It's likely the intake manifold plenum gasket. A
very common problem on the 5.2.

There is a TSB, 09-05-00.

Put some thought into that, He said it's only
fouling 1 plug.

Could be a broken ring or bad valve guide seals.

Exactly!
Fouling just one plug didn't have me thinking plen.
gasket. I'm sure it's in need of changing but the
problems he describes is something else.

Start with a compression test (done properly)..
Take your coil wire off,
Grab a pen an paper

*Throttle has to be wide open*
(engine not running of course)

Test each cylinder, mark down results and cyl #
When you get to the trouble cyl. test it mark it
down.
Now go back and squirt some motor oil into the cyl
and retest. mark that result down

Post everything here
Me or Daddio can help you out.

PS, I'd still like to know the mileage on this
engine.....

It is possible that it is the intake plenum gasket and it is only fowling ONE plug. The same exact thing happened in my '96 v8. A very easy way to check it visually is to hold the throttle at WOT by hand (with the engine off, of course) and shine a flashlight down into the intake. If you see oil at the bottom, it is the intake plenum. If you do not see any sign of oil, then it may be one of the things that daddio mentioned.

Got a 2001 Ram, 25 K original miles, 7 oil
changes, the last oil one with Mobil
synthetic. As with ALL previous oil
changes from brand new, a check showed
the oil down 2 qts and yet oil pan, front
seal, rear main seal bone dry, no smoke,
engine passes state inspection with flying
colors. I was in the auto repair field for
30 years and never saw oil loss without
trace of exit somewhere. You folks got a
clue?

steve d check your plenum gasket, ive seen that alot, with the engine idling unhook the pcv valve and plug the valve and the hose with one hand and with the other hand plug the crankcase vent hose for about 5 seconds then see if the vent hose sucks or blows it should blow if it sucks the plenum gasket is blown

Jeep grand cherokee 98 5.2 l. I have the same problem with
cylinder #8. When I pull the plug out theres oil on the bottom
and the top of it. Im not sure if its the plenum gasket or
something worse. Im already having trouble trying to figure out
what it is. When I pulled the hoses on the pcv valve I covered
both sides then it seemed as if one side sucked and the other
didnt do much. I wasnt sure what side to checj so I checked
both the passenger side and the drivers side and got the same
results.
