Subject: V6 exhaust question
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 Dakota extended cab V6 2 wheel drive. I was looking at trying a Votrex muffler. One shop told me I had to replace the front and back pipes with 3 inch and another shop said they could intall the muffler and leave the pipes as is. Is one of these set ups better than the other?
Thanks...

If you go with anything bigger than 2.5 before and after (single exit) or 2.25 (duals) you will lose lowend power.

I didn't lose any low end power when adding 2.5" duals from the muffler back and a straight-thru Gibson muffler. Butt dyno says I gained. I think having a more free flowing intake helps.

I had a 3" system and I lost low end. If you put on a 3" system you will lose low end too. You will gain high end though.

what if you put a y-pipe behind the cat and ran dual 2.25 pipes into 3" tips?

A friend of mine has the Flowmaster one chamber race muffler dumped before the rear axle on his S-10. It's a 2.5" in/out Circle Track muffler. I think I'll put one on my truck pretty soon, in place of my Flowmaster 40. It's the loudest you can get, and in Summit it says that it is "the least restrictive muffler flowmaster makes".

Summit Part # FLO-9430109 $59.99

I have a Flowmaster two chamber muffler with a turndown on my 2000 3.9L and I am very happy with the sound. I have heard lots of people saying that Flowmasters don't sound good on Dodges, but my experience is the opposite.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. I'm not going to try the Vortex now. I am getting a Dynomax Super Turbo #17748 from Jegs for a lot less money and leaving the pipes as is. I'm hoping this combined with the cold air intake I have will make a noticable improvement.

the 40 series 2 chamber is the loudest of all the flowmaster. with the exception of the single chamber, but that wont do anything for your truck. if your goin to buy a flowmaster buy it off ebay. there much cheaper on there.
