Subject: 440 Magnum for Dakota??
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey there fellow gear heads! I've got a 1993 Dakota CC LE that I want to make into a nice (and VERY fast)street machine. I was wondering if any of you would know if a 383 or 440 would fit under the hood of the '93 Dakota?? I know these two engines are physically bigger in dimensions than the 318 or 360, but I'm really wondering if the bigger engines will fit the frame rails? Any KNOWLEDGBLE help would be much appreciated.

Currently I have a '93 with a 440 in it...it isn't running yet (got some suspension and driveline stuff to do yet. But the engine will fit. Go to engine-swap.com and they'll even sell you motor mounts for the 440...piece of cake

Give Schumaker Creative services (206)364-7151 a call. They sell conversion mounts that will allow you to put a B or even R/B into your Dakota. I believe they run about $385 for the kit. They also sell conversion kits to bolt in an A-727.

Muwhahahaha! Exelent! Where i live there's a whole but of guys who have slaped 350's in there s-10's. I only have the v6 mag. That gives me an idea...the first ever Dakota Sport 6-Pack 440 :)
But right now i have another project. I have a 1966 Dodge D-100 series half-ton pickup i'm working on Rest/Rodding. She's getting a well built 440...it'll shut those chevy guys up for awhile.

With the 440, would I need a new tranny to bolt it up properly, or anything else major? Also, what is the mileage decrease with the 440? This sounds really cool, and having experience with both Gen2 and Gen3, I know the Gen2 has more room in the engine-compartment. I'd like to look into this myself if I can get an idea of the plusses and minuses.

The big blocks use a different transmission bell house - won't bolt up to a small block tranny.

So I'd need a new tranny and the engine with computer. How about the transfer case (I have 4x4s) or anything else? I am REALLY excited about this kind of a mod because that is a helluva lot of power for a Dak! That and some chrome would make my truck complete. Well, I'd probably see if I could stroke it to a 460. My grandfather once had a Ford F250 full-size with a 460. Damn thing was nothing but power. I would love that kind of HP in my smaller truck :D!

I also just thought of something major to me. Will I have to remove the front drive-train to seat this much larger engine? If so, would bigger shocks and such (lift it about 3") help? I won't get rid of 4wd, but if I can get a 440 AND keep my 4wd system, that would be ownage!

You could get very good power and not be nose heavy or need a different tranny if you go with a 360 stroked to 408. 460 is not a size the 440 is usually stroked to and 440s can easily be built to make as much power as Ford's 460 (even a built 460) - I wouldn't get too caught up in matching Ford's cubes.

big blocks dont weigh that much. The 400 block weighs only about 60-70 lbs more than a 360. Replace some of the iron with aluminum and you got it set. And i believe the 440 weighs only about 100 lbs more than a 360.

just some ideas, going from an iron intake manifold to a single plane aluminum would drop about 30-40 lbs right off the bat. Replace the water pump and housing with aluminum and you lose another 15 lbs. Replace the heads with edies and you lose about another 60-70. Doesnt take much.

And with those heads, the right intake and cam, your power would be way out of the 408's league on a 440.

Hmmm...what about going with a manual for the 440? I was thinking a Jerico 5sp (considering horse power, below 500 horses, i'd go with a Richmond five speed). Also, is there a way to lighten the truck itself and still keep it streetable (by DOT saftey standards)? I know if you get alot of aluminum in the engine compartment thats some droppage, but what about other areas? Or is it better to just lighten up the engine compartment, so that you have more weight transfer to the back rear axel (and providing you have a good gripping rear axel) to get the best start off the line and continue your lead with the 440's raw power?

Stick with the lighter front. Glass hood. You need all you can get in the rear.

Well it's settled then. I may not stroke it to 460, but I will now be saving for a 440 and tranny. Also saving for lighter manifolds, and a nice big 14x3 open-element air-intake for it. May go true duals through series 70 Flowmasters with thsi bigger engine. I bet it'd sound AWESOME!

man, just get a 400 block and stick a 4" stroker crank in it. 472 ci of whoop ass that would send that 460 back to momma.

and you can go much bigger than that if you wanted to.
