Distributer is not the problem on a brand new vehicle. I
think the truck has poor vacuum and can't suck the
fumes out of the evap canister very well causing the
computer to run the engine lean while the truck is at a
stop.

Anybody know of good ways to increase the vacuum ?
Maybe K&N air filter? Performance exhuast?

I have a 95 V8 CC 4x4. When warm, it idles as low as 400rpm, never rough though. It did get rough when I first bought it though. Had cheap-arse Champions in it. Replaced them with Bosch's and fixed the problem. When I added the K&N air filter, it idled even smoother. Now I have trouble knowing if the dang engine has cut-off on me at times. Thank God for the tach!

I recomend dumping ANY Champion or Autolite plugs (they aren't worth a crap in a vehicle, but are OK for ATVs) and getting Bosch or something. You'll notice a smoother idle and better gas mileage.

Also, you could try unplugging your battery for 5min to reset the computer. Maybe when it re-adjusts to your driving style, it'll be cake.

Finally, check for any air or fuel obstructions. A dirty air or fuel filter can cause problems. Adding fuel additives regularly also tends to cause problems in the long-run, which is why most say only to use them once a month. Red-Line is the only exception I know, and it did improve my mileage when I used it once.

dragtop - sounds like you have an eratic idle - different problem. My fix is for rough idle due to low idle setting. My idle doesnt vary. Good luck - not sure what will fix yours.

I fixed mine for now. I have replaced near everything. Some things just to put new on my 93V8DD. I was having the code 27 problem (injectors) I finally set the timing. The time and idle are controlled by the computor, but the distributor, damper and #one cylinder must be lined up together. #one Cylinder must be on its compression stroke (duh) but not at its peak. The rotor on the distributor must be pointing at the (Switch plate Alignment mark) See the Haynes Book. The Damper mark must be at TDC or "0". The point to all this is the computor can not compensate for timing out greater than 5 degrees. These things must be right. The Haynes Fuel Injector book says this must be straight or the timing offset shows up as rough idle and or injector problems (Code 27). My DD is running better than the day I got it. What do you have to loose. email me at dibberdott@zoominternet.net

What you have is a bad vaccum. Change your air filter to a K&N. Seal the edges with a lube you can get at auto zone. Replace the top. Unplug your battery for 10 minutes. Presto you are in business. If this doesnt work then get Platinum Spark Plugs and a new distributor cap. New wires also if you have the money. This will fix it. If it doesn't hen your PCM is getting voltage from somewhere else like the horn or airbag sysyem and then an electrical mechanc has to trace it and fix it. That should only cost $150. Anymore and you are getting ripped off. Scott the Mechanic.

I guess I ought to feel better my 2000 4.7 V8 Dakota did not start rough idling, missing, until 93K+ mileage. I'm experiencing it right now, it's been over a week. It sucks, I paid $300 to a Dodge Service center for nothing. Well they checked plugs, wires, fuel injector and cleaned combustion chamber. But those did not help. They recommended further check (removal of cylinder for inspection) at an additional cost of $900. I'll just look into getting a new car. I have had very few problems with this truck driving it over 4 years. Loved the truck, but probably won't buy another Chrysler vehicle. Will have to try my luck on somethin else.

I've had a 1997 dodge dakota 4X4 with 3.9 l since new. It now has 240000 klics on it and must admit, it has been reliable.
Just now i'm having trouble figuring why the engine will stop after starting fine (won't idle). It started doing this after a short drive, for a short stop in very cold weather. Now it's gotten worse. It does it regardless of exterior temp. I had similar trouble last time the battery went bad, but this time the battery is fine. Help !
