Subject: Check Engine codes 32 & 27
IP: Logged

Message:
K, I'm stumped and asking for help.

I blew out the tranny(A500) In my '93 Dak 3.9L. I rebuilt and installed the tranny myself and 1Hr into the test drive the engine started running like $H1T and the "Check Engine" light came on. I stopped into the closest friendly Autozone and the manager showed me the 3 quick turns of the key method to count the flashes. We came up with engine codes:
12= Loss of power in last 50-100 cycles. No Problem.
15= Speed/Distance sensor circuit open. (My fault, Not connected)
32= EGR transducer Solenoid circuit open or shorted, EGR failed to respond to command. See Below.
27= Injector driver not responding correctly to injector command **PROBLEM**
14= MAP Sensor High or Low voltage. ????
31= Canister purge solenoid circuit open or shorted. ?????
24= Throttle position sensor circuit High or Low voltage. ?????
55= End of test.

I left the POS terminal off for about 30 min while we consulted with "The Book" and found the above definitions for the codes. We narrowed my problem mostly down to code #27. What the heck is an "Injector Driver"?? When I asked the man behind the counter I got the "Deer in the Headlights" Look and the computer had no references to an "Injector Driver". I've gone to 2 other shops and they are all "Mr Smartypants", then they look under the hood dumbfounded tracing the fuel system. One guy told me it was a bad injector, OK Mr Smarty pants. WHICH ONE? they are only $147.50 EACH! We tested each injector and it appears to be firing and if you feel the injector with the engine running you can feel them pulsing.

After 30 min at Autozone we went out and restarted the truck, Immediately the check engine light came on and we only had codes #12,32,27 & 55.

As far as the EGR system I haven't been impressed since the tree huggers made us use them and it's not real high on my list to repair/replace anything that sucks exhaust into my intake to re-use it.

The guy at Autozone suggested I put a couple cans of B12 in it and run it hard, I put 3 cans of B12 Chemtool in 1/2 tank of Super Unleaded Gas and an Octane Booster and ran the snot out of it until almost empty. That had marginal success, At least the guts are cleaned out but the engine still runs rough over 2,000 RPM, I have a serious power loss and sounds like I'm running on 4 Cylinders.

All of this was before I blew my Engine. We did a partial engine exchange with a '96 3.9 and I had to use my old Plenum. (diff fuel rail and connectors on the '96). But I still have the same Engine codes and the replacement was running good before the truck was totalled.

We ran a compression check and varied between Minimum 102PSI on #5 and Max 117 on #2. The engine had 193,000 miles on it. All cylinders were within 3 pounds of each other. After the Chemtool treatment it came up to 110 on #5 and 121 on #2. Which meant my valves were dirty and had carbon build up on my pistons before and I probably should have replaced the rings and redone the heads since the engine was out of the truck but a slight $$$ problem prohibited it at the moment.

It bothers me that I did transmission work but did not do anything to the engine when I started having all these problems. Now the replacement engine is running as bad as my old engine.

Any Suggestions?

Sounds like you may have pinched or broken some
wires.

Man Shank you sure run in to some intresting
problems.

Start checking things one at a time.

Check and see if you broke the crankshaft position sensor when you installed the transmission. Or it is not hooked up at all.

I wish I had a Cam so I could show you the finger, It's got a nice 1/4" wide half-moon across it, Gonna leave a nice scar and it stays numb. Maybe it won't hurt so bad next time a wrench slips and I slam it into the block. ;)

I pinched the wire that goes to the Crank Sensor but appears to still work fine, All other wires still are in good shape.

Last time I checked, My foot was the "Injector Driver" whenever it pushed the Pedal.

I haven't even begun with my Dak probs J&J, Got a couple hours? J/K. It's running but over 2,000 RPM it sounds like I lose 2 cylinders, especially w/the glasspacks.

Possibly the timing advance? But that should be computer controlled.

Holler' @ Ya laterz,

I've taken the fuel delivery into consideration. The popping sounds could be engine running too lean but the plugs do not Show a lean running engine, Pull the plugs and they show "Norml Wear" I need to check them again now that I've run it about 500 miles. The "Replacement" Engine had the Platinum +4's, I have them as back-ups now, Just not real impressed with them though.

I'm starting in the middle & werkin my way back, got a new fuel filter this afternoon, 19 Freakin Bux @ NAPA! FOR A FUEL FILTER! I really hate to ask what they want for more complex parts like a Lugnut ;)

Gonna start here, If not I have 2 Spare fuel tanks with sending units and Pumps still installed.

Don't have a Fuel pressure gauge available, the shop I do all my repairs in doesn't have 1 either.

Next shop time will be this weekend, Will update whenever I Do/Don't find the problem...

Hmmmmmmm.......

Sorry ED, I'm not familiar with that engine code. If you go to Autozone and find the Chilton Manual for engine codes (Covers All makes/models) you may be able to find it there, they usually let you thumb thru the books for free. Somewhere on this board a person posted all the Engine codes for diff years, try searching the archives.

J&J, I replaced the Fuel filter, Plugs and Wires for good measure, Reset the computer and it ran fine for about 30 sec and the dang "Check Engine" light came back on. Code #27 Again!!!

In Ref: Fuel Pressure, It bleeds off to nuttin in about 15 min. Fuel Injector bleeding off?

Where is the Check valve? Lemme guess, in the fuel pump assembly :( Grrrrrrrr.........

K, I got a spare Dak. (see parts for sale)

I changed the Computer just as a hope. NOPE!

Changed the Fuel filter/Plugs & wires/Cap & Rotor. NOPE.

Back to the shop in the morning, Gonna attempt to swap out the Fuel Pump assemblies.

I was talking to anuther Mek-a-Nic today and we came to the conclusion that hopefully the "Fuel Injector Controller" is part of the Fuel pump assembly. If this doesn't work I have 2 other plenums with injectors now.

Grrrrrrrrr....... Bypass the whole dang fuel Injection system and slap on a Holly 4 barrel! J/K

No such luck.

I got my hopes up when I saw the 5 wire plug going into the assembly!!! When I pulled the assembly out of the tank, 3 wires are for the fuel gauge, 1 hot wire for the Pump and 1 Ground wire for the whole assembly.

Next stop..... INJECTORS!

And if I ever find the engineer that designed the dang rockguard for the 4WD Dak's.. I'm going to take him faaaaar into the woods where nobody can hear his screams and beat him multiple times!

P.s. I still have many "Previously Experienced" Parts for sale.

Larry, maybe you can put this into Layman's terms. I found this link on one of the previous posts and after reading it Multiple times, I still drawing a blank....
*****
http://www.minimopar.net/fault/code27-TBI.html

Possible Causes
Bad connection or wiring - Check the wiring and connections between the fuel injector and the power module (or SMEC) and the injector contol lines between the logic module and power module. Clean and regrease any corroded connectors with dielectric grease and repair any shorts.
Injector driver transistor failure - Check the injector signal coming from the power module (or SMEC). It should rise to about 12V when the injector is off and drop close to 0V when the injector is on. If it is out of spec, you may need to replace the power module.

Diagnostic Method
Trigger Parameters
- Near 0V or near 12V not detected when the injector driver is turned on or off, respectively
*******
What/Where is the "Logic Module" and the "Power Module"?

and are they talking about checking the voltage to the injector while engine running? Just pull them 1 @ a time and check voltage changes?

they also reference the "Injector Driver" in the Diagnostic section.

Grrrrr @ Injector Drivers!

I would say you have 1 bad injector you should
not lose your presure that fast.

Yes you can pull the plugs 1 at a time and check
the pulse with a good voltmeter but I dont think
that is the problem.

Another posible cause could be the pickup in the
Dist but when you say you are losing your presure
in 15 min thats bad. It should hold it for hours.

replace those injectors.

For the other guy look for your codes here

Ummmm..... Larry, they are Dark Blue. The old one's were White over Black.

I've been told to get more "Off-The Line" performance to use the 24's, Harder hit of gas at higher pressure=better atomization. Don't I need more fuel pressure?

Larry,

I dropped off a set of heads at the local Machine/Race shop for several Drastic Mods that we normally only do to race engines.

I called Bruce this morning and ordered the set of F83E design III's

Next stop (Paycheck) is the Block and Cam before Re-Assembly. Roller Rockers can come later.

Who has the best deal on 1.7 Roller Rockers?

The only thing I noticed with my stage 2 was maybe
very little performance increase but I did get
better gas milage probable from the slight timing
advance they give you.

went from 19.5 to 20.5 same weather conditions
just added the chip.

If you want real gains get an ASE Chip its a
lot better.

I am running the 92 mopar performance computer
on my 95 now its a little better than the ASE
but don't get me wrong the ASE was a nice upgrade
over stock.

I have all 3 now with around a $1000 invested in
computers.

The mopar pcm runs my stroked motor the best no
Apexi that I used with the ASE and stocker.

I finally beat my Injector problem! Wasn't the injectors. I took the wiring harness out of the wrecked '93 and installed it on mine & it disappeared. BUT..... Don't ya just hate the But's. Now I get Code 21. Something about the O2 sensore not pulsing. grrrrrr, Well at least the dern check engine light is off. Really hoping those Injectors from Bruce will help. and I'll pull the O2 off the other throttlebody and try that next.

The Stage2 used is on sale @ dakotatrucks.com for $100. I wanted to get a second opinion before I purchased it.

I actualy liked my jet 2 it seamed to give me
a little more low end and a gain at 3000 rpm.
You will notice it on the highway more than
any where else.

Be carfull the jet chips are vehicle spacific.

Get the # and go to http://www.jetchip.com/
and be sure it is the right one for your truck.
I paid $230 for mine.

The design 2 19# injectors gave me a smother idle
and a little more mid range just smother running.

Man its 1.24 am cant sleep so I came here
