Subject: Crankshaft Position Sensor Mod
IP: Logged

Message:
I got some questions about this mod. I bought a new sensor so if I screw up, I'll have my stock one which I know works. Anyway...first question, how exactly do I slot it..what tools do I need to do it, what size? Also how easy is it to reach if I pull the inner fender off? Which directions do I slot it... I haven't had a chance to look at how the current sensor is placed and I want to have the new one slotted when I take it apart so I only gotta take the truck apart once to do it and won't have to leave it apart while I'm modifying the sensor. I'm including a pic of the new sensor...can you guys tell me which is the correct way to slot it at the angle shown...either option A (left) or B (right).

Thanks a ton,
Josh

GB, i did mine on my '00 QC 3.9 5spd. got it from underneath. not bad at all. you need to elongate the 2 holes about 3/8". you could use a dremel or drill bit. facing the back of the motor, slot the left hole to the outside of the sensor, the right to the inside of the sensor. to adavnce timing, the sensor needs to move down towards the starter. don't forget to pull the grommet out of the bellhousing when you remove the sensor.

good question.

I think daddio missed the neat little green letters on the picture (although his answer is very good indeed).

My mind unfortunatly cannot wrap itself around the 3d space/time continium to visualize the placement of the sensor bracket. So I will re-ask your questions. On the PICTURE above, look for the green A and B. Which one of these should be elongated (left/right or up/down)?

LOL grey, the picture didn't download the first time i posted. slot "A" & "B" like you have "B" marked. the part of the bracket that the bolts go through fits on the block right behind the head. curved portion of bracket faces the block. "B" hole will be closet to the dist. my sensor is plastic with steel inserts.

Use the "B" and slot both holes to the right so the sensor can be moved down toward the starter. I had to remove the splash shield to access my sensor there was not enough room to get to it from above or below.

Thank you very much guys... I think in a way it's much more difficult to do without seeing the actual sensor until AFTER the new one's been modified, but I like to play it safe.

I have got to disagree with you greyDAK...
Haven't you ever seen those old roadrunner cartoons? That poor coyote was always getting squashed by a safe (or anvil, rock, piano...)
Sorry, I just couldn't resist :)

BTW Josh, you know that you're going to have to post an "after" pic of the sensor for us!!!

Good idea... are you going to want an after pic of the mod or the tires after the mod? =P

I'll charge my battery tonight and see if I can take pics when I do it. I'm waiting on my friend to bring me new plastic fasteners so I can put my inner fender back on once it's done (he gets a 40% discount at Napa so I'm having him buy them for me...lol). I'm doing it using that method since it seems like it's the easiest way to do it on a gen3.

Okay...new question(s)...as far as slotting the sensor. On "B" I have 3/16" before there is no metal left to slot. Do I want to leave anything there or just basically cut a section out? Same goes for "A" except since I'd be going to the inside of the bracket there, I'd be cutting a small chunk off the bottom right corner. Well hell...I'll make a picture to show what I mean...

Is that what it would look like cut? Or am I missing something here?

Uh haven't you allready cut it??? Because that is exactly what it should look like, unless you want to advance the timing to the most that it can be advanced with the sensor... BUT you have to have a very cautious hand to do that...

Yes in other words that is exactly how the slotting should look... The gap on part B is not so much to where the washer and bolt won't still catch and hold it, so no need to worry there...

To advance the timing to it's max without notching the bell housing you would need to take out half of the bracket going straight down beside wear the wires go into the plastic, then notch out the plastic itself "to clear the bellhousing" down 1/8" and out the 1/8 "which should be the distance to the outer edge of the plastic... All you have to do here is make sure you don't cut the wires... You would also have to make the section "A" slot a little further and even then the bolts would still catch enough to hold the sensor in place...

I found this extra notching to be very beneficial in making the extra hp that I was looking for... I'm not sure exactly how many degrees the extra notching will advance the timing all total, but I though it was well worth it...

PhotoShop, is there anything it cant do? Maybe I can photoshop my Dak from a nice v6 to an evil v10? Certainly will be a lot cheaper.

haha...I think you need to sink the shocks a lil with that much weight in the back. lol
Here's the best photoshop job I've seen so far...Sicminds made a REGULAR CAB 2005 Dakota since DC will no longer be offering it in the Dakotas. At least not for 2005.

Penryn... supposedly this mod will advance the timing around 3-4 degrees (probably closer to 3). Not sure how much horsepower that will add though.

Yeah, that pic (modified sensor) had fooled me for a second too, until I read your post Josh.
BTW, does this mean that you're keeping the V6?
It'd be a shame for you to get the 4.7, because I'd miss out on a lot of great V6 mods!!!

greyDAK, is that an ACME anvil?

be careful though. if you advance your timing too much, you can have detonation (even with autolite 3923 plugs)

I may have to switch back to 3923's after I do that one...but I'm already running the 180 thermo and premium gas will suck but won't KILL me...lol

Oh yeah, daknblk, I'm still hoping to get a 4.7 soon... the 3.9's alright, but because I'll be driving around 60 miles daily for college, I'm gonna need something that can take those tricky winter storms we get at times. My 2wd would be all over the place.
