Subject: Overhead puter install....
IP: Logged

Message:
I read for an hour in the archives.

I even e-mailed some people that had said they had some good info.

I have an 01, SLT, that comes with everything except leather, AND the overhead puter.

I bought one off the forum for $80.-new.

I'll try and install it soon.

I'll check the Dak shop manual I have a cd copy of, but:

Anyone have any definite tips, mine seems to only have three wires to it.

Thanks in advance,

Todd Bouton

Todd, I have an 04 and am planning on doing the same thing. I'm not sure of the particulars on the 01, but I have a factory service manual for the 04 and it seems that it has 7 wires to it. I can send you a CD copy of the manual if you think it would help any. Sorry I can't be of much more help than that. By the way, it was me that made the smart ass post on the "tint" thread a week or so ago, and I apologize for that, it's no excuse, but I was drunk as all hell. Once again, I apologize!

Matt,

No problem. My new years resolution, is to quit using sarcasm in my replies sometimes. ;-)

I have the 2002 CD, and have been reading it tonight. The wiring diagrams are kinda hard to figure out. I bought a supposed 01, new, puter, that only has three wires, and the ends are bare, and it plugs into the system.

After reading the section, did you know that the compass has to be calibrated by zones, that are listed in the manual?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated, and if anyones wondering, I've scoured the old posts.

And get this,

the only plug, comes out of it, and has three wires! The two outside wires are red, and the middle one is black. Two red wires?

And how does it do all it's supposed to from only three wires?

Help!

Is there perhaps a female jack on the module itself that a truck harness would plug into? That does seem odd to only have three wires.

And the zones are because of the difference in true/magnetic north. Across the country we operate by magnetic north and it's programmed via true north (or vice versa), hence the need for zones.. I'm in zone 9 btw. :)

I saw that in my manual for my 02. It was set for the proper zone from my dealer, so I didn't mess with it. If you need an extra set of eyes on the wiring diagrams, let me know! You can send me the diagram and I can give it a shot. I do work on the electronics side of the Minuteman III ICBM weapon system that our Air Force currently uses, so I have some schematic experience.

Jeremy, to be honest, I'm not completely sure. As far as my '04 QC goes, it looks like a lot of work. For mine, I'm going to have to do a lot of wiring tracing and add wires here and there. Not too sure that I'm going to go for it yet, I've got to get some time off first.

I've looked at it well, no other ports or jacks for anything.

Matt, I may e-mail you the shematic. But being involved in nat'l security, after you tell me, don't kill me.

I think I can manage to spare your life in this case. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to figure out the schematic, but I can give it a shot! I did read in another post a month or so back, that the console only used 4 wires: +12V, -12V, Ground, and one PCI Bus from the central timer unit. (behind driver's side kick panel. If you still want me to take a look though, send it on over.

Just something I noticed about your last post (Matt), how do you get -12V in a 12V DC system? I'm not saying its wrong, but it takes some work to generate -12V from a +12V system where all you have is +12 and ground. My guess is DC would not go to that trouble and so the -12V wire is labeled wrong.

Doug,

hey, this is my thread!

J/K

I think he means, 12V constant, 12V switched, and a ground. That's what I read from the earlier posts.

Matt,

I e-mailed you the entire manual this am, I couldn't get it to cut and paste pages out of the Adobe pdf format.

The 12V switched & 12V constant sounds much better.

I was just reading the thread (for the information just in case I want to add the computer) and wanted to point out a possible problem.

I'd hate for someone to read this thread and then start looking for that -12V line in their Dak....

Doug, I was only relaying what I saw in an earlier post, I agree that DC would probably not use a system like that, and I'm really not sure why they'd care about a neg. voltage anyway. Silly Billy, YES, the resale value would jump to about $7 million, depending on market, and would most certainly increase HP. But I don't know many areas that have enough room to travel at 15,000 MPH. Todd, I didn't receive the email as of 8:30 Central. I'm wondering if maybe it's too big for my ISP to accept

I have a 2002 chop manual CD, and have Given 10 copies of it away last week via US mail.

But I have a 2001, and apparently, the overhead computer wiring changed from 2000, 2001, and again in 2002.

Could someone please email me the wiring diagram page for the overhead console?

TIA,

Todd Bouton

Matt, I bought an 04 ClubCab this week, would it be
possible to get a copy of your service manual?
Also, I haven't looked yet, but are there 3rd party
computers and/or overhead compartments that look
factory, or close? Anyone have experience with any of them?
My '00 had the overhead compartment (but no computer),
and I really miss it. I assume the places to secure the
overhead are above the headliner and just not used.
(and I shouldn't have any problem receiving a large file)
Thanks!

Todd, it sure seems to me that I recall posts in the past where a couple of the Dodge techs said that unless the computer was included in the factory order, that the wiring harness was not capable of plugging in the stock overhead one.

As I remember, the inputs for the milage (gas usage and odo) and the temp sensor were not there, and that you'd need the wiring harness from a factory wired truck to get it done right. Now maybe the clock and compass would work, as it seems that all those need is a power source.

I realize you've searched, but that is my recollection. If you are successful, I believe that you will be the first. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Lurkin,

I agree. I was just wondering how to hook the power wires to the wires that were alredy there, so the Compass would work.

For all the other sensors, It has to be wired to the PCI bus, where the apporpriate sensors and readouts communicate via the same line digitally.

I'll work on that one later.
