Subject: 4.7 Crate Motor
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking at purchasing a 4.7 crate motor that was originally for use in a 2005 Dodge Durango, I am planning on putting it into a 2001 Dodge Dakota (has a factory 4.7 in it now). Will these two motors interchange with no problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan

The engine won't work with your PCM. The 1999-2002 4.7L engines have 16 tooth crank and cam tone rings. They went to 32 tooth tone rings starting in 2003.

It could be a "simple" swap by replacing the tone rings and away you go. But as I understand it, the crank and its tone ring are balanced together.

I'm sure it's no easy task to dissemble the engine's bottom end or the one head for the cam (only one cam has the tone ring). But if you are up for the work (and can do it) knock yourself out!

Thanks for the info Modain, it would have really sucked to buy that crate motor and discovered that it wouldnt have worked in my 01 Dak.

On a side note, what kind of mileage do you get with you 4.7 w/ manual trans, and your 2.5 w/manual trans? Just curious.

Thanks,
Dan

No problem. Some people on this site are still lurking to exchange useful information. I'm glad you asked before you bought yourself into trouble.

Driving my 4.7L QC gingerly (meaning no tire spinning, rocketing, etc.) I can get 18MPG combined driving. About 85% freeway and the rest stop and go. And this is driving 75-80 on the freeway.

My son drives the 2.5L RC and gets 20MPG. I don't feel the truck is geared correctly for the tire size and the weight.

My $.02 - the 2MPG difference is not a compelling reason to get a 4-banger. I bought it for him so he wouldn't have an overpowered vehicle to get into trouble quickly (you really can't drag race a 4-banger RC).

Yeah, I used to have a 99 3.9 CC w/ an auto trans. It was a great truck, averaged about 19 mix. Now I got an 88 4X4 LA3.9 5spd, an 87 Ram 360 4spd, and a new Hemi Ram...If the paycheck isn't going towards paying the insurance, its going towards gas! Oh well, you only live once, might as well enjoy it!

(Forgot to mention that you have a nice collection there!)

would like to put a 4.7 in a J body, is there an after-market carb manifold made for the 4.7 and would 4.7 make a good fit for older car? Never seen one, seems about time.

They've been doing this with the Ford 4.6's for
years. Try calling or writing Jegs or Summit, If
anybody would know they would.
(if the parts are available they would be the ones
to have them)

I just bought 02 Dakota four door 4 WD 4.7 V8 the engine
was ran hot and needs replaced. I have been told only 02
4.7 V8 will work. Can anyone tell me why that is???? Any
suggestions???? I have found a wrecked 02 Dakota 4wd w/
3.9 v6 with 141k mile for $500 what would I be in for making
this swap. I do not really want to go this route. The 4.7 was a
very strong running truck. I haven't had any luck yet locating
one. My truck is for sale for $1900 not running needs
windshield and tlc

The cam tone ring on the 02 is different. I compared the 01 and 02 side by side and are definetely different, then in i think 03 they went to a different crank and cam tone ring as well. I think you could change the cam gear and get away with it but that would require you to pull the timing chain off that cam and put in your current gear. Also you would want to research and double check the crank tone ring isn't different.

I have an 01 durango 4.7 I am parting out. It has a rod knock and needs a crank shaft which is 250 bucks and comes with all of the bearings you need to replace it. I will sell the complete engine for $500, so for $750 you would have a running engine. These typically sell for $1500.

If I pull it this weekend without you saying yet, I plan to fix it and then sell it for $1500. Let me know if you are interested
