I just got back from the dealer for other warranty issues (that's another story). Parts guy said he got a kit today and the ball joints look the same as the current ones (he couldn't confirm any part numbers, just looks). Still no grease zerks. He said uppers only and he didn't think an alignment would be necessary. But as everyone else has stated, details are still coming in.

The recall DOES include a toe adjustment for the front end.

FYI...in the near future, you will not see more lubrication fittings, you will continue to see fewer. It is an industry trend answering the public demand for fewer and less frequent maintenance requirements. Why do you think platinum plugs, sealed wheel bearings, fill-for-life transmission fluid and 5 yr engine coolant are becoming more common on new vehicles?

Just FYI,
Got a reply from daimler/chrysler and
said that only 4x4 durango/dak will be recalled
and 2wd will be extended to a 10yr/100k on upper
balljoints only, whether you currently have a
factory warranty or not.

*just thought I would let you guys know in
case still some confusion, god knows I was!*

I don't get it. I have to change my diff fluid every 12,000 miles and my trans fluid every 30,000 miles, but the ball joints are 'sealed for life' so as I can save the extra 14 seconds it takes to grease them twice a year? I truly believe the Dodge engineers need a good ol fashioned ass whoopin!

For some 2004 Dakotas, only the recall for the wiper module applies...#D22. This recall applies only to vehicles built from April 24, 2002 through September 15, 2003

I contacted daimler/chrysler as my 2wd needs upper ball joints NOW and they said this post is not so. There is no recall expected except for 4wd 2000 and newer Dakota/Durango and I would be contacted if that decision changed.

Hey Rich where are you getting your info from?
Just wanted to show you guys my proof so here it is: Read'em and weep!!!!!

Thank you for your email concerning the recently announced recall on
Dakota and Durango upper ball joints.

Chrysler Group has launched Recall D47, to recall approximately 600,000
Model Year 2000-early 2003 Dodge Durango 4x4 SUVs and Dodge Dakota 4X4
pickup trucks to replace front suspension upper ball joints that may be
subject to progressive wear.

In addition, to address potential customer concerns, the company has
extended the warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles on the suspension
upper ball joints on an additional 400,000 Model Year 2000-early 2003
Durango 4X2 SUVs and Dakota 4x2 vehicles.

Repairs will be made at no cost to owners. Owners of vehicles covered
by this action who have previously paid for the repair will be
reimbursed by Chrysler Group.

Chrysler Group's internal investigation has shown that the front
suspension upper ball joints on some vehicles may be subject to
corrosion and progressive wear. If this condition is ignored for an
extended period of time, it could lead to front end noise, tire wear,
and in extreme cases separation of the front suspension. There have
been no substantiated reports of injuries associated with this condition
on these vehicles.

Owners will be notified of the action by letter beginning later this
month. Owners can also visit the Dodge Web Site at www.dodge.com and
click on the "Contact Us" page in the lower right corner of the home
page. Once that page pulls up, click on the "I need Recall information"
link, insert the last "8" digits of your Vehicle Number and if your
vehicle is involved, you can pull up a copy of the Recall notification
letter.

Letters of notification of extended warranty coverage will be sent to
customers in the near future.

Need additional information on the recent ball joint recall whether if
just
4x4 dakotas or if all dakotas, including 2wd dakotas. Performed vin
check
on your website, nothing found at this point. Noticed that my truck has
a
torn ball joint boot on the driverside and now starting to get a
"popping"
noise. Do you know if the recall is a "go" and what production date and
which specific models are going to be effected?
thank you for your time,
dave...

Upon reading my email from daimler/chrysler again more carefully, I believe the problem with them not including my 2wd in the recall is that they are only going back to year 2000. Mine is a 1997. I assumed the 10 years you mentioned for 2wd would cover vehicles not 10 years old yet. It does not and they don't explain that at all.

Well, I took the Dakota in for a check engine light and had them go ahead and do the ball joints. Got it back, and just as previously mentioned, no Zerks. SO I guess I can see myself replacing these with moog in 2-3 years?? AFTER the warranty is expired??

Is that the average people are getting on ball joints ? I'd expect them to last longer - mine are still good after 4 years, and that's with lifted torsion bars and some plow duty.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
