Don't know if this may apply, buti had a whistle start up some time back. some times it would get really loud. Turns out it was a vac. leak between my tb spacer (I know ..pointless) and the manifold. A little lock tite and a good crank on the wrench...fixed.

I'll have to check out vacuums attached to the throttle body. If there is a leak at the TB it may be close enough to the firewall to sound like its inside the dash. Too dark right now I'll check in the AM. I was also thinking it could be the vacuum to the power brake booster. That line runs right along the fire wall. I won't give up until I can isolate it.

I tried to duplicate the noise again this morn but could not get the noise to occure with the truck not moving. It only did it once while driving and by the time I found a place to pull over it had stopped.

hello all-
my '01 dak quad (43,000) just started this whistle a few weeks ago. my dealer replaced the cracked serpentine belt last week while doing oil change, but they said the noise was probably caused by my window vent-shades. the noise was right back again the next day, 70 mph on the dot, so i stopped and took off the shades and the noise was still there. anyone think they have a cause nailed down yet? i agree with the poster above who wanted to be able to go to the dealer with a little better idea of what to say. thanks!!

sitting still out of gear and rev the engine to the same speed, and hold it there for a few seconds, as it runs at 70 if the whistle returns you know it's not wind on the body but in the intake, and the dealer has wind trying to go up yours.

My 00" 3.9 club cab has had the same problem for sometime. I get a intermediate high pitched squealing noise at speeds of 45-65. I brought it to the dealership and they replaced the crank shaft pulley and serpentine belt . That fixed the problem for 2000 miles, but the problem has returned. My local dealership now thinks that it is the belt tensioner.

I have that whistle too, intermittently at about 10 to 15 degrees F. Gets pretty loud at times, but stops instantly if I push in the clutch. Don't see how that could be related to the TB. It's a 2003 SXT regular cab 4x4. Any ideas? Pete

My 2001 Dakota Sport started this loud whistle or high pitched sound this past week. Has something to do with cold weather now that we are in the 20's here in Ct. Anyone come up with a reason/solution to this. Would be good to know before I bring it to the dealer.
tks

I have the same problem - '01 CC V6. When it cools down, 30F or colder, at around 65 and 75 MPH is whistles. As soon as I let off the gas or give it more gas the whistle disappears. Has new belts, K&N filter, any ideas?

I never found the source of the noise last year. It has not been cold enough yet this year for it to occure. I'll look into it if it happens this year. I'm hoping it went away since the truck is finally broken in (I bought it new in may 2003, it now has 12000 miles on it).

I have a '01 with 166,000 miles on it now. Every year when the temp dipped below 30 degrees the whistle noise came around. I had taken it to a couple of dealerships with no results. This summer I was at a dealer talking to a service mgr. about my problem knowing that the whistle would be coming back and he told me to replace the altenator. I did that this fall and have not had the problem since.

My whistle just started and I have an 03 with the V8 with 40,000 miles. This is the first winter it has gone though, as it was a southern truck when we bought it. Last night we thought we were being invaded by outer space people. The noise was so shrill that you we could hardly stand to be in the truck. The symptoms are exactly as you all have described.I have set up an appointment with the dealer. and i am printing off some of your resposes to show him. thanks for the all the help. Will let you know what my results are after the dealer does his thing. AL

I have a 2002 dakota SXTand I have to agree on the alternator
creating the whistle, Last night when I went to drive home and
heard the whistle as usual so I popped it into Neutrtal and reved
the engine up and it seems to do it at the 1800RPM mark and it
did it so I knew it had nothing to do with the transmission. at
that point I pulled into a parking lot and popped the hood and
reved the engine verry slowly up from the throttle butterfly and
heard the whistle, Infact it was so loud it hurt my ears so I
stopped it. I could clearly hear that it was coming from the
alternator putting to rest my thought of a vacum leak
somewhere. I have also scheduled a service appointment and
will keep you all posted on the results.

Cheers,
Rob

My 2002 V6 has the exact symptoms described. Loud intermittent shrill squeal between 45 and 60. Only when temp is below freezing. Stops when I push in the clutch or step on the gas.

Odd thing...My 1996 had the same problem. Sold it at 140k, never found the cause.

I might as well join in on this. My 98 5.2 has the same strange whistle but mine only happens when i'm moving. When it's idling the noise goes away. I just replaced the belt 2 months ago. I also live is a cold area (chicago) and never noticed this problem until it got below 30 or so.

Im in.

2003 Quad Cab V6 has had intermittent whistling as well. However my 98 CC V6 has never had this trouble in 120k miles. Ive noticed on the 03 that it seems to do it while accelerating but when I let off the gas it sometimes(not always) stops immediately.

Anybody take the truck in for dealer repair like previously stated yet? Results? My '01 has a Denso alternator stock, and I work for Denso so I'll try and see what I can come up with at this end.

We have a 2001 V6 Club Cab that has the same problem when travelling on the highway. When you push in the clutch the whistle goes away then starts again within minutes when you let the clutch back out.
