Couple Questions-
First off they stoped doing emmisions testing in my area for vehicles that are within 5 years of the present date. Which makes me think OFF WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.

I have a 2000 dakota 4.7 5speed 4wd
1-What advantages are gained from removing your cat? im thinking horsepower, and MPG increse when your not stomping it.
2-And ive heard there are 3 cats on the 4.7?
3-If so which ones to remove?
4-Does this hurt the life of your engine by not creating enough back pressure for the motor?

Thanks to all who reply!

since yours is a 2000 you might have the 1 cat model like me. get a cat box so you don't get a check engine light. and gut or remove the sucker

I have a 2KDak with one cat on it, also my 2002 Dak has 1 cat on it. both 4.7 motors. You can get the cat box from speedtweaks.com If you are caught with out the cat on your vehicle penalty could be as high as 5 grand. Is it really worth the risk? In my eyes the gains from a removal is bleak.

I think CW might know the answer...I think there's another post somewhere around here with a similar question, and I think he said if you've got three cats, removing the 3rd one might be okay. But if you've only got one, I wouldn't do it.

I gotta agree with kevster on this. Ask yourself this: Is 5 hp (difference between 2000 federal and 2000 CA versions) worth the cost of doing the mod and the potential legal hassle? If so, do it. If not, then look at other options (cat back exhaust, larger throttle body, different intake, etc). My three cat 4.7 (2000 CA emissions version) responded nicely to the Gibson cat back, and the airaid works well during the winter...I run the stock filter box in the summer because the underhood heat makes it run really doggy with the the airaid.

Dan,
You stated that you could feel the power loss in the summer w/the Airaid. I live in FL and have the same setup and was wondering how much of a difference you can feel.
Thanks

You can put a performance cat in the place of the stock one. Or you could get rid of it. You need the cat box like everone says. You will feel a difference the 4.7 cat is farily restrictive. But it only mainly helps on the top end. Works better when you have a few mods like intake exhaust and throttle body.

Ported 68mm throttle body, IAT adjuster, 3" flowmaster cat back, TPS @ .76V, 4" cold air, Roadmaster active suspention, Removed Third cat. Electric fan Convertion, HO cams installed.

on my old cars I got 15hp at the wheels from an offroad down pipe, good bends instead of crushed bends and no cat. stock cats are extremely restrictive I don't care what anyone says. depending on were you live It's pretty hard to get a ticket.

I suspect this might not be very popular but I think the tradeoff between the small amount of performance you get from removing or gutting a catalytic converter is not worth the environmental impact. One of the reasons I feel comfortable driving a V-8 is the emissions are so much lower now. My '01 4.7 delivers outstanding performance, short of racing, and reasonable fuel economy if I pay attention. Boost performance if you want but don't eliminate considerations for clean operation. By the way I am a conservative Republican and not a liberal "no cost is too high for environmental protection" environmentalist. I believe in cost effective controls.

Yeah removing or gutting might be a bit extreme. I'd like to have a free-flowing cat though. They aren't that expensive compared to other mods and a few more ponies would be nice. Seems like most of the mods i'm wanting to make will hopefully get me better mpg. Got a 360airintakez and if I drive normally I get about 1.5 better. Thats a start. I just want to make the engine more efficient.

Handi2,

No hard numbers on summer airaid vs winter airaid vs summer stock vs winter stock...it just felt sluggish with the airaid last summer so I swapped in the stock airbox and filter and it perked right up. Once the weather cooled off I put the airaid back on and it felt stronger than the stock setup. I just figured that because of the summer heat, the airiad was getting a lot of hot underhood air and with the stock airbox there's less underhood air that's actually entering the engine.

Make sense?

I've got a 2002 dakota 4.7, and replaced the factory muffler with a universal 2-chamber flowmaster. It sounds healthy, but still pretty quiet, I want it opened up and sounding a lot louder than it really is, I want to remove the cat since I think thats the culprit of it still being quiet cause 2-chambers are pretty loud normally, and I don't care about the smog law...

my question is... will it hurt thr engine, as far as not enough backpressure, and secondly... will it give me a check engine light? thanks!!!

back pressure no check engine light yes.

you will need a cat box, o2 sim etc to fool the computer into thinking a cat is there. You can email me privately I can help you with the o2. I won't have access to email again for a couple of days though.

Wow i was reading all of that until I realized it was a fairly old post LOL!!!

Dustin, you will most likely get a code, since the SECOND O2 sensor is looking to check catylitic performance.

I used to live in a non emission area for YEARS until i moved down to the Phx area and honestly I never really could tell much on the butt dyno when removing a cat. But the sound is noticable.

My '03 4.7 had the one single cat. Now it's got two 2 1/2" cats so I can't say it is restricting much at all :P
But aside from the nice sound and true duals. I still can't feel anything in the butt dyno except maybe some top end. I probably need to do something about the intake (manifold) to benefit from the opened up exhaust.

I'd just go with either DUAL cats or a high performance one vs. cuting one out and then playing with the Cat simms. Unless it is a serious race truck then we're not talking about a daily driver anymore.

My .02

How many cats do you have? (converters I mean, I have my own pussys)

My 01 4.7, yadda, yadda, came with 3 cats. One large sucker after the Y pipe, with no sensors before or after it, only on the pre cats on the headers.

Mine was removed years ago. Still passes inspection as they only hook up to your puter, and check for codes. NO codes.

I looked in the end after it was cut off, and one end had a fine mesh screen across the entire pipe!

Did they tell you there's like an 80,000 mile warranty on the cats?

The is an 02 sensor before and after each cat on the headers. If it's not right, it will throw a light. Also, if it's not right, the Air/fuel mixture will be way off, causing it to use more fuel, etc.

What year, miles, etc is your Dak?

Drive it like its paid for!

Kevin, have you noticed a power steering fluid leak? or have you checked the p/s fluid level lately? there have been reports on here about the 4.7's power steering pressure switch leaking causing fluid to travel down the wiring harness to the O2 sensor plug and giving false bad O2 sensor fault codes.

BUT CAT STARTED MAKING NOISE ,REMOVED INSIDE OF CAT SOLVED NOISE BUT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND ABOUT 8 MPG.
SO I LOOKED FOR NEW CATS ON LINE FOR 2WD $355.00
but 4wd are $1100.00 just cant believe the difference
