 Subject: '04 4.7 vs. HEMI??

was it just false information or is this correct...say two '04 Ram 1500's bone stock identical to each other except one has the HEMI and one has the 4.7 raced each other in the 1/4 mile. What would be the outcome?
i heard the 4.7 is no slower than the HEMI?? just the HEMI has a sh!tload more torque...
please fill me in

Greater torque = faster acceleration. I can't see how (with all other things being equal: weight, wheels/tires, gears, etc.) the 4.7L engine pushing the same load would be faster than the 5.7L.

well, not necessarily faster, just keep up
its strange becuase i saw a HEMI with exhaust and i have no idea what else keep up with a 2003 Mach 1 like the first 40 mph from a dig.

no way! my sister had one with the 4.7 and the hemi would stomp on the 4.7. why would people be buy hemis and rarely buy 4.7 if they where the same speed.

Well, lets put it in perspective... I am not saying the 4.7 is faster, as it shouldn't be. 5.7 is much greater than a 4.7 liter engine. BUT people put a lot of stock on that little label "HEMI". That is one reason that people would buy it. Same reason that no matter what the outcome, if you put a $250 K&N intake kit on your Dak, it WILL do better NO MATTER WHAT! There are 250 reason for it to perform better...
I drove a 1500 RAM 4 door 4x4 HEMI, and I was not impressed. It was quick but not what I expected. Forget the HEMI go for the cummins if going full size...

I drive an 02' Dak 4.7 4x4 Club Cab w/ 3.55 gears. Cams are my only real performance adder and I'm right there with my co-workers '04 QC Ram HEMI with 3.92's....
He thinks he can spank anything, but if we had the same gears, I'd whoop him.
Now, I realize we're talking a CC Dak to a QC Ram...but he's got 150% of the HP and nearly 150% the torque of my engine. Not to mention that ohh so sweet HEMI badge and the average 12mpg that comes with it.
One other thing...the throttle-by-wire on the HEMI is very annoying to me, even with an auto. Mash the pedal.......go. Must be really annoying with a stick cause the throttle response is just slow.

The drive by wire DOES delay the take off. The 2WD Hemi QC's only took me by a few tenths at the track. Didn't get to race a 4X4
A guy who works as a parts house I go to frequently had a 2WD Dak for a while. He has a Hemi Ram now. Brand new.
He says his Dak took off better from a dead stop. And he also says the hemi has that damn lag when he stomps it to pass people.
He says it has more power, but doesn't have the quick response like his 4.7 Dak had.
Drive by wire SUX! Dodge killed it a little when they went that route.
Now. I'm sure when you put a load behind it, the Hemi should still be better. Even with the bigger truck. That was it's purpose. power.

I just traded my '02 4.7L 5 Speed Dakota Club Cab 2x4 in and got an '04 HEMI Quad 2x4. Nice truck, comfortable, spacious and all that. The HEMI has good power and in bone stock form moved me down the 1/4 mile in 16.0689 seconds at 84.99 mph. The truck weighed in at 5,295 lbs with me in the seat and 7/8ths of a tank of gas. Pretty respectable for a large azz truck.
The Dakota had some things done and ran a best of 14.51 @ 96 mph. Not bad, but weighed in at 4,000 lbs even with me and 1/2 of a tank of gas. I had HO Cams, 70mm F&B, Intense Performance Z-Tube CAI, KenneBell Opt II, JBA Headers, M/T ETs 28"x11.5"-16s, True Duals and other cool additions to achieve this. Add the diffeence in weight to the bed of the dak with all these mods, and it would run around 16 flat.
In conclusion:
No a 4.7L Ram equiped the same as a HEMI would have his azz handed to him on a very large platter. The mere difference of 110 crank horses will make this a no brainer period.

That piss me off that they put that drive by wire bs on the hemis. The Chevy has that so the dodge copies it and its a stupid design. Those hemis are only semi hemis any way. if they where true hemi heads the trucks wouldn't pass smog and they would get sh!t for mpg. I was reading the review on Motor Trend that put the Silverado SS vs. the Hemi Ram rc.
The Silverado made better runs though the 1/4 and to 60. the SS ran 60 in 6.6 and the Ram 6.8. The Ram out handled the Silverado SS Awd. 1/4 times where 14.99 for the SS and 15.11 for the Ram.

Sorry, but we have a set of the HEMI heads on the floor at the shop sitting right next to a pair of 426 HEMI heads and I have looked at them 100 times, and yes they are true HEMI heads. Don't read Motor Trend, you will go blind from the adlib they do for their sponsors.
And even if the Chevy was a full second quicker, my choice would still be a Dodge. Personal Preference.

All take your word over Motor Trends and 2 more question are there two spark plugs pure each cylinder on the 5.7? My uncle was telling me the 426-hemi blocks aren’t that great true or not?

Yes, the 5.7L has 2 plugs per cylinder. And a well built 440 is better than an Old School Hemi, but a well built HEMI is what takes the Top Fuel guys to the winners circle with only 496ci displacement. (True enough the blocks and heads are built by MERLIN and DART and such, but the heads are PURE HEMI.)

if dodge would put the 5.7 in the dakotas they wouldn't be able to keep those things on the lot. they should have made a SRT-8 dakota with the 6.1 liter instand of the SRT-10 Ram.

it didn't spin a bit off the line. I have these stock 20s and the VHT was in very good shape that night so it just launched.See time slip at the bottom.

I have a customer that bought an 05' 4.7L Dakota for the simple purpose of putting the 6.1L HEMI in it. It has 800 miles on it right now today and is sitting at http://www.hotrodlane.cc in Arkansas awaiting this 6.1L HEMI to be put in it.
