Got your rig all together now, Intense ? I thought a complete 440 was a couple hundred pounds heavier than a complete small block - I know when I hung a 440 on my engine stand it squatted a bit. You're right about ways to lighten it, and sticking to the lighter and stonger 400 block is a good suggestion too.

Actually, you can mate a well-built A518 to a big block with a bellhousing adapter. It was designed for exactly this purpose. JVX/Memphis Performance is one place that sells them.

i got it together again and got her fired up again last night. I changed the cam in it and replaced my head gaskets. so much fun!

but for some reason, every time i put the darn thing together i manage to put the distributor in 180 out. Kinda fun to watch the big fireball shoot out of the carb. This cam doesnt have the lobe of the other one but it still makes a lot of noise.

I was chatting with my friend about the possibilty of a 440 in my 1992 dakota 4x4 LE. He said it wouldnt fit, and I said its worth looking into, and by cracky here it is sitting on the boards. My dakota has the original 3.9 magnum v6 with 160k miles and 5 speed manual transmission, stock suspension etc.

Its reaching the point where I need to do something with it, I just bought my wife a 2003 dodge intrepid so I have my chevy lumina I can drive if and when I start to do this project.

My question\concerns are in the tranny/transfercase department. It appears most folks are going with a automatic tranny instead of a manual. What options do I have to plug a 5 speed behind the 440 if I were to use the schumaker(spelling sorry) kit mentioned above.

Would the transfer case I have work, it needs rebuild Im sure. I also undestand I might have to have a new drive shaft made for the transfer case and tranny coversion, luckily my friend knows a local shop that makes custom shafts so I can talk to them.

also if there are any other gen2 dak 440 owners out there, any notes, tips, etc you have would be cool.

my friend has a 440 he pulled out of some old dodge tuna boat car sitting in his garage now, and seeing how there is a kit built to mount the engine in my trucks engine bay with out cutting or welding, its good fuel for the fire to try and pry his hands off the engine, mainly since he sold his challenger he was gonna put it in, its just sitting there. He also has the original transmission that came with it.

The sound of Dakota 440 4x4 has a nice ring to it.

thanks for any input you have, this is an exciting project to entertain.

the conversion isn't all that hard. at least i didn't find it to be. keep in mind the year of the 440, as this will be very important if you go to bore it or switch to another tranny. late model 440's are thin wall cast(lighter) you can not bore then over as far as an earler 440. also if the 440 you have is a late model and it came with a 727 TF, you will need the torque converter. if you do not use it, you will have a viberation you will never be able to get rid of. it is ballanced to that engine. in the long run though, it will fit (nicely too i might ad). as far as matching a 5 speed up to it, thats someone elses department. if you have any other questions, just shoot and good luck with the switch.

Thanks for the input the more the better, Im reading as much info as I can get my hands on. I joined the dak mailing list in hopes to garner info there to.

To Dak440 what year is your dakota?

Accessory questions: After you mounted the 440 in the engine bay how much space was there between the front of the block and the stock radiator position?

If you have a gen2 did you have to change the brake booster size or any clearance problems with steering column or steering box?

I have a 4x4 and all the equipment is on the drivers side of the engine bay(shaft, gear box, etc) do you think there would be clearance problems there?

thanks again for any and all response's.

it's a 91 dakota with a 77 440 out of a motor home (high lift cam = torque). i made my own mounts so i could position the engine where i wanted it and they are close to the same thing that engine-swaps.com sells (trying to save some money because of college also). you will have to use an electric fan b/c clearance is not enough for the stock one. depending on the year of the engine also the water pump neck on early 440's comes out on the right(will need a new radiator b/c of this) and the later 440's water neck comes out on the left which is just righ for the stock radiator in your dak. as far as the brake booster, it will clear but good luck taking the valve cover off. it can be a little tricky if they are chrome (scratches). you will need hp manifolds for the 440 (very hard to find and expensive). i bought a set of headman block huggers and made them fit but its alot of trouble. as far as the engine bay, the only difference between your dak and mine is the front axle and suspension. i wouldn't think that would be a problem. but if so there is always a way around it. it's just a matter of relocating or adjusting. good luck with the build.

For those worried about clearance with your brake booster a 400 has a lower deck highth than a 383 or 440 and can easily be stroked to a 462. makes it so you can still remove your valve cover, with a rag over it you can even do it scratch free

either go with apainless wiring kit or just keep the old harness us the same wires goin to the starter and power to distributor rest are obsolete, but harness has headlight and what not in it so just wire loom all you need to hide

Will the old wires work? I was told I had to bypass the ASD in my old 91 to switch it to carb. I just assumed that tghe magnum would be the same. Guessing by your name you did the swap?
thanks
