They are both sweet trucks. I would take either, as most of you would. However, some of you are showing some insecurity with your purchase.

I love how discussions like this really bring out the clowns.

By the way, I four wheel and rock crawl a lot(in my 82 toyota), and I have never seen a Dakota on a trail. I am sure there are some, but very few and far between. Maybe if some of you guys would start putting your truck where your mouth is, this debate would die...

Yeah, you don't see that many Daks out there, cause they simply have alot of shortcomings when it comes to trailrunning. My Dak would never make it the places I can get my '74 FJ40. Dakotas were never intended to be used the way most import trucks/jeeps were originally designed for. I haven't seen the Paris-Dakar rally in some time, but I bet there still isn't a Dakota running it. LOL

for a toyota i have just invested too much time
into mine, but i wouldnt bad mouth a toy
either... those tin cans can pack a punch on
the trail... but i believe like TowMan my dak
wasnt made to go the places the toy is and
can... they build em' for a purpose and they do
just that. but just to get my two bits out... if i
was to buy another truck in the next few years
it would either be an early 90's toy or another
dakota! none of that new shet. have u seen
the new 4runner??? wtf? its soo damn ugly...
and the tundra too!!! fork that wilderbeast!
i think i would rather have a 2000 ram with a

I see dakotas out on the dunes sometimes. Thats where I wheel primarily. For nasty trails though I have a TJ. The dakota is a great truck. I just got mine! Anyway it works great for the kids, gets around well in the sand, quad fits perfect in it! I looked at yotas, have always been impressed by them on the trail (espically for IFS) but they sit so high it's a pain unloading and loading stuff. Plus after all is said and done they are IFS anyway. If your looking for a major trail rig SFA's are the way to go. At least until one of the big car companies looks at some of the new IFS and IRS rigs that are showing up in rock crawling events.

I too own a toy and follwed a link here. My two cents. If it has four driven wheels and can carry a 2-4 of beer and a 60 pounder, it's a good truck.

Frame Composition

As the son of a fleet manager for a company that buys trucks here and there I've received plenty of factual stories regarding the tests of these trucks.

One test was frame durability; essentially the test was applying tons of pressure to the frame of each truck. The dakotas and fords lasted the longest, the toyotas and stuff crunched like sheet metal; the chevy did in between.

Anyway,a s for offroading, my friend and I made off roading on a lil private trail our fun for a week, couple hours each day. I did get stuck once as I only have 2 wheel drive, but his 4 wheel drive towed me right out. One advantage of the toyota is its standard lift - to make it look tougher. I just say blah, I got more size, I'm happy with my dakota.

I am technician at a Chevy dealership. I inspect
and repair all trade-in vehicles. Having this job I see all aspects of practically every car and truck out there. I can personally tell you that only a total of three Toyotas have been taken on trade for a Chevy product. One was an 88
regulay cab p/u with 234,500 miles, one was a 91
Paseo with 178,000, and the last was a 85 2wd p/u
190,00. Of the Toyota vehicles we have sold here none has returned for a repair. More often than not Dodges come back with coolant leaks from the intake or water neck, or check engine lights.
Dodges also have poor quality brake sysytems. Most dodges only get about 40k out of the front brake pads. And at this point if you haven't serviced your rear disc brakes they will be shot too. I have done front and rear brakes on numerous dodges with as low as 20k. Toyotas on the other hand will typically go to at least 70k before pads are worn. Rear brakes are a item that will indefinetly last as long as the truck is on the road. I have never done brakes on a Toyota truck. Also a glaring shortcomming in dodges is the lack of insulating materials and rattle proofing. When I drive a Dodge I feel as though all the interior panels are about to fly off and hit me. Toyota probably has a whole team of engineers just to manufacture and design insulation and rattle proofing features. Where Dodge obviously does not.
As for off road performance. I think this is a no brainer. Toyotas are obviously more competent off road machines than dodges. I have a 1998 4Runner it has a V6 and a selectable rear locker. I was running 265/70r16 dueller at's
bone stock and had no problem running a Local Trail called Eagle Rock the trail is a semi hard
mountianous trail that is gaining altitude constantly. It was conservitively rated a 7.
I was told by many people that a truck of it's "short" stature would succomb to the trail.
Another person told me they had to follow just so they could see the "carnage" but to their dismay I walked up every obstacle with ease.
Now that i have done the obligatory suspension lift and custom fabbed 2" body lift. The truck now runs 305/70r16 MT/Rs and is more capable than ever. I have seen one dodge wheelin in my area. It was a 99 Durango this guy hit a water crossing at 20mph and blew out his inner fenders and fouled his pcm leaving him with a dead truck. At least Toyota Engineers saw this modules inherent weakness and positioned it in side the vehicle.
So in my opinion Toyota is better in every
aspect except roominess and towing capacity. So if I needed to tow I would just buy a tundra. An as far as roominess goes what could be more roomy than a mid 90's FJ80? And with this you get front and rear electric lockers. What more could you ask for? Toyota's supierority is legendary and world renouned. where dodge's are world renouned as maintenence and logevity nitemares.

so in closing I will say this: It doesn't matter
what I think is better it just matters what you think is better. (But everyone knows nothing will beat a Yota on the trail. It is pretty much considered a fact were i come from. i don't see how this obvious truth has evaded all you people. Didn't you research the vehicle you were buying? Apearently not cuz you all ended up with sorry crap that can't hold up under normal conditions much less harsh off road conditions that Toyota's are all to accustomed to.)

First and foremost, lets compare specific vehicles. I don't care about a toyota paseo or tercell nor do I care about an old plymouth valiant or something.

David, I tend to disagree on a couple of your points. I can't vouch for everyone else on the brakes but I drive my truck hard it weights more than most other dakotas dream of. 5700# At high speed with a load there is some brake fade but I still get my 40K out of a set of pads. Insulating and rattle proofing, are you crazy? Toyotas are like tin cans, I'm afraid to close the door too hard in fear of the window falling out. I find the insulation and quiet ride of a dakota to be fantastic. Granted with headers and straight pipes and an aggressive tire mine can only be so quiet. I've gone a lot of places people didn't think a dakota would go, some of which I did in 2wd just cause I can. A reason I would say you don't see to many dakotas on the hard trails is this:
85' toyota pickup $1000
98' dakota pickup $10,000

Now which would you rather be bouncing off rocks and ripping drive shafts out of?

P.S no flame war intended just my opinions

I have a 79 powerwagon 360 police interceptor which dominated a local pulling circuit for 3 years. I have an 89 3.9 dakota with 243 thousand miles on it i have a 92 dakota sport with a 3.9 magnum and i walked away from a toyota 4 runner and a 93(?) land cruiser and a land rover at a local trail which i would give an 6-7 if ten is hardest. I have a 96 dakota 3.9 and i spent all winter pulling ford chevys yotas and nissans out of ditches in the hard pa winter last year.

All my friends drive rams between 89 and 03 some with no lift to 5 inch suspenion with 38's and i have never seen a yota keep up on our trails and many have tried

only one of my frineds drives one of those mid 80s yota st*t boxes and he has lost atleast a thousand to me on stupid bets. I walked away from him with my 89 two wheel peel on the street and my 92 took him up the mountain because he started to spin and i hooked a chain on and gave him a tug
I pulled his truck out of the ditch in the snow at least 20 times and just last week he was still braggin about that little coffee can riceburning slant eyed crap and said he would could out pull any off my dodges and wanted a shot at the power wagon and its funny when you wrap a chain around a rear pupkin on a power wagon and one around a yota how fast it comes out from under the yota

Dakota is too wide for most serious mountain trails. My Dak would never make it to the hiking trailheads up here in the northern Cascades. It's great for towing with the V8, and that's what I use it for. It was designed as a street truck. I take my old landcruiser to the hills. They each serve their purpose well.
