They comfirmed they are going to recall!!

DaimlerChrysler is recalling 600,000 Dodge Durango and Dakota trucks because a defect can cause their wheels to fall off. The company says it will replace on the vehicles front suspension upper ball joints that may be subject to progressive wear. The recall includes 600,000 2000-2003 MY Dodge Durango 4x4 SUVs and Dodge Dakota pickups. An additional 400,000 4x2 SUVs and pickups in the same model years will be covered with extended 10-year/100,000-mile warranties

DC going to be paying out some cash!! The news here in michigan said ~$700 a truck!! Damn $420,000,000 for the recall!! But hey Do it right the first time!!!

What about the 2004 Dakotas??

Are they a different upper ball joint?

I have a 2004 and it would suck if my truck wasn't in the recall and had the same equipment.

I have a 98 that I've already replaced the ball joints on this summer - only 72,000 miles. These are the same ball joints as on the vehicles being recalled -- any word on if they will include 97 through 2003?

What are they going to do for those of us that already changed out our upper ones? I saved the ones I took out (sloppy ones) and the receipt for the replacement ones. Are they going to pay for my labor at there going rate? and the alignment I had to get?, and the very messed up front tires?

Just some questions I have:

Yeah what about the other years. I have reason to believe that my front left is going out. I have a 99 and was sad to hear that I missed out by one year

Don't think Daimler won't beat the maker of the original joints to death for the money to pay for this. Won't cost them that much especially since deals are always going on with car makers and the goverment. Bet Daimler gets to write this crap off as a loss.. then they really make out.

A good mechanic should be able to swap them out in an hour once he's done a few in a row. The ball joints couldn't cost much at THEIR cost.
$700 would be HIGH!

The extended warranty covers the front suspension only.

I would say that no one actually knows what any of the details are on the recall. Unless it's included in the announcement, then it's nothing but opinions.

That being said, my opinion on reading the announcement is:

1) Recalled vehicles will get a new set of uppers just by showing up.
2) Extended warranty vehicles will have the uppers (just the uppers...) warranteed for the 10/100K period. This means (to me) that they will only replace the uppers if they deem then to be bad. ...no free upper pass, must be proven bad first...

I was at my local Dodge dealer this morning for a Caravan issue (I also have a 02 Daktota 4x4). I asked the service writer about the recall. He told me that I should be receiving a notice in the mail within the next three weeks letting me know if my truck is affected. He also said they don't current have the parts for it. That made me curious because there was another guy in the waiting room getting ball joints put on his 02 Dakota. I guess they have parts when the consumer is paying rather than when DC is paying. The other thing that worried me is maybe they don't have the parts because their buying some other sub-standard replacement.
I just saw this on MSNBC "In addition, the company is recalling nearly 72-thousand Durangos in the 2004 model year. The government says a cable can short-circuit and cause a fire under the hood."

I have 97,xxx miles on 2000 2x4 QC. What should I do?

I would understand the 10/100,000 to mean that they have to be bad, but they may be. How do I get action now or get something to extend this warantee for me until parts are available or a dealer can look at it?

Can I take it to a local garage (not Dodge) up the road and have them inspected for a small fee, and document the mileage, then take it to Dodge?

What if Dodge dealer #1 lies until the warantee is up (for me less than 1 month until I reach 100,000) and then dealer #2 says they are bad but too late?

To me this is more BS and the recall should also be on the 2x4.

Also why is there only guesses on this site and no facts?

I have seen the recall notification. Just showed up on DC technical website. The notice mentions notheg yet of the 10/100 warranty. The dealerships should be getting recall kits this week and next week. Some dealers, including ours, have the ball joints in stock, but NOT the recall kit.
The kit includes: 2 upper ball joints, 6 bolts, 6 nuts, 2 cotter pins and 2 castle nuts.

Yes, since I was bitching about no info and home sick anyway, I decided to get some info.

The recall has been sent to dealers last night or this morning (two different answers on that). Somebody here mentioned this. It is D47, I was told and is specific to 4x4s for the years mentioned and the uppers only. This is from DC recall hotline after waiting about 30 minutes on hold. Two dealers I called said they had no knowledge of this info even though it has been released to them. WATCH OUT, info is available but I think the lies are a flying.

The warantee info is available from the hotline to DC customer service. I was told two answers - One said that all registered owners will receive info in the mail about this extended warantee. Dealers will as well but it may be a week. Another said "In the near future" and that was the extent of his info. This is for the 2x4 for the covered years. I was told that no assigment # for this is available yet, but it probably will have some identifier # for the extended warantee issue. I was told it would probably be the uppers as well to follow along with the recall. I waited 30 minutes on hold for this answer.

Since I have 97,xxx I was advised to take it to the dealer for an inspection. I have been told that if inspected bad you do not pay, if inspected good you generally will pay (but really up to the dealer). I was quoted $24 for the inspection so I made it now. To me not worth the risk and it will then be documented at a Dodge dealer.

Hope this info may help others in a situation similar to mine.

Never experienced a recall before. I recently purchased a '00 Dakota Quad Cab, 4.7l V8, 4x4. I have 62k miles on it, and I LOVE THIS THING. I do not believe I have a current warantee. Can I go into my local dealership and expect an honest answer? Will the recall cover me? HELP?

jp, you definitely still need to watch your azz. Ensure that the dealer uses the actual documented procedure to measure the BJ tolerances, and documents it in the service record. If they are found bad make them keep the service record open until the warranty info is available and they can make repairs at their cost.

My dealer, prior to the recall, did not use the tolerance measurement method, but instead decided to depend on the tech's ability to do the wheel wiggle method and the "tech's years of experience".

Naturally, the wiggle method showed no problem, but since I was seeing some of the BJ warning signs and my 02 QC AWD was about to come out of warranty, I "discussed" it with the Service Mgr until he agreed that the wiggle method was not sufficient, and he agreed to replace the uppers.

BowHunter,

Keep an eye on yours and if and when they do need replacing, don't bother with getting the same ole crap from the dealership. Replace your with something that is maintainable.

I just bought replacements for mine but haven't put them on yet.

I have a 2000 Dakota and ordered:
Moog part #K7392
Moog part #K7393

Cost me $187.50 shipped to central Florida

I got this discount code in an email from RockAuto.com and thought you might be able to use it if you order from them.

Bowhunter - give the recall a little time to get rolling, then check with a dealer. You probably won't be contacted since you're not the original owner but should still be able to get free replacement under recall.
