It must be your dealer, I just got my cat replaced for no charge and no complaining by my dealer on my 1996.

And you want to by a Chevy????

Your complaining because your truck is nearly "two years out of warranty" and your having troubles. Well Chevy has two less years than DC so you have even more time to bitch while you work on it in your driveway!

Well, just remember this, it could be worse. My dad bought a Renout (Not spelled right) new back in the 80's. He drove it off the lot, and it started to loose oil pressure and spray the stuff all over. He took it back and the dealer said he was crazy! After three months and threatening to sue (this was before lemon laws), they finally got permission from the French factory to take the engine out. They found a dime size hole in the engine block, that was circled with yellow chalk. They still installed it, and tryed to tell my father he was crazy. That was a piece of crap, F@&# the french....

My dakota is a 2000 model with 60,000 miles on it. haven't had a major problem yet. If you don't like having to pay for repairs try purchasing a 3rd party extended warrenty....

If not try getting your hands dirty once in a while, it makes for good fun, and you might just learn a thing or two about your truck.

Things to think about.

I have been in manufacturing for almost thirty five years. I started in engineering moved into Quality and now V.P. of Operations.

My customers include DC, GM, Ford, Honda, Nissian and a few others. Reguardless of the name they are all the same. They are all about profit "THE BOTTOM LINE".

Contracts are awarded to the LOWEST BIDDER unless you are in a good ole boy click. Anyone who does not think this is true has never been in business.

Now after a contract is awarded and your in production you get hit with cost reductions. So if your margin can't take the hit you look for better (cheaper) ways to produce.

Now on to deviations, these pop up from time to time. A deviation is a nice way of saying we screwed up just a little but the parts are still usable.

Engineering changes (working out the bugs or finding ways to make it cheaper) is a way of life.

The people who build the products play a big role in the quality and people are the same all over, need I say more.

There are good and bad in all brands they are all in the same club.

FEMA's and SIR rates are researched and know in the inner circles of any company. I have seen documentation that admits 18% SIR rates. 18 out of every 100 sold will need work in the first 12 months. Damn Shame !

I'm not embarrased at all. I drive my 95 with pride. The damn thing runs like a swiss watch. Sure, I've had to replace some parts. Things wear out. I do all the work myself. Timing chain, water pump, brakes, all the regular stuff. I did have problems with the A/C blower swith. But a couple parts out the the junk yard and it's back in business. When I take it in for its oil change, every 3000 miles, The kids at Duke of Oil are always impressed by how clean it is and how well it runs. (that's right, i'll change the timing chain but not the oil) All brands of vehicle have thier particular problems. With DAKS, i've found it's timing chains, gas gauges, and blower motor switches. It's other things with other vehicles. I'm still proud of my Dakota. It's given me almost 9 years of faithful, daily, reliable service. That's a better service record than my wife has!

All right,

Thanks for everyone's reply and the occasional flame. It looks like I am getting a new truck here in the next week or so, and I have decided to get the Ram instead of the Chevy. I'm getting the 2500 Quad Cab HO diesel 4x4 loaded Laramie package. The reason I have decided to stay with DC is the 7/70 warranty might possibly outlast how long I will keep it. That is a big plus. Also I have been talking with a few loyal Ram owners and they have ha very few problems although they trade with frequency. One guy has the 1500 and he has been complaining about the rotors but I am hoping the 2500 has better quality rotors than the 1500. Anybody know? I also decided that I just didn't care for the look of the Chevy 2500. I hope I get a good truck this time with minimal problems. I am new to 4x4's and diesels but I had heard the Cummins HO is a great engine but I am just hoping the 4 speed auto tranny is better than some of their past efforts. Look forward to any helpful advice I can get before I plunk down the cash.

p.s. I am looking at 3.73 gears instead of 4.10 because I won't need it to tow that often. Does this make sense?

thanks.

Good Choice, my brother and his son both have Rams with the Cummins in them. They both pull 5th wheel campers like there is nothing back there. Real power house trucks.

I bought my 98 sport V6 new in 1998. Besides the fact that the transmission was entirely replaced at 1500 miles, I am now at 174,000 miles and have had NO PROBLEMS!! Normal wear and tear and regular maintenance... Several people have told me I'm pretty darn lucky!! I say I got the dakota made on Wednesday!!

Hey GB 2000 you mean his glow plugs, diesel's don't have spark plugs they rely on compression to force the fuel air mixture to ignite.

my 2002 dakota has been nothing but problems for me. i just hit 40,000km and this is what the dealer has replaced:computer, one of the o2 sensors, rear sway bar links, fuel pump and sender, it was stuck in 4 wheel drive, it needs ball joints, it stalls and pings, and a rear u-joint. if anyone can give me a reason not to be embarrased of my dakota, i'd like to hear it.

My friends Toyota MR2 turbo was on it's fourth motor by that time. All service was performed at the dealer too.

hey stiff noodle, tell me how that's not bad when the computer and oxygen sensor go at 8,000km, i paid over 30g's for it and they say it's my fault because i take it off road and actually use the four wheel drive system. in my mind i should have trouble free driving for at least the 3 year 60,000 bumper to bumper warranty.

What do you need a warranty for if it is going to be trouble free for 60,000?

Doh! You just can't help some of these folks. LOL

Limp Noodle, manufactures are doing that now. Since they started the hole SUV thing they expect you to use a truck as a family vehical and never go off road. I was looking to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee (since they stopped making the Cherokee, those loosers)and found out that in the warrenty it states that if you take it off the pavement it voids the warrenty. I think this is a crock of crap too, but in todays day and age of the yuppy 4x4, never use it off road, family hauler, what can you expect.

P.S. Have you also noticed that truck prices have gone through the roof, you can thank these pricks who purchase them to haul their family rather than what they were actually designed to do, haul massive amounts of stuff in the bed, behind the cab. Youy also can't buy just a stripped down 4x4 model or a work model without having to special order.

I've owned many Dodge's and many Ford's, The only problems i've ever had with a dodge was the 2.5L 4 Cyl Sohc in a 92 dodge spirit kept blowing head gaskets, but it was easy to put one on, after doing it once, it only took 3 hours to the most to slap another one in.
