Subject: Can I use a 318 TB on my '89 3.9L V6?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello, just discovered this site. Very nice place to get help. Nice people, too! Anyway, I have a 1989 Dakota (2WD standard cab) with a 3.9L V6 (w/ TB)and automatic transmission. Currently, everything is stock (kinda boring). I was planning to add a less-restrictive exhaust (possibly removing the catalytic converter) and add a 14in air cleaner assembly. I wanted more umph.
I was wondering if I could replace the stock throttle body with another throttle body from a 318 5.2L V8. Is this possible? Could I atleast interchange parts between the two? If not, is there ways to add more preformance just in the area of the intake and exhaust? This would be very helpful!
...Oh, I just remembered one more thing. Does anyone know if the SMEC/SBEC on the passenger side fender really need to have that little air duct attached at all times? The manual is of little help. Since I am adding that new air cleaner assembly, I wasnt sure if this would mess up the computer any or not. Thanks!!

you can put a v8 tb on the v6, but you will need a throttle cable off of a v8. ive been told that the v6 cable wont work for the v8 tb's. krc performance sells some, but the 48mm goes for 400. but they say not to go over 50mm because it can kill any torque you made before. krcperformance.com. Thanks for replying. Now can you tell me what is different from the throttle cable for both of the throttle bodies? What is so different about the two? Why is it so bad to have one too long? Is it that difficult to remove one of these from a dak in a junkyard? Will it work to get a tbi and/or throttle cable out of an '88 dakota or a '90 to '92 dakota? I was sort of interested in an increase in power of my dakota. BTW, do you know if that SMEC/SBEC on the pass side fender really need that air duct attached to it? It's running okay removed. Your were helpful, thanks again.

I would question the validity of the V8 cable being different from the V6. Don't know for a fact, but why would it be different? The ducting just funnels the air for a good air charge to give good info for computer sampling, but as you've already seen, not do-or-die necessary. When Mopar made Shelby V8 models, they used V6 Dakota Sport models for a starting point, and the throttle cables are the same there.

Are you sure mark 1? My '89 dakota has the SMEC/SBEC computer on the passenger fender and it has a 1.25 inch flexable air duct that attaches to the main air duct that goes to the air cleaner assembly. unless that isnt what you are talking about.

Sorry. Brain took a walk on me. Musta been thinkin' about another brand. As I seem to recall, it's just for cooling the PCM. The air temp sensor is in the air cleaner.

Thanks gen1dak! That was one of the better responses that I have recieved on that subject. The Haynes manual is crappy, doesnt explained much. That explains why when I looked through this little opening, I saw what appeared to be a heatsink for the transistors in there. I'll keep the main air duct attached to it, even though I will get a new air cleaner assembly. Coulnt hurt to keep that air duct attached to help cool the PCM. Thanks again!

witch has poor start and idle quality[cold] on the 3.9

port the 3.9,remove the torque step, there is some
improvement in power here

i have a tbi thats ported for the 88-91 3.9s & 5.2s for sale $100 exchanged,you use your sensors

So the V8 tbi doesnt have larger ports than the V6 tbi? Thanks! Now can I simply find some used injectors from a V8 tbi and slap them into the V6 tbi I have? Will it run okay? Should I make other mods to the tbi, or should I just bolt on the entire tbi for the V8 onto my 3.9L?
Can I find used 48mm ports (or any better ports compared to the stock ones) from another dodge of some kind and use the top half of the tbi (w/ the injectors) on that? To re-bore them out sounds costly. Is it? Dont mind if the parts have beed used. I am looking at the costs now. What does it mean to remove the torque step?
Hope Im not asking too much. I appreciate everybodies help and all. I love these boards!

i had poor idle when cold when i used the v8 tbi,
it gave the v6 a little to much fuel at start up,
i had to hold the throttle to the floor to start
cold, then it took a min or so before it idle right.

it would repeat this after the truck sat half hr 45min

i put the v6 injectors in problem gone

i ported the tbi[v8]before in put it on

the torque step,is the step you see looking down the throttle body, about 3/4 of a "[inche]up from the throttle plates down to the plates.

remove this, blend it down to the plates

i don,t know about plates from something else or
boring it,i haven,t tryed that.

this helped some from 1500-2000rpm up to 4400rpm
when the rev limited

did,nt notice any improvements off idle

Ok, there is a huge problem on this site called mis-information, and it blows me away.

I installed a v8 TB from a 318 the other day on a v6. This was for a 97 Dakota. You need the v8 TB cable which hooks up to your gas pedal because the way it hooks up to your Throttle Body is totally different on a v6 than on a v8. You must get the cable or rig it to work, which I wouldn't recommend.
The ports are bigger in a v8 TB, just hold them up to each other and it is obvious. That is why the v8 TB gives you more air.
One other note...you must reset your PCM by disconnecting the neg battery teminal and holding the key in the starting position for 30 seconds, then hooking it back up. The PCM must learn the new setting from your engine after you have installed the new TB. If you don't do this, it will run real rough as mentioned above. Also, it takes time for your PCM to fully adjust to the new TB. There is a significant difference in power and torque but it takes time for the PCM to reach the full potential.
I am not schooled mechanic, I work at a body shop, but I can tell you that there is some definite mis-conceptions here on this forum, so beware of info by certain postings.

Hey! When you guys come in to read a post, make sure you chech the original posted message before you reply (not you roger). See, when ??????? replied, he assumed that I had a'97 dak, which i think had the problems with the wrong throttle cable. I have a 1989 dakota, most likely very different. The guy with the name of ?????? shouldn't shoot people down by saying they have wrong information. Hey vern, I appreciate your comments. Do you have a Gen I dakota? I just wanted to get the right info here.

I bet that I will have a rough idle with the V8 tbi, but (for the '88 to '91 models) are the ports on this bigger tbi come bigger than the ports of the V6 tbi? Is the only thing different from the two throttle bodies the size of the injectors? What I am asking is if I put the V8 tbi on and slap those V6 injectors back in, did I really make a difference?

I dont want to be rude or anything, but I like feedback from those who have experience with the older gen I dakotas. Not those who own the new dakotas that think it 100% just like mine. Maybe they are exactly the same, I dont know. Thanks...

Wait, I was never talking about any "mag motors". Not once was mag motors mentioned before here, I think. Besides, you arent sense, making much! I dont know why you are afraid to reveal your name. What are you trying to hide? I would like to know your name, I can trust you more. Give more info on your truck of any experience with gen I dakotas.

Please be more specific when you answer, do not tell me that everybody who replied to me is completely wrong with only a few sentenses. If you are trying to help me, then help me. Why wont this tbi work, Mr. Anonymous? What is wrong from what vern and Gen1dak said? They probably own or worked with a similar dakota that I did. I trust what they say because they gave me plenty of believable information that has been, lately, so hard to get. I really appreciated the time that vern and gen1dak put into helping me. I hate to be rude, but it is hard to be kind and understanding when you are being so uncooporative with me....

...now look what youve done. You make me have to use the blue, frowning smily face....

Thanks for helping! I aplologise for the last few messages, that guy without a name wasnt helping me too well. He was getting kind of annoying.

They are thae same except for the injectors. I am clear on that now! Now is it easy to bore it out yourself? What size is the stock tbi ported at (in mm)? How do you remove that torque step? I look down into that tbi an about 3/4in above the plates, I dont see any protrusions or anything that could be removed. I am interested in getting a larger or extra tbi or injectors, but I dont have a whole lotta money on me now. I was thinking that a junkyard may have a used one in ok shape to modify or fix up. I am nott sure. Thanks for the offer. Is that tbi your selling ported to 48mm? Thanks for still being there to help....
