Just curious as to who has the highest mileage Dak that still has original drivetrain?! Our '97 CC 3.9 Auto 4x4 is just shy of turning 110,000 miles. I know it's not a ton of miles, but, we're impressed by how GREAT it still runs & drives!

Dakota v6 97 model that looks and runs like a showroom truck pulled off the lot the first day with only 55,000 miles.

Couldn't ask for anything more.

My '91 5.2 has 121000 miles and running strong. Burns a little oil, haven't figured out why yet. I've posted questions in regards to the intake as from what I've read this seems to be a common problem on the V8's but no replies. I brought it to an engine specialist who said that the way it runs I shouldn't worry about it. When I asked him what I could do about the smoke he told me not to look in the rearview mirror when I stomp on it,LOL.

Steph,

If your not seeing compression loss, I'd be checking the valve seals! :0)

No compression loss. That's what i'm thinking too(valve seals). Or the intake gaskets. Can't really afford to have my heads rebuilt right now though, probably quite expensive I imagine.

Steph,

Nah, not too bad if you do the majority of the labor yourself. Pull the heads, clean them, take them to the machine shop, bring them back and put them on. When I did my 305 Chevy I think it ended up being $125 for the valve jobs (all exhaust valves replaced! Ugh) and then $25 for the new gasket, then another $20 to replace the shot pushrods. My fault on the pushrods.

Cool Todd, that's actually pretty cheap. There's an auto specialities shop where I am and their shop rate is very reasonnable. I'm gonna get an estimate from them for just rebuilding the heads, I will R&R them myself. They can also shave them as they have a surface grinder(I know I used to work for them back in highschool). My only fear is that I do this and it turns out to be something else like a stuck oil control ring. If it is the intake gaskets sucking the oil into the engine I'm not worried about it as I will be tearing out the intake to get the heads off. This won't be 'till summer but at least I have somewhere to start. Hardest part'll be convincing the wife to let me use her car while my Dak's in repair,LOL.
Thanks for the info Todd, much appreciated.
Peace, Steph.

Re: the guy with the high oil consumption... there is a well known problem with the 318 of failures of the intake manifold plenum gasket that can allow oil to pass into the intake track. Symptom is progessively higher oil consumption and reduced mileage. Fix is relatively simple, just replace the intake manifold gasket.
