I've noticed lately that my truck is surging when going down the highway, you can see the tach jump about 100 to 200 rpm, it also does it when the cruise control is on. Any ideas about what might be causing the surges?

It could be coming out of overdrive for extra power like when going up hills. Or your tach could be loose and wiggle. When does it happen, what gear does it do it in, does it go back to normal after a sec. Give more info.

IT WILL DO IT IN OVERDRIVE, AND WITH O/D OFF, I NOTICE IT MOST WHEN GOING ON LEVEL GROUND, 40 TO 70+ MPH. I CAN TELL WHEN IT DOES IT WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE TACH, THERE IS A SLIGHT BUMP, THE TACH GOES UP 100 TO 200 RPM, AND RETURNS QUICKLY.

I have the same exact problem when the cruise control is on right around 65-70, I'm usually sitting @ 2000 rpm and it will jump up 100-200 rpm briefly. I can also hear the engine rev when this happens.
I looked around and saw a post about maybe trying to replace the Throttle position sensor and or cleaning out the TB. Let me know what you come up with cause I do alot of highway driving it it gets annoying w/o my CC!
I have a 99' 3.9

You can check the operation of the Throttle Pos
Sensor. Drivers side of TB

With a volt meter, center wire on plug POS +
and the NEG - lead on ground.

Turn your key on but do not start, be sure its
on.

Now open and close the throttle and you should
see the voltage go up as you open and down as
you close the throttle.

A range from around .5 to 5 volts most only
go up to like 4.7 this is normal don't replace
it just because it does not hit 5 volts.

Is it an actual rpm serge some times these tranys
will go in and out of lock up more than they
should and than I would look at the selinod in
the trans and the line presure.

I would just replace the TPS. Mine did this as well last year. I changed the TPS in about 5 minutes. 2 screws and a plug, could not be easier.

ALthough I ordered from the dealer I have heard some got theirs at a auto parts store.

This is a common problem on Dakota's and Durango's.

I have a 2000 3.9 Club Cab, the surging I feel is definately only with the cruise on. It does it both in Over Drive and with it switched off. It is not the torque converter locking in and out because I can make it do that intentionally and the difference in RPM's with that is much greater, almost 1000. This is just an extremely annoying pulse type on off surge that is more apparent on flats than hills. I really need to get this fixed. I was wondering if it may have something to do with me having a K&N?

Any Thoughts?

Change the TPS. It is not your K&N.

I'm taking your advice. I've ordered a TPS from Auto Zone, will be here tomorrow. I'll let everyone know if it did the job.
Thanks for all the responses.

I had the exact same issues with my '98. Removed and meticulously cleaned the throttle body and all the sensors and it solved the problem as well as most of my erratic idle issues. Cleaning just the TPS initially did nothing.

I HAVE A 2000 DAKOTA SPORT 4X4 3.9 THAT HAD SURGING ABOUT 150-200 RPM AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS 40-55MPH AND 65-75MPH AND WOULD HESITATE WITH THE CRUISE ON. CHANGE THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND IT SOLVED EVERYTHING. WE LATER REMOVED THE THROTTLE BODY TO CLEAN IT PROPERLY AND SHE RUNS AND IDLES LIKE A TOP. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEBODY AS SOME OTHER DAKOTA OWNER HELP ME. THANKS EVERYONE!

I have a '98 Dakota, 318, Club Cab. I was faced with a surging problem that was diagnosed as a bad distributor rotor and wiring, then a Crankshaft Position Sensor. The surging occured both in and out of OD, with and without the A/C operating. Neither of the above repairs cured the problem. Foutunately I found this site and purchase a TPS from O'Reilly's Auto Parts.. Changed it out, retrained the controller and made a 15 mile drive with no surging evident..

Mine was doing that too. I also noticed that, by accident, that my fan clutch felt weird when I bumped it with my elbow. So I replaced it and all was fine. I would postulate that my fan clutch was faulty and was engaging and disengaging. That was a pretty rare situation tough.

I had the problem described above. My 98 Dakota with 3.9l V6 and 42RE transmission would "surge" by 150-200 RPM, but only when I was using the cruise control. It did it even worse if I took the tranny out of overdrive. It was more noticeable if the outside temperature was below 50 degrees.

A new TPS ($51 at O'Reilly Auto Parts; yes, the price has gone up that much in the last six years) took care of it. I can finally use my cruise without getting shaken up.

A heartfelt "thank you" to the people who contributed this information.
