Wish I was as lucky...

300 miles - Ooops! Factory didn't even bolt the left engine mount to the block.

1,500 miles - Clanking from rear when shifting. Sounds like the "drive-line" snap.

30,000 miles - Limited slip differential starts chattering. Changed fluid and cleaned out clutch disc residue from bottom of differential case.

50,000 miles - 5-speed transmission input shaft bearing/seal and 3rd and 5th gears fail. The fluid was replaced with Chrysler spec'd fluid at 30,000. We're talking a manual transmission, and no towing/racing done with the truck!

65,000 miles - Cranks and cranks then finally starts. Dealer flashes the PCM for a TSB and charges me $137.00 and it fixes nothing. Battery is failing. Most likely cause, maybe the fuel pump is failing.

I don't even want to say "What next?"

1988 dak w/ 3.9 - 364,000 miles and it finally got scrapped. We put some headers on it around 240k and then a new carb @ 264k, and a new rear pinion seal around 200k. That was it. That truck took a lickin over the years. It finally died (we never got it fixed) and was scrapped about a year ago.

You guys are all pikers, my 93 4by 4 3.9 5 speed had 405,000 miles before we had to do anything except a radiator and a transfer case. But after we changed motors to a newer one all the stuff started going south. Have 500,000 miles on now and still runs with the original injectors and rear ends.

97 V6 5spd SLT just turned 140,000
*Transmission went at 36K (but could have been mistreatment by previous owner. I got mine used at 30K)I did get Chrysler to pick up that tab with only minor arm twisting.
*Exhaust/catalytic converter replaced at 130K
*Just lost heat 2wks ago (Brrr!) flushed the radiator/heater core....still only cold air. replacing thermostat next.

Otherwise...oil, brakes and tires....normal maint.
Its running a little rough sounding lately, but all in all great truck.....and believe me I drive the heck out of it!

I have a 99 rc 2 wheel drive, 3.9, manual trans, with 150,000. Never touched engine, clutch, radiator. At 120,000 relaced bearing in rear end, at 55,000 relaced steering rack due to leakage. I use the truck for work and most days it leaves home with over 1000 lbs on it, some days as much as 2500 (I have extra leaf springs on the back) I am very happy with this truck.

you must be telling a story, there is no way a transmission can go out at 40,000 miles unless you did something to make it happen. By the way, toyotas are pieces of crap, for what you get, you spend too much darn money on one, also, when one of those breaks, the price on parts is also very high becuase it is an import.

'97 318 CC SLT 4x4. 143K

Ball joints, idler and Pittman arms, shocks and 9 alignments in 4 years. Had a little cold weather hesistation in the tranny last year, fluid change and BG ATC seemed to fix (or postpone) trouble.

Otherwise, solid as a rock right now. 3k oil changes, 6mo K&N air filter service and 3mo injector service.

Looking at an '04 - it'd be easier to justify if my '97 was giving me problems, but it isn't.

My 93 had about 170k on it when I traded it in. I had a radiator at 39k, an exhaust manifold bolt at about 100k, and Ujoints right before the deadly trade in. Of course, tune ups, brakes, tires, the usual lot, but NOTHING stupid. God, I miss it. They sure don't make 'em like they used to.

If you're doing well with the one you've got, though, I'd make a few repairs and keep it. You sure don't want a new one.

Hey what does everyone suggest for an engine with 177,000 miles with some burning oil? I go through maybe a quart in 3000 miles. Is this considered normal for something with this many miles? I am planning on doing a completer rebuild, with headers and other performance parts, just don't want to fix somthing that ain't broke yet.

I have just transfered my gen 1 88 dak to my 16 yr old son. It has 189900 miles on it with only the rad, water pump and four sets of universals and a couple of exhaust systems changed. The 3.9 leaks a little but just passed MD smog and doesn't use oil. The other funny thing is that it only needed brakes to get through MD transfer inspection. I've changed the brakes on it maybe 3 or 4 times in 15 years and the original ball joints were still good enough to pass.

My 01 dak has already gone through a set of shoes and 1 ball joint with only 22k on it. Don't think it is going to be the truck the old one is.

Hey Chris, a quart in 3000 miles is good, not abnormal for those miles. My 95 3.9 has 220 thousand on it and here's the problems.
Front 4x4 driveshaft bearing at 50,000-warranty
fuel pump 60,000-warranty
water pump at 200,000- $100 and I put it on
rear brakes at 45,000 - $75
2 steering hoses - $70 - I put them on
oxy sensor at 210,000- $65- I put it in
parts total after 220,00 miles if I can add-$355
It has the original clutch, pp, and throw out.
Last month it still passed Alaska state emissions test. I've only put one set of brakes on it in 220,000 miles.
This is a good truck that keeps going. Oh, I forgot 2 sets of spark plugs at about $20. It burns 1 quart of oil between changes.

Did you have your truck since new? Seems like you really take proper maintenance on your truck. anyways, the only thing i had to replace was a radiator and water pump. the wierd thing about the water pump was that it didn't start leaking water like most do when they go bad. One day i was driving and all of a sudden the temp guage goes way high. so i pull over and notice that the v belt is caught between the fan blades. didn't make any sense at first.
