Hello all,
I have a 2001 SLT Plus Club Cab black and silver two tone Dakota. 4.7L V-8 AUTOMATIC
All wheel Drive
3.55 rear axle ratio
Basically fully loaded minus leather.
I have raced two different R/T's and beat them both. I havn't added any kind of mods to my truck as of yet. I have also been reading in the other posts about a top speed of only 106-115mph, I have personally had mine up to 122 one day racing a little BMW. How did I do this? Also what is the big deal with 5 speed manual transmissions. My automatic is just fine for me. One thing that I would like to do however is add at least 100hp to my stock engine. What should I do to add the hp and not lose hardly any torque. I would like to say that money is no object but it is. I have around $6,000 to spend. I was looking at just saving my money to put towards a Ram SRT but as nice as a Viper engine with 500hp would be with a heavy truck. I would like to maybe get a new 5.7 340-360hp Hemi to drop into my truck and mod the hell out of it, hopefully the lighter dakota with a Hemi modded up to around 460hp would blow the doors off of a Ram SRT. But I am not the expert what do all of you other Dakota fans think.

Well Chris, I do have to say a wide open PCM is different. My only question is: Did you buy the truck new or used?
And for less than $6,000.00 you can put on a Kenne Bell 6# Twin Screw Super Charger, and a good exhaust including headers, and get well over the anticipated 100 hp and also improve the torque all the way trough the RPM range. The S/C wine will sound really killer also. That set up on the 4.7 headers, exhaust, Super Charger should get you another 150 hp more, and add this to the 230 hp stock, and WALA 380 hp. This will give you the chance to iritate the Ford Lightnin's.

Wow 122mph when the speedo only goes to 120mph. I highly doubt your beat some R/T with 3.55 Tall gears, slush Auto tranny, heavy parasitic 4x4, with the added weight of a Club Cab on a stock 4.7L. If somehow you did, you could of raced the same R/T twice :) with the blown engine. Maybe it could of been a SXT 6 banger?
If you want more power from your 4.7L that seems to fly already, just add a Kenny Bell Supercharger, headers, and save the rest.

What brand exhaust mods do you recommend to go with the KB supercharger? A hundred hp sounds like a lot. The s/c only adds 65 (@6lbs). Anyway, I'm getting one next week and would like to know what exhaust changes I should make to help it breath easier. Thanks.

How is it working for you without the clutch fan? Any temp problems? I was thinking about putting in an electric fan, but have heard that some people had problems keeping the temp down with them. What kind of fan did you use? Thanks.

Christopher- I would have to call BS on your supposed R/T kills with your truck.
1. Your truck is AWD...Added weight of the drivetrain makes it difficult to believe you beat an R/T.
2. Like it was said before, your 3.55 gears....um...yeah
3. You have a club cab....more weight to add with your drive train. Your horse power to weight ratio is definitely way more unbalanced to an R/T CC or RC.
4. I have NEVER heard of a bone stock 4.7L AWD CC with 3.55 gears and 235 flywheel hp beat a 250hp 3.92 gears 5.9L 2 wheel drive R/T....
If you had a Regular 2 wheel drive 4.7L CC and raced an R/T CC. I could see that happening, but not with the truck you have...

Okay, all of you non-believers. I DO KNOW for a fact that I beat TWO Different R/T's. Maybe the people in the trucks didnt know what they were doing but I know what I did. And please correct me if I am wrong, but I was told that the 3.92 gears are great for off the line and acceleration. but the 3.55 is better for top speed. <---by a few different credible sources. And I guess that I should clarify how me and the R/T's were racing. I was NEVER a straight out drag race. The first one I beat was trying to pass me on a 2 lane street that merged into 1 lane about 3 miles ahead of us and we were already going about 55mph. I saw him trying to pass so I accelerated, so did he and needless to say he never left my rear view mirror. The second R/T was when we were at a red light and when it turned green he sped off at first but he saw that I wasnt racing at first he slowed down. I then gunned it and started to catch him and passed slowly passed him. I personally dont see why its so unblelievable that my truck didnt beat these two R/T's. I love to race people all of the time and especially all of those little Fast and the furious wannabes. YES I do get beat alot of times when those guys have moded something other than the exhaust and spoiler. But another thing that is more unbelievable until I seen it was my recent cross country trip from California to Florida and back to California was that at an average speed of 80-90mph on Interstate 40 I got an average 36MPG. But thanks for those who recommended upgrades for my truck.

My friend's Honda barely gets 30MPG at those speeds.
If you weigh more, have less horsepower, smaller gearing...you will lose. Unless the others aren't really racing.
I love my truck...I think it is fairly fast. And might be able to hold its own on a track. But I am also not the greatest thing on wheels. You sound like my friend with a full size 94ish Ford F-150 with a V-6 who says he is faster than me. Just aint true. I have a 97, 318 Regular cab, and the 3.92 gears...4x4.

the temp is fine, the fan kicks on when the
temp guage hits the middle. and it is friggin
hot right now!!!!! 100+ by mid this week.
If I run my AC, the temp stays way down cause
the elec fan is always running.
On the freeway, the temp guage is all the way
to the line on the left (sorry 2001's dont have
numbers on the guage)
I will eventually hook up a remote turn on
switch, so I can cool it down at the track
without having to run the AC
Oh, BTW, my 3.55 "tall gears" and auto slush
tranny beat a couple of R/T's at the track...they
definately had the faster truck, but that night, I
was the better driver...I could probably get
smoked by some POS pinto, if my tires dont
hook up, it all depends on the driver.
looks like "christopher" succeeded in
antagonizing everyone.

I wasn't going to say anything , until I read the MPG. 36 MPG!!?? Did you forget to mention that you were being towed by a fanatical tow truck driver , and that you had a small fuel leak just enough to register on the guage and thats how you got 36MPG??? Yeh , that must have been what happened , you just forgot to say it.
Did I mention that the secret entrance to the Bat Cave is in the bed of my truck? Bat Man and Yoda do yoga in there on Saturday nights. But only if I use the hover mode , that came stock.

I dont belive your story cuz, well listen to this.
As much as i love my truck. a 2001 patriot blue regular cad 2 wheel drive slt+ dakota. i have a 4.7L V-8 as well. and ive screwed with club cad r/t's and have gotten my ass kicked every time. and the only car i screwed with a v-6 mustang convertible i screwed with gave me a run for my money. we started at a stoplight and the front end of their car was at my driver window until we reached damn near 90 and i kept going and they slowed down. I just wanted to voice my opinion that i dont think your stories are true. dont get me wrong i love my dakota and i love the 4.7L. I just cant wait till i can get enough money to make some serious engine modifications. the only thing ive done so far is put dual exhaust. and im pleased w/ the sound but it didnt help performance

OKAY OKAY, 36 was a TYPO 26mpg is what I actually got. Hey I admit that even 26 sounds unbelievable. But seriously thats what I got when averaging 80 to 90 mph on cruise control. And as for beating the two R/T's, All I can say is I know what I did and wish you all were there to see it. Besides dont any of you read any of the other messege forums on here like the General and Performance catagories. I wasnt the first or the last to beat a R/T with a truck like mine. And if any of you R/T owners want to race me, come to California around the Vacaville/Fairfield area. I will see you around.

I'll race ya!! of course I smoke GT's and Lightnings too, but I am in Texas...too bad...
So, when you say you raced these R/T's here are some things that clue it in that it in no way was a friggin race:

Let me reiterate the fact that you said it was NEVER a straight out drag race. If it wasn't a race, why call it one. Another thing, you saw he was trying to pass so you sped up...That makes you a dick man...not some champion of a race.

He sped off but saw that you were not racing...Again, if it was not a race, don't call it one...He was already in deceleration when you "BLEW" right by him...nice kill (sarcasm is thick).
Honestly, it was not racing in my book. You say you like racing, make sure it is a real race. Red light to green light, none of that pu$$y stuff you call racing, waiting til they are unaware that you want to race then you decide "what the heck"
Another thing, how fast were you going in both instances? The first one on the highway, was there traffic? and you are a dick for speeding up on someone trying to pass you...pat yourself on the back for that one... On the second one, did you pass him when he was slowing down for a turn? or did you get barely ahead of him at 30 MPH and call it a kill?

Flame retardent is dripping from my hair and sleeves.
I have a 2000 ClubCab Sport. 4.7 with the 3.55 rear and a 5-spd. I have added a Volant Tube, a 70 mm TB, a PCM Flash, a full 3" exhaust and taken off the clutch fan. I'm really only running 14.96 in the 1/4 mile so far (my first nite out with the PCM flash), but the FASTEST R/T the other Friday nite was running a 16.38..... I can't vouch for his driving skill, his set-up, or what was wrong. All I know is that I beat three individual R/T's in three true heads up races at an NHRA track.
He may suck at driving, his rear tires may have been inflated to 45 psi. i don't care. A win is a win. I crossed the line first.
Then on the way home, I got an average of 23 mpg.
Just adding fuel to the fire.
