Subject: 5.2L Oil Loss
IP: Logged

Message:
I am having a problem with oil consumption/loss in my 99 Dak. I recently drove from Florida to Vermont and back and went through 10 quarts of oil. There is no smoke from the pipes, no leaks, and the thing spark knocks like a _____ (insert own word). I brought it to the dealership and all they can do for now is "An Oil Consumption Test" and make me drive it, even when the oil is low. Does anyone have any info? The intake plennum gasket and all other gaskets are fine.

When I had my Jeep Comanche, the pcv hose started sucking oil(design flaw in the 4.0L). The engine knocked and pinged like crazy. I would say it's pumping out the exhaust by trying to burn it. Have a friend drive behind you while you drive it. Cruise it, stomp it, and back off and have your friend tell you when it blows blue smoke.
The plenum gasket is known to go in them. Take a flash light and look down the tb bore.
Good Luck.

I'd check that plenum gasket again, it could be leaking toward one of the cornes and getting sucked in immediately and won't puddle up under the TB. Pull all your spark plugs and check for oil consumption.
Be sure to check all around your engine bay top and bottom for leaks.

I had a 99 dak 5.2 v8 that was an oil guzzler. The shop had me do a consumption test. They had the heavy engine mechanic take it apart and he found an internal oil leak. Problem solved. Have your service guy look for that.

I don't know what they meant by internal oil leak. Could be a lot of things I guess.

'98 5.2L, 58,000 mi, bought last August at 53,500. Uses 1 qt about every 500 miles, occaisionally misfires and runs rough. Mechanic said cynlinder 8 is bad - probably the ring. Changing spark plug helps. Pretty disappointed. I figure if I have to have the damn engine torn apart, there's no point in putting it back together without improving something (heads, exhaust, etc.). It's driving OK now, just have to watch it.

I have a 98 5.2 and have a slight oil leak at the rear main, but its less than a quart between changes at 70k miles..it leaks less than my Harley so I don't even think about it.

my '95 318 was losing oil though the intake seals....apparently a little injested and a little leaking....it never puddled on the ground and never smoked..............the only way i knew about it was when underneath changing the oil, i saw oil sludge on the block.

oil loss, oil sludge, i have a 99 slt still under warranty and theyre not backing it. i have seen multiple postings on the web that this is a common problem. its been maintained religiously every 3 mos oil changes .. this is a 99 and i have only completed 22000 miles. the extended service company has denied my claim due to "improper maint" (ok, i have dates, times and all of all maint. completed since i got the truck, on time above and beyond.) HOWEVER read your ext. service contract... (not covered is blah blah blah theft loss, blah, act of god, blah blah blah) apparently anything can fall under this section so thats what they tell me is wrong, the oil condensation that caused the sludge is a "act of god" or what not covered herin in the text of the agreement. hmm.. im getting a lawyer.. dont mess with me, my truck, or my military life! :) thanks yall for listening.. :)

Thank you all for your suggestions. It turned out to be the Intake Plennum Gasket, which is what I told the dealership initially. Anyway, It turned out that when I had it replaced about a year and a half ago, the mechanic billed out the parts and the labor, but never touched a thing. There goes a bit of my confidence in "Your Friendly Dodge Dealerships."

I have a 97 Dakota SLT w/ the 318. At about 20K, I experienced the same problems but I only lost about 1 qt per 1000 miles. Same thing, no smoke some pinging.

After months of my Dealership (Shelor in C-burg, VA) guessing everything under the sun what it could be, I took it to Tri-City Dodge in Eden, NC. The Svc mgr there was extremely helpful and correctly diagnosed the problem as a bad plennum gasket.

Unfortunately it is just the nature of my beast to blow that gasket. Over the years I've had that gasket replaced 3 times and the intake itself was replaced once. It still gets sucked in, and I'm not an aggressive driver and rarely use my truck to haul heavy loads.

I understand there is now a new fix which involves a different style gasket but after all that, and at 130K I just add a qt of oil to it every 1000 miles and turn up the radio when it starts to ping. Still love my truck though.

The new gasket is metal. Try blowing that one out....

I THINK the problem with repeat plenum gaskets is the bolts are being overtorqued and crushing the gasket around the bolt holes. The thin design of the pan allows the force to concentrate in a small area.

JMM, you can turn up the radio and ignore the ping but, it can do some serious damage to your engine internals.
BTW, nice OLD thread you resurrected.

I'm not sure if the 5.2 uses intake valve stem seals or not but that's where I would start. Especially if the plenum gasket is good and installed properly. Compressionpressure looks good so there is no other place that I can think of. Looks like you'll have to have a talk with that machine shop after all.
