Does anyone know if all 02 quad cabs have the same wiring harnesses? I want to put in a overhead display and i was wondering if the temp sensors and fuel milege sensor wires are in. Also i want to upgrade to the heated mirrors and I know the wires are in the doors but are the plugs it the dash for the switch.

If you want this for gas milage save your money, the gas milage on the overhead consol is so far off I almost ripped the thing out of my truck. It was telling me I was getting 13.5 mpg when I was getting 15.5. I know its still sad milage but dont get it if you want it to tell you the gas milage. If you want it for direction or trip time than its good.

Hey dude,

The autodimming mirror in our trucks is made by Gentex. Their NVS line is the same used in nearly every high end car you can think of (Audi, Bentley, BMW, Mercedes-Benz):

Check it out here:

http://www.gentex.com/automotive_products2.html

Mito Corp sells them along with some other nifty sh1t.Buy it here:

http://www.mitocorp.com/nvsmirro.htm

JC Whitney also sells them. Forget about the factory setup if you don't have it. This mirror is better as far as information aquisition is concerned and the mileage info is way off on the factory unit anyway.

The factory fuel mileage calculator uses real-time data provided by the PCM to instantaneously ESTIMATE mileage based on the input from various sensors and the fuel map being used. It's nothing more than an educated guess and was never meant to be extremely accurate.

'not meant to be extremely accurate'?

that's the understatement of the year!

I think it's hilarious, when people post about their MPG, and use their overhead oxymoronic display as their results!

That's the ONLY thing I DIDN'T get when I ordered my quad, was the overhead computer-IMHO, it's worthless, no MPG accuracy. I'm a catamaran sailor, and if I can't tell what general direction I'm going in, then I should be shot anyway. NOw if it has trip meters, like my dash does anyway, that may be useful, but I already have one.

I also like the 'miles per tank' people. They're too lazy to divide miles by gallons since their last fillup, so they talk about it in miles per tank! If you get gas exactly at the same point on the gauge, exactly, then that may be accurate.

But c'mon, I think most people just divide it in their head, accurately, in about 30secs.

I for one like the overhead console. I guess it's because I like "gadgety" things.

Todd, the overhead console provides compass/temperature, average mpg, instantaneous mpg, elapsed time, distance to empty, and trip odometer. It also contains 3 Homelink transmitters, for garage doors, lights, alarm systems, etc. I've never used that feature.

I believe that the mpg is accurate, to a point. The instantenous mpg seems correct, it's the average mpg that can be off at times. If you're sitting still, the instant mpg is 0, which is technically correct. Since you're not traveling any "miles", the mpg can't be anything but 0. But, if you coasted ever so slightly at around 1 or 2 mph, the mpg would be alot higher than 0. So, that 0 mpg while sitting still really screws up the average calculations. So, if you do alot of stop and go driving, the average mpg will be too low. If you do strictly highway driving, it will be pretty accurate.

The instantaneous mpg is really cool. I can really tell where the sweet spot is for good mpg. I can also tell how much affect climbing hills or towing is on mpg more accurately that waiting to average it out on the next fillup.

The distance to empty (DTE) feature is also very neat. Although a tad conservative, it's pretty accurate as well, as long as you understand how the DTE estimate is calculated. I never have to guess how much further I can drive on a tank of fuel. It's a very handy feature while traveling.

Now, are any of these features essential? No, of course not. But, they are nice and not as useless as you think.

Andrew,

I would think you could tell when your engine is in it's 'sweet spot', I know I can.

The DTE feature, again, an estimate, unless it sticks something in the tank! The low fuel light, kinda lets you know you're at about 1/8 a tank.
My over head came with the compartment, and my garage door opener is velcro-ed in there.

Glad you like yours 8')

Todd, without driving the exact same speed over the course of an entire fuel tank, how can you determine whether 55, 60, 65, or 70 mph gives you the best fuel mileage? One would think the slower you go, the better your mileage. But that's not the case. I guess if I had my truck long enough, I might have run an entire tank at each of those speeds to be able to figure it out. But so far, I haven't. Also, when traveling on long trips, a couple of mph and mpg makes a big difference. It's very easy to see the effect of bumping that cruise up from 65 to 70 to 75 to 80.

The DTE is an estimate, but it's constantly updating the estimate based on the fuel remaining and the instantaneous mpg. It is a little conservative - when it gets down to 2-4 miles to empty, there's about half a gallon left in the tank. It's just really handy knowing that I have "30 miles" until I need to fill up. Around town, that number fluctuates because of stop and go driving. On the highway at constant speeds, it's pretty darn good. If it says I can go 30 miles, I don't need to fill up before 25!

And I don't have a garage door, so those Homelink features are worthless to me!

I like my overhead console, you like that you don't have it. That's what makes America great.

Am I missing something? My new 2003 QC overhead display does not have an instantaneous MPG. It does have the average MPG. FYI, I have two garage doors and LOVE the Homelink option.

My Quad did not come with the computer, so I purchased a Gentex Mirror with the compass, outside temp, and auto dimm. I love it.

Z-Tube, R/T Rims, SSB Rear Disc Conversion, Alpine Head-Unit, Infinity Kappa Speakers, SilverStar Headlights, HO Cams & Intake installed.

Got H.O. ?
