IP: Logged

Message:
I recently instaled a Imperial 16in fan on my 3.9 and removed the fan/ clutch assembly, well that thing keeps on getting hot now, it chills somtimes over 215 and I hate it, but If i run with the AC off its fine, Unless my t-stat is trippin im about to go back to the old set up. Im changing the t-stat tonigh, oh I also and running pro-blends 40 below crap also, stops overheating my anus.

well.... dont know what to tell ya...

i have a 180 thermostat and a 14" electric fan... stays at 180 all the time. Never run the a/c though but it should put that much drag on the motor...

well.... did you install it with a thermostatic switch or just wired it directly to a hot source? if thermo. than maybe it is set to come on at that temp

Well I still have it hooked to the fuse box, when I turn on the key, it goes on, but I was just thinking that the one time it got real hot almost 260, that might have just messed up my t-stat. Im going to change it.

Ether or, I put it in like 2 years ago, never overheated and alwyas use to stay at 180. I dont think that it is opening up on the right temp, if it was stuck closed that would be very bad. It would of overheated real quick. The hottest my ride has got was like a lil before 260. I always caught it on time.

hmmmmm.... i would just change that t-stat, use the good ol' green stuff 50/50 of course and dont add any additives. When you get the new thermostate... drill a 1/8th size whole in the side of it so the coolant will drain when cold.

Also, did you mount it flush to the rad? and if so do you have it pulling or pushing? some fans are built to be specifically a puller or pusher.

I have a 14" also but I have a 160 thermo, I dont even have any damn heat in the winter!! lol
No A/C though so I cant help you there.

Also check the CFM rating of the fan you put on, I think mine was like 2500, I could be off a little but I know it was 2 something.

OH!! DO NOT wire it to the fuse block!! your probably not getting enough amperage and you can do some serious harm (melting) to the fuse block. I did it so I know it can happen and when I went direct the fan got louder like it was turning faster.

You need to buy an automotive relay and run a hot 12 gauge or lower lead off the battery to the fan.

i bet you put the fan on the engine side of the radiator... well if you do you have to take the fan out of the shroud and flip it over so it becomes a pusher... than you have to wire it up backwards... oh my god i completely forgot about it. I will help you with it saturday!!!

Well I have it wired backeards so it is blowing air toward the motor,it keeps it real cool, but when I run the ac in the hot wether it gets to like 210, I can run the ac at night and its fine, I also put another t-stat on yesterday and the problem is still there, I dont have the fan shroud on at all, maybe that might be my problem? But I was about to go back to the good old clutch assembly because I start school mon and I will not have time to deal with it. Well I was going to try a couple of things, like out the shroud back on and put the fan mounted on the shroud this way the whole thing stays cool or I was just going to put the shroud back on.

Jesse T.

oh help is needed on the wireing, I dont like the lil buzz noise at all.

you wired it backwards but you didnt mention if you took the actual fan assembly apart and flipped the fan around inside the shroud.

Well do you mean flip the actual fan, as in take it apart and put it back together, I didnt do that. I just reversed the wires, as far as the shroud goes, I dont have it on at all.

DAMNIT JESSE!!!!!!!!! if you put the fan on the engine side of the radiator (puller) you HAVE to flip the fan! AND wire it backwards.

hehehe i think we found your problem.

those fans were made to be auxillary pusher fans... to help out with the standard fan... you have to follow all those steps to make it a puller... you probably only pulling 200cfm that way...

fazdak,
i told you so!

I think that is cool, that is how i use to have my amp, the reson it aint good for the fan is beacuse it keeps on spinning after the truck is off for a couple of seconds and acts like a dc generator, amps dont spins. So you are cool.

Ok so Im not done.

I will only say this one more time and any decent mechanic will tell you the same.

You should not hook any high amperage draw devices up directly to the interior fuse box/pannel.

You are piggybacking something that already has an ampreage draw and your new device adds to it. Just look at what the fuse is you piggybacked off of, a fan needs 30amps itself!!

I will hate to say I told you so when you fry something in your pretty little Daks and cant fix it. But I will, lol.

Just me one more time.

jesse this is what i did... i had to splice into my fuel pump wire of off the relay for my external fuel pump when i had the supercharger. All i did was just hook up my electric fan to that splice. I know which wire it is (1 out of 50 coming out of the relay box) so i will have to show you.

give me a call tonight if you can... sorry i was at work last night.
