Add my 02 Quad cab to the list. At virtually 1800RPM a high frequency LOUD squeel starts and a quick rap of the gas will stop it but will reocuur regularly. Mine is a 3.9 Automatic. Turning off radio, fan etc. proves this isn't it.

I just bought an 01 R/T, and I have the EXACT same problem.
1800 - 2200 rpms, and below about -8C (15F)
Tone does not change. Constant whistle.

I have to say that I was starting to get worried and upset, and since I started hearing that noise, I have not been driving on the highway when its cold out.

Do you guys think its safe to drive with this noise? or has any damage resulted?

By the way, my idler pulley bearing was going bad, and my belt was cracking, so I replaced them, and still no change.

Hi guys I have the same noise and I found out after bringing it in 4 times that dodge is aware of the problem and doesn't have a fix yet.It supposed to be a cold weather thottle body problem.they call the dodge hot line at the dealer and this is what they put on the repair order.

Attention all whistlers. I finally got the Chrysler group to look seriously into the problem. Apparently there was a bearing problem in the altenator. Chrysler acknowledges this. Altenators now are supposed to be problem free since they have been corrected (bearings). After 3 altenators my V6 3.9 litre was replaced with a newer lot# (some time after 2003). I cannot say for sure whether this is a total cure yet since it was replaced in the spring. I guess i'll find out this coming winter.I've been told this should be the fix?. I will let everyone know the results.

My 2002 dakota 3.9 V6 has this same issue. @ speeds 65 and 75 Mph. If i go faster or slow down the noise stops. also the pitch of the noise changes. My check engine light is on I know my belt is a little burnt not too bad though. I will be replacing this. The noise that is heard in the morning when started up I think is a total different wistle. I had a intake system put in and when it was cold out it would wistle a while till the truck warmed up. I took it out for the winter and that wistle doesnt really occur too much now. This other noise though sounds like it could be either the catty or the Altenator pully bearing. I have noticed that pullys are making a sort of rattling noise now so I am leaning more towards the altenator pully. Good luck fellow dodge owners!!

Does anybody have an answer to this problem?
Have replaced the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, belt.Still does it. Have noticed that moisture in the air makes it stop.

Yep, I drive a whistler too. Owned and driven a couple years and she runs fine. Did the starting fluid spray trick around the throttle body suspecting a leak, checked down the throttle bore for the dreaded pan gasket fail. Nope. Checked hoses for leaks. Nothing. Listened at various "spinning thing" points. Nada.

I hear a high-pitch, RPM dependent, frequency that to me sounds similar to a micro vacuum leak or more electronic, like an alternator generated signal through the stereo tweeters. Yeah, the stereo's off.

So what if it's a whistle that Dogs blow that only People can hear? Just drive it and turn the stereo back on.

So you say you found the problem did you fix it or does it still do it? Mine makes the noise at 35 degrees and if it is raining or there is moisture in the air it quits. my truck is in a heated garage but when I go to work it will start to make the noise I don't think that this the problem. I could be wrong.

I have an 01 3.9 v6 dakota and i had a whistle for a couple of months about a year ago and it went away and hasn't been back since. now the only whistle i have is a result of my intake and throttle body spacer sucking plenty of cold air into the engine

Its funny, I bought my Dakota this year in Vancouver and I never noticed the whistle, but then I promptly moved to about as far north in Alberta as you can go where the avg temp is about -30C and now my truck sounds like some one is in my engine compartment blowing on a 22 shell when ever I hit 1800-1900 RPM. sadly its my cruising speed.
it is RPM dependant and quite annoying to listen to.
I'm looking for more information on this issue but I think that JohnnyB may have something with that alternator issue.
If anyone has found a cure please let us know, I don’t know how much longer till I bleed from the ears.

Everyone seems to notice this at a certain RPM range should look at your other gauges as well , not trying to be smart!ss myself having this problem like to solve it too i notice mine cold outside just as my temp.. is coming off the "C" line just before it comes to temp and other gauges showing nothing out of the ordinary my gauges have no #'s like the 2000 and earlier trucks.Did anyone ask LARRY from JJ Auto what his thoughts are on this , i know myself being a mechanic in the late 80's early 90's just as fuel injection came into the picture never heard this complaint from anyone other than a squeaky belt or water pump bearing squeal or rattle than your water pump weep hole would be dripping water pump faliure not far behind .. we figure it out soon or later ????? this is my thought like i posted earlier in my comment.
