I have had it with Dodge. My truck isn't even 2 years out of warranty and I have had a whole slew of problems to fix at my expense of course. I feel like a trailer park dweller because my truck is either half torn apart or sitting in my driveway or garage with the hood up. I was at the dealer last weekend ready to start talking turkey on trading for a new 2500 Ram but I must have came to my senses after I pondered the reliability i have had with Dodge. I have owned 3 Dodge products from new and this will be my last. Chevy 2500HD right around the corner. Now I just have to convince my wife that her Chrysler 300M won't last any longer than those cheap leather seats that are already showing signs of cracking. God only knows why she likes it so much. It isn't that quick for the quoted horsepower and door dings appear if you look at it too hard with their thin a$$ sheetmetal. Maybe you guys enjoy getting all greasy working on your poorly engineered DC crappola, but I for one would rather be having fun with the toys or kicking back than grease up to my elbows fixing cr@p.

Au Revoir DC and your no good won't stand behind your products mentality.

my family has owned nothing but chrysler products for over 40 years and there have never been any problems like the ones you claim your having. maybe if you took better care of your vehicles they would still be running like they should.

My 300M company car had 120,000 miles on it when it went back to the leasing company and still looked brand new, except for the front facia where I curbed it in a parking lot. Whoops, sorry.

My 01 Dakota has 64,000 miles on it and still looks and runs brand new except for the paint on the top of the box where I drag stuff across the edge while loading/unloading.

I think you'll find all makes have their bugs. Hell, look at MicroSoft products; full of bugs and everybody still buys them.

Ryan,

I think I take good enough care. I don't abuse them. Glad to see that you have had good luck. I have not.

GB2000,
My dak is so slow it eats its own dust. Anyway I didn't buy it for speed.

Spiller,
120,000 on a lease? Whoa. Anyway, my point is that DC uses substandard parts and won't stand behind them. I bought a Chevy GTZ berreta new in '91 and the car was just out of warranty when I received a recall notice because the 2.3L quad 4 engines were having gasket failures causing coolant to get in the engine. To make a long story short the recall was to replace the gaskets only and the dealer convinced the rep without any prodding on my part to drop a new engine in my Berreta AND EXHAUST SYSTEM. I can't remember now but the total bill was around 7000 dollars and I think I only had to pay 100 or 150 dollars of it. DC won't fix sh@T unless you threaten them and I have found my local 5 star to be less then trustworthy when I have indentified concerns that they dismisssed as non issues that later surfaced as problems to be fixed on my dime. That is my biggest gripe.

You have more of a problem with the dealer than with the truck. Anything mechanical will break down. You wouldn't believe the problems I've had with GM and Ford products. It looks like you are using a crook for dealer. My only complaint with my Dak is the gas mileage. So far it has been a good vehicle with no problems. I hope I didn't just jinx myself. Excuse me while I go knock on some wood and sprinkle some salt........

My Dakota has 130000 miles and only has had one repair for a leaky thermostat housing other than normal repair items. Many times a new vehicle will have small problem and then the dealer asigns it to an incompetent tech. who make the problems worse and creates other problems. I had a 1975 VW Rabbit that the dealer had put an air conditoner on. The guy that installed it did it incorrectly even to the point that it cracked the head. He even installed one of the bracket bolts backward so that when the nut fell off of the bolt it broke the timing belt. The waranty repair bills exceded 1/2 the cost of the car. As soon as it was out of waranty I bought a book called "How to keep your Rabbit alive" and started doing my own work. I wound up driving the car a little over 250,000 miles.

What do you mean they won't stand by their substandard parts? If that is your main concern then go with a kia over the chevy. chevy will walk out on you 2 years before DC, and 5 years before kia.

Embarrased,

I agree with Spiller, all makes have their problems, though I too have had more problems than I would like with my Dakota. One positive, I can say that I have not had any drive train problems, so far the engine and tranny have been solid. My major complaint is the brakes, or lack there of and the front end suspension and steering components--way to many problems with a truck with only 24K miles and what I would call some pretty easy driving habits. My mechanics both think the Dakotas front end is not heavy enough and say they see lots of problems with ball joints, tie-rods, etc. But so far the engine is still running strong.

Okay, to furthur agree with you guys that all makes have their problems.
My parents bought a 2001 BMW X5 new in July of 2000, The handles great, good power for an inline 6 with only 3.0L. Looks sharp too.
But so far we have had the brakes done (car had 35,000 when brakes were done, tires at the same time) but that is everyday stuff.

What is not everyday stuff, The water pump went at 41,000. Both high and low beam headlights went out at 42,500 (the day before my drivers test by the way). Both front A arms have been replaced, the rear hatch has be replaced because of leakage. Windshield wiper moter. T-stat, control switch for the fan to blow heat inside the car.
The drivers side seat belt doesn't retract, be replaced 3 times. Right now, all the lights on the right side of the car don't work (meaning the blinker, fog light, head light, brake light) I haven't brought the car to the shop yet to see whats wrong. I'm afraid of the bill, it's not under warentee anymore.

So all makes, even the good ones, have their problems.

I have had problems with my Dakota as well, but nothing huge yet.

So live life, and don't complain. it's to short.

To view both cars that I have talked about, vist

I too am a little embarrased by my dakota. I have a '98 sport with a 3.9 v6 and a 5-speed. It's just turned over 94,000 and the tranny has been sh!t ever since I bought the damned thing @ 84,000. I take care of my truck too, so don't think I beat the piss outta it. It gets reagular oil changes, washed once a week, and other regular maitenance. The dealership i bought it from replaced the clutch, slave cylinder, pressure plate, turned down the flywheel, you name it they did it, they even had a guy who builds trannys professionally look at it and he couldn't even figure out what the heck is wrong with it... and it still works like crap. Not to mention it's about the most gutless engine I've ever driven. I don't even know why I got rid of my Ford Explorer to buy it, stupid i guess. So as for me, I'm selling the truck... Ford, here I come.

Justin,

You bought a 98 3.9 with 84,000 miles on it and you're complaining about it?. That poor truck probably had the living snot beat out of it by the p/o(s).

If you want to judge the design/build quality of a vehicle you have to own it from brand spanking new. Anyone who's complaining about a used vehicle should keep quiet. You take your risks buying used with no warranty.

It seems like it is out of time real bad. then after about 30 seconds of this it takes off and runs normal. Has anyone else had this problem. It is at the dealer now. They put a copilot on and could not get a reading due to softwaer issues. Can anyone help? If so email me at nagnmule4u@mwt.net

Hold on, says you need to buy them from new to judge their reliability. I half way tend to agree with that statement but would add that I bought mine new as did many others I have read about on these threads who have had problems almost right out of the box. This to me is a pretty good indicator of the quality DC is putting out. As far as the other makes go, it could be quite possible they are made just as sh@tty these days but the question remains will they stand behind them better than DC. This is what I am betting on on my next purchase.

The way they stand behind them has more to do with the dealer than DC. Every brand has dealers that are just as bad as they come. And if you feal they are not treating you right, contact the regional director for your make of vehicle and raise the issues with them. It is their job to keep the dealers in line and they have a lot of work these days as dealers try to save money any way they can.
