. If I offended anyone, at anytime, I apologize-that's bad karma.

I didn't know her whole breast was gonna be hanging out!-J/K

And Mr. Funny,

I got tired of looking at the 'clip', when for only about $70, I'm looking at the puter and lights. Helps the aesthetics (sp?). I really only want the compass, and a light display.

Doug 4.7,

Awesome, your explanaton helps a great deal! I'm saving it now, with this, I'll get it hooked up for the compass. Again, thanks for your time!

Todd, not to dis' your work, but it sure seems like an awful lot of effort for functionality that can be had with a compass/mirror or a PNI/Wayfarer compass/temp setup.

FYI, I bought a PNI for my Dad for Xmas for a bit less then $30.

...but, to each their own, continue to keep us updated. Later.

Its all good Todd. I admit to being taken aback by your stongly negative opinion of the overhead console after it was one of the must have features when I was searching for my new truck. But I must admit that I've been one to change my mind on more than a few occasions too! So no hard feelings and sorry for busting you out so hard, I couldn't resist reminding you of your earlier opinion. :0) Your resolution sounds like a good one, I should probably adopt it as well! Good luck with the install.

Here we go:

Description of the pin connector wires are the same for the '01 (according to the manual).

But,

These are the colors and designations for the trucks wire harness end. There is nothing in the manual indicating the wire diagram for the acessory end itself (or any acessory from what i can see). This is the confusion with the wire colors.

Apparently, the connector end of your console was cut off creating your headache.

I pulled mine down for a peek. Here is the scoop:

3 wires come out of the computer itself. Mine are all black. 4 other wires are for the lighting and garage door openers.

In the mating connector pins:

1. Black for the lighting
2. Pink for the lighting
3. -
4. -
5. Black3 for computer
6. Black1 for computer
7. yellow for lighting
8. -
9. Red for lighting
10. -
11. -
12. Black2 for computer

Looking at the back of the computer, the 3 Black wires are coming out, off center to the right.
From left to right are Black1, Black2, Black3 that correspond to pins 6,12, and 5 respectively.

Other than pin 5 (PCI bus) you should be in business.

Let me know the results.

Looks like all the overhead computer needs is a switched power supply and the PCI. So that means any information stored in the overhead computer is either lost each time you turn the truck off or stored in nonvolatile memory. Or maybe its stored somwhere else and the PCI sends it back to the overhead computer (reboots?)

On the '03 Dak (mine), you can access the PCI line at pin #2 on the Data Link Connector (the DRBIII interface connector under/near the steering wheel). For reference, +12 should be at pin #16 and ground should be at pins # 4 & 5. That way you can hook the PCI to the console and see what happens.

BTW, the PCI is a 10 kHz signal at 0-7.5V. Why 7.5 and not either 12 or 5? Ask DC.

I love to reverse engineer systems...

I didn't think the compase chinga-diro was anything special when I got my truck.

But we just got a 2004 Grand Caravan a few weeks ago. It came with absolutely everything, including the overhead computer.

We did some mixed driving, in Phoenix, up above Payson, back to Phoenix. Overhead comp said like 20.2 MPG. Filled the tank back up and it calculated with the miles driven to 20.22 MPG. How about that?!!

The built in garage door openers comes in handy too. If it was cheap enough, I'd be interested in installing it into my 2003 Dakota as well.
