Is it normal for a 2003 4.7 to have a slight rough idle. it almost feels like a miss .i thought new V8`s were supposed to idle smooth as silk, not like my ex- 96 jeep cherokee 4.0.

I have a 00 4.7 and mine did the same thing when I bought it. After a few thousand miles I thought I had a fouled plug so I changed them all to autolites but it still does it. I eventually got a Leach PCM flash and noticed the rough idle was still there. Its just the nature of the beast man.

I hear ya.
My idle has been rough through 2 early spark plug changes, and adding a jet chip, and a 180 thermostat. What's worse is whe the idle runs up to a grand ramdomly after stopping at a light. I have to be ready on the brakes to keep from rear-ending people!
The transfer case doesn't work in 4 high and almost got me killed crossing the Sierras. I've had to change the front rotors after driving 5000 miles. After adding "gadgets" I increased the gas mileage to a mere 13.2 in town. The passenger door lock grinds everytime it automatically locks above 15mph. That really freaks people out when they don't expect it.
There are many more peeves I could go on about but you get the picture.
I love the way the truck looks and drives when it happens to run right. Dodge didn't nail the details though. The 4.7 need full pedal to get any action, and that seriously screws the mileage. I'm never buying a small V8 again. Or any small truck in general.
If anybody with blind love for a 4X4 2000 4.7 CC email me at mpp59@hotmail.com because I'm selling soon.
This is my last post here because I tried to be a Dodge guy and it just wasn't worth it.
I sincerely wish the best of luck to anybody who reads this. I hope yours turns out like I wanted mine to.
Take care...

Mine's nice and smooth too Todd, so I guess its not the tranny. Salinas' idle run up might be the IAC (dirty ?). I wonder if the rough idle guys are running a higher octane fuel than they need so its harder to ignite ? I've had smooth idle on original pcm, after AG factory flash, and still smooth with a boneyard AF flashed unit I got to run the truck so I can get a performance flash without downtime.

I've got an '02 Quad Cab with the 4.7L and automatic transmission. The rough idle's got me stumped too. When I got the truck it idled perfectly smooth at 650 rpm all the time. At about 6,000 miles, it began to intermittently idle very rough at 400-500 rpm when in drive. So far, I've had the PCM updated at the dealership, cleaned the IAT, changed the plugs, & cleaned the throttle body. All to no avail. Still idles like my neighbor's '84 Tercel that's never had an oil change. I've noticed that if I put the truck in neutral then back in drive it idles fine. Also, when I turn on the AC to bump the idle up to 700 rpm, then turn the AC off, the idle is smooth at 650 rpm .... until I drive and come to a stop again ... back to the droning, rumbling, stumbling 400 rpm idle. The truck runs great otherwise ... 15 mpg city / 20 mpg on the freeway. Can't complain there. Oh well -- guess I'll just have to live with the bum idle. Just kind of embarassing to have a $30,000 truck that idles like an '84 Tercel. Ugh. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

There is a TSB on the rough idle. The dealer flashes the EPROM with some programming and smooths the idle.

I made a few phone calls to dealerships this morning, and each one the dealerships refers to a TSB for rough cold starts. Each of them said they have not dealt with any trucks with my symptoms that was fixed by a PCM flash. Can anyone out there that has had a PCM flash that fixed this problem, please post a part number or TSB number that I can reference to a dealership to see if I can get to the bottom of this. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

What about a new battery? If the truck is idling well at 650 rpm, I can duplicate the rough idle at 400-500 rpm condition by rolling the electric window all the way up and holding the switch up, so as to put that extra load on the electrical system. This makes the truck idle exactly as it intermittenly does at the 400-500 rpm range. This is a long shot, but, at worst, I can just take the battery back. Anyone got any good suggestions for a battery? (And, yes, I'll do a search too, if nobody wants to offer up any current advice for battery purchases). Thanks in advance.

Bought 03 V8 Manual CC in Feb. and it idles like my
fuking 89 Pontiac Firebird. Yes, very embarrasing. Took
off IAC motor ...little or no carbon buildup. The truck
started doing it the moment I left the dealership.

I think its a vacuum problem. I had an error code the
other day for the evap canister. Dodge is telling me I
didn't have the gas cap on tight enough and that was
the source of my problems. Researched this a while
ago and found in a forum that a Dodge mechanic said
that the vacuum for the evap canister would be
triggered when you were just idling and not hitting the
gas. Only thing we have to do is trick the computer into
thinking were always hitting the gas or just change the
firmware in the computer.

I got the PCM flash on my '02 QC 4.7 and it helped somewhat. It still idles rough when compared to just about every car I've been in :( but it's smoother than before the flash. if you turn the A/C on and RPMs climb to 600 everything is fine, I can't figure out why Dodge just can't boost the idle up from 400 with the software and be done with it.

Part # on the sticker the dealer put on is 56029351AC

Hope that helps. My started doing it @ 1,300 miles :( The rough idle and mileage on this engine are my only real complains... well the seats could be more comfortable too :P but that's it. Atleast the engine is powerful all the way up the tach :)

For anyone whose rough idle is related to low idle, here's my hack backyard mechanic bandaid fix. Just turn your idle up mechanically. Looks like you need a special tool (torx with an indent) but you can move the idle throttle stop screw by grabbing the threads from the backside with a pair of needle nose and twisting. TB gasket is reusable if easier with TB off. My idle is 700 rpm by the dash tach; I had to do this recently when swapping in a ported 68 mm TB from a manual truck (I think they idle lower with less transmission drag) I know this doesn't address why some of you with smooth idles lost it, doesn't say much for the dealers if they couldn't tell why. BTW, your old TB is running great Chris, thanks for the great deal !

Will this really work? I thought the PCM would just lean out the system to bring the idle back to its set point (in this case, a lousy 400 rpm). Will mechanically adjusting the idle really work here?

Got an '00 4.7 4X4 with almost 60K and my idle has been rough for quite a while too. Found out the injector on cyl 8 went bad. According to the dealer, it didn't throw any warnings at first either. Dealer ran diags on it and pulled trouble codes for the cat and o2 sensors and replaced them. That helped for about 15 miles. Brought it back and they found the bad injector. Love computers...

Love the truck, though. Good size, good power. The idle has been my only complaint. If it still idles rough when I get it back I'll give Kowalski's rec a shot.

Just a thought! I was having a problem with ruff idling and fixed my problem. I have a 97' 5.2, Club Cab and all I did was replace the Distributor, Rotor, Wires, Plugs, and ignition coil. Now it's idling as smooth as silk!! To tell you the truth... "Don't screw with the PCM" Just try the simple things first.... You'll be saving a lot of time and money...

Food for thought!

Have a good one!

Does it idle too high at times? Mine is at 700rpm most of the time and then the occasional 500 where I feel the studder. If I adjust it I'm afraid it'll have too high an idle. Pisses me off to have to do anything, that's why I bought new
