Subject: How to keep truck from "dieseling" ??
IP: Logged

Message:
Now that its getting colder my truck will often "diesel" after I turn it off. I assume this can't be good for it (sure doesn't sound good) and so I was wondering what I can do to help prevent this from happening.

Also, I just recently got a tune up, replaced all the filters, spark plugs and wires, and the distrib cap and rotor. Then 2 days ago I was driving on the highway and I blew a radiator hose and it sprayed all the antifreeze/coolant all over the engine compartment. Ever since then it has been running very rough. What can I do? The new distrib cap got soaked and even though I dried off everything as best I could it doesn't sound good at all. How much would it cost to get all my hoses replaced? Should I get the cap+rotor replaced again? I don't have much money to spend, I'm just trying to do what I can to keep it running in good shape. Thanks very much

Do you have a CARBERATOR?
Are you REVING the engine just before turning off? (VERY bad for engine... it washes the oil off of the rings)

I cannot see how fuel-injection can diesel when the power to the injector(s) is turned off.

If you have fuelinjection... check for a leaky injector.

As a quick fix.... turn off the engine in DRIVE then shift to PARK. (the xtra load on the engine in DRIVE may force it to stop running.)

Hi... yes it has a carbeurator. I do notice that it I
let it sit and idle for a few moments before I
turn it off it doesn't happen as much.

Do you have any idea about my other
problem? It seems to have gotten really bad
gas mileage this past tank since the hose
blew (300 miles vs normal 380+ off a full tank)

I used to own a 1987 Plymouth Horizon (2.2L, carb) that used to diesel.

When I first bought the vehicle, it didn't diesel at all, but the garage I took it to (Good Year)claimed that the carb needed to be replaced, so they put in a rebuilt one. After that, the vehicle dieseled like crazy. I got so fed up that I bought a brand new carb ($650 CDN) from the dealer, and that helped reduce the dieselling quite abit. Still not content, I got the dealer to see what they could do to eliminate the dieselling, but all they could do was reduce the frequency the vehicle dieseled.

I tried using a can of CCC (Combustion Chamber Conditioner at the dealer), cleaning out the carb, adjusting the idle on the carb, but to no avail.

Your best bet is if you have replaced the carb in your Dak with a rebuilt one, get rid of it and see if you can buy a brand new carb. That is what I did on my Horizon and it seemed to reduce the dieselling quite abit.

At that time, I was also looking into the Pro-Injection from Holley, but they did not make such a product for the Horizon.

From my personal experience, I don't think you can get rid of dieselling, but you can reduce the frequency it occurs.

Hey i have not had this problem with my trucks but have run into it with other engines. Try run top grade fuel see if that makes it stop? Also check your plugs are you running lean, if you are they would be a white instead of a golden brown. The other possiblity which could slove your problem is your timing if you run high grade gas and it goes away your timing could be advanced and maybe incorrect and need to be retarded. Check this stuff out and see what your mechanic has to say. good luck

When you shut off your vehicle the engine still keeps running for a couple of seconds.

Have your timing adjusted, it it too advanced.
This will cure what ails you.

This usually means that you have "hot spots" on the piston tops...When they are glowing they provide a "spark"

Where do you buy your gas, AM/PM-Arco, ma & pa shops? That is the crappiest gas around and it will make my truck (chevy) diesel.
When it happened to me at first I thought I had a problem with the truck but after making the decision to pay .10 cents more per gal for good gas (Chevron, Texaco), the problem went away.

Switch to a higher grade of fuel. That should stop it all together. Also you may have a vacume leak so check with a vacume gauge. And yes if the truck runs like crap now after it all got sprayed change the distributar cap and rotor.

Also since it didnt deisel before you did your service maybe you got the wrong spark plugs.

I would bet that you have a vacume leak or you are getting cheap gas. It sounds like your engine is aging and might have a gasket leak around the intake manifold. Its not serious but either you change it or run a better fuel. Go to 89 octain and if it still does it go to 91.

Until you fix whatever is causing it, shut if off in gear. Works best with a standard trans, just turn the key off and let out clutch pedal just enough to load the engine. It will shut off. I agree with others about bad timing.

It is not possible for ignition TIMING to cause dieseling. With the key turned off... all power to the sparkplugs is diaabled.... THERE IS NO SPARK! Thus... the ignition timing is irrelivent.

The CAUSE of dieleling is often a NOT SPOT in the cumbustion chamber igniting the FA mixture. There are 4 causes for this

1) Carbon deposits in combustion chamber
2) Too-Hot sparkplugs that are "red hot"
3) Low-grade fuel that ignites at too-low temp.
4) The "dashpot" on the carberator is not functioning. (special mecinism that seals the butterfly valve when key is turned off.... your carb may not have this feature)

But over advanced timing can cause the engine to run hot, right? And cause poor combustion? Carbon buildup then becomes a possibility.

thanks for the suggestions.... I run regular
gas, usually bought from Shell but will try 89
next time.

how would I check for a vaccum leak? if I have
one, what does it do? same with a head
gasket leak?

best way to clean carbon deposits?

since the hose blew and soaked everything in
antifreeze not only is it running rough but my
radio is also acting funny... it will randomly
jump to my first preset channel. any ideas of
what hot wet that wasn't supposed to and
what I can do to fix it?

thx again for all the help

an easy way to check for a vacuum leak is to spray starting fluid around your vacuum hoses, if there is a leak the engine will rev up a little. As far as the other stuff I have no idea.

In addition to what Bruce P. had to say you should check to see if your carb has a fuel shut off selonoid. This cuts all fuel flow to your carb after you shut off the ignition.

causes of dieseling on a fuel injected engine
IP: Logged

Message:
I just replaced my engine in my 97 dodge dakota, it is dieseling everytime I shut it off, what could be causing this to happen? Before the original engine went it was also dieseling, I changed injectors, checked timing and other componets on the throttle, but have had no luck in finding the reason it is dieseling, anyone have any ideas?
