Subject: What Can I Expect Realistically HP WISE
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I finally started pulling my heads for the port and polish and was just wondering what kind of hp, performance, and fuel mileage I can expect from the mods soon to be :)) This will all go in a 99' 2wheel drive reg cab dakota...

To start with current mods ---

cold air intake
tornado
holley performance TB "dual 52mm bores"
bosch quad plugs, wires, cap and rotor

Mods on the way while into head pull ---

relocated crank and iat sensors
port matching tb to intake "dual 53 or 54mm bores"
head port and polish
head shave .020"
intake shave .020" "to match heads"
head shave will also extend pushrods .020" "due to unaltered pushrods"
crowler 1.7 ratio rr's
gibson headers
gibson "extreme" dual exhaust with carsound highflow cat
new o2 sensors
underdrive crank pulley "ASP"
180 degree Tstat
May go with the brass cap, rotor, and plug wires advised by Larry in other post as well
shave out torque step of holley tb for full 52mm's
port match intake to heads

I am also going to be switching out the AX15 5speed for the T56 6speed "viper, cobra" along with the rear gears for a set of 355's and a posi or lsd which ever you want to call it...

I may also go with a different cam, but don't know of the alluminum that was recommended on here some time back and how good it will do... I also know some people who have run into vaccum problems with over lifting of the valves? Would I run into more valve cover clearance problems as well with this "I'm know I would, but how much"?

Have I missed anything really important or something I really need to consider? Well what do yall think I will gain out of this? I know it's nothing like what Larry is getting out of his, but hopefully will get me into the 200+ rwhp range :))

Thanks,
Greg

Yeh right now I'm looking at just a touch over $5000 maybe even closer to $6000... That's mainly due to tranny and rearend which alone is around 3 to 4000...

Remove the divider in the intake and shorten the
runners to 14"

But one thing here you have no cam listed the
stock cam is a little weak for all the head work
even with the 1.7's just not enough to take
advantage of ported heads

But you need to stay with the 1.6 ratio or have
a custom cam made to run the 1.7 or the springs
will bind over .500 lift

crower 1.6 rollers and a good cam

much is all the head work goin to cost you? and while ur at it u should get a stock intake manifold and cut down the runners and add in sum bigger injectors or just the FOMS 19 lbs. i thought 52 mm was to big for a v6 that was not forced inducted? hows the truck run with it?

What brand cam would you recommend Larry? Didn't fastdodges.com or something like that have some available... It was suppost to be alluminum forged or something like that...

Allright I know what you mean by remove the dividers, but how about the shorten the runners part? Don't have any pics by chance do you?

Thanks Again,
Greg

The head work won't cost me too much due to me doing the work myself... This older race car engine builder is going to be helping me with it, but he said it wouldn't cost me anything allthough I am going to pay him some no matter what ; ))

The fuel injectors was one thing I forgot to list... I was planning on using the 19lbs multi port ones vs single port stock ones that most of the time didn't even produce 16lbs even though rated for 19lbs...

So far I have been very happy with the holley, with better performance, mpg, and hp :)) You really need to run ported 48mm tb's with stock intake which is why I'm going to be porting out the intake to match my tb... I just got through porting, shaving, and polishing my old tb and will reinstall it first when done with my engine to make sure that it well seal off and idle right before saling it along with the helix spacer that I was using with it... It won't work with the holley :((

Any thoughts on hp gains and what else I might need... I was thinking about ignition, but don't really won't to change it too much...

I would have really like to have stroked it and put in some hemispherical pistons just out on the market, then supercharge it with 12 lbs of boost, but I don't have the extra 6 grand to do this :((

That's Magnum Performance. Billet steel roller cam. I believe Hughes Engines has some stuff too. Excess valve overlap will kill vacuum faster than lift. In fact, a high lift, short duration cam tends to be more computer-friendly.

Hughes Engines has some good cam choices and
pics of there stage 1 manifold with the devider
cut and the runners shortened.

But depending on what rpm range you want to run
a hotter cam will drop the vac at idle and low
rpm, and I would not go behond 50mm on the
manifold bores

It all depends on how the motor is going to run
3000 to 6000, 2000 to 4000

my 268/272 came runs strong between 2500 and 5000
Hughes has a cam almost identical to what I am
running 266/270 advertised duration

So the billet steel roller cam with the 1.6's or 1.7's... I may change out springs anyway since might be doing cam swap so that won't really matter... Would this be more computer friendly???

j&j would 13inch runners make any more power then the 14 inch ones? seeign as hughes uses a 14 for mostly stock motors and 12 for built? so that would make 13 a good choice no? i have a intake manifold sitting up in my room waiting 4 me to do sumthing but i have no idea on what to do

you put a tornado in a V6 that alone will negate anything else you do.

seriously tho the money you spent on the tornado was a waste as the dam things do not work in a fuel injected vehicle. PERIOD

yes 13 would give you more power but your power
band would also move up into a higher rpm

14" 2000 to 4000 rpm
13" 2500 to 5000 5500 rpm
12" 3000 to 6000 rpm

mine are at 13.5 and my power range is 2500 to
5000 rpm

However going behond 14" starts to effect the low
end my truck at idle only has 17 pounds of vac a
stock motor has around 19 and under 2000 rpm not
much there that is why I run a higher stall
converter and 3.91 gears or I would be dead out
of the hole

Greg if you use a cam over .500 lift you need to
change out the springs retainers and keepers the
stock springs will bind at .500

The R/T springs fit right on the V6 heads and are
good for a .525 lift and 6000 rpm

Ok I went to hughesengines.com looked up the intakes saw the pictures, could tell where they took out the divider, but still don't understand the whole runners part? Is this something else that I'm seeing in the pictures, but just not reallizing it? It isn't the plate that that goes through the center or which I was thinking to be the divider is it? How would you shorten this either way?

I currently only have about an hour a day to work on the truck and since starting yesterday I have gotten the intake off, radiator drained, all the stuff off of the front "powersteering pump, alternator" pulled off passenger side valve cover and exhaust header, and loosened the rocker bolts and all the other stuff that goes with this stuff... I could had had most of this done yesterday if it weren't for my radiator drain not opening up right or rather sticking... It took 30minutes of running around looking for solutions for that before I even got the drain to open... All I got done yesterday was the drian opened, tb off, and most electrical disconected and marked... Oughta have atleast one head off tomorrow :)) Everything still at the shop so I can't take the intake apart and look at it right now:// Maybe I'll remember to load it up and bring it home with me tomorrow ; ))

Thanks Again,
Greg

i looked at hughes engines .com and they seem to have a lot of stuff available that i didn't even know was made. How much power can be gained by using their new tb that flows 43 percent more air than stock?

The runners are cut on the pics you see there
when you look at your stock intake you will see
they stick out farther

If your going to try there 50mm tb you need to
have a little more done to the engine or it will
basicly be like adding a V8 body.

cam, intake, ported heads than you could run a
true 50mm and get the gains

Greg if you need the part #s for the springs
retainers and keepers I have them here they work
great on the V6 heads and will run with any cam
out there unless you go over .525 lift than I have
a # for a spring good for .525 to .600 lift that
will also go right on the V6 heads

I got my last head off today "drivers side" and will start cleaning them up for the port and polish tomorrow :)) I also, while I had some time left over in my hour period, I went ahead and took off my intake belly pan... Good thing I went for the port and polish from the looks of it... I had some oil sludge in the bottom and kinda all around in the intake... I couldn't really tell that my gasket was bad or that it was coming in through the intake vacuum lines... I'm assumming gasket since it was quite built up, but wasn't just running in like some on here have said...

I will say one thing... I'm glad I use a good true synthetic motor oil, because the internals are very clean looking unlike some engines I've pulled apart that were coated in sludge ; ))

You know I was wondering the same thing on the hp gains from the heads, tb true flow, and the intake...

I may just order a new allready taken care of intake from hughes, then even start to bother with it ://

I may also chagne my mind depending on how much money I can borry, on going ahead with the stroking and supercharging, but I'm doubting my mom would let me borry that much at once...

Larry if you could just post both of the part #'s to the valve springs just in case, that would be very helpfull...

Thanks Again,
Greg

the reason i ask about power is that i am debating where to do this work or go ahead and get a 318. The problem is that i dont know if it would be worth it to try and put a different motor in there and lose the gas mileage that i get now. i plan on getting another c omplete enging and having it rebuilt using the performance parts from hughes engines. i just want to know what i would be looking at power wise with all that stuff done.
