Subject: DAD's Dakota, PLEASE help
IP: Logged

Message:
My dad's 87 dakota 3.9 4X4 will start and run fine, untill you pull up to a stop sign or a red light, if you go to stop it will stall. But it starts up and runs fine. He wanted to know what was wrong with it because were both stumped. The only way to keep it from stalling at a stop is to drive with 2 feet and keep gas slightly on. Anyone have this problem before or know what could be causing it? Please help.

Sounds like it's either starving for fuel or starving for air. check the fuel filter or injectors (if it's FI) first, then see if your intake is clogged up. One year my Formula was running fine the first day I put it back on the road and then the next day all of the sudden it ran rough and stalled at stops. I got her home and opened her up. Some critter must have nested over the winter in the air intake because there was shredded up soft bedding material all up in there where the butterly was. what a bi+ch to get out!

I will go home and look at the fule filter. The intake was already looked at and so was the TB. I also was told today at work that it might be the O2 sensor? And ideas on if thats the problem? Thanks for all the help. Ohh and i would get codes dEn94 but that takes extra money to hook it up to the computer. I'll just see what i can do on my own first.

Well i just got inside from changing the fule filter, and we restet the timing. But we think that the throdle lever is messed up. When you pull back on the stationary part it works fine and doesnt stall when you put it in gear, but then when you let it go it stalls... this thing is mess up, i just want to get it ready cause i need a truck untill mine gets fixed.

Does anyone know if the 87's have a o2 sensor? If they do i have no idea where it is.. thanks for everyones help once again.

Acually Intense, i think you just answered my question. The 87's are all 2 barrels, not FI. We tightened one of the springs that hold the throdle lever back and its working for now. Tomarrow i'm gonna go get a new spring. If it starts getting wierd again and starts to stall, i just have to drive with both feet when i go to stop. Ohhh well.. :) Thanks again Intense.

Having the same problem with my 1988 Dak. I have changed the O2 sensor and the fuel filter have ran to bottles of Fuel Injector cleaner through it and it still is stalling at stops if I dont rev it up some. Only does it after it gets warmed up though. Wish I knew how to fix it I am stumped aswell

Well, we changed the cap and rotor, changed the fuel filter, gave it some STP Carb Cleaning stuff, and re-set the timing. Then we found out that the tension spring on the throdle conection was broke, so we changed that. Now it runs nicely, but when you put it back in park after runing it, it rev's pretty high. I dont have a tack on it so i dont know how high its runing, but its pretty high. It runs good enuff to pass inspection and to get from A to B. But i would like to get it fixed. Thanks.

Around me Autozone doesn't have it. But O'Reilleys auto parts does so I get it from them. My friends and I have ran it through all types of motors. Hondas, Fords, Dodges, lawnmowers (wait, I already said honda).

Wow my 87' does the same thing. I've replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires etc. I'm going to put on a O2 senser today and check into this sea foam. I've ran some gumout through it already. I had to turn the idle up and it helped but I hate it being set so high it's hard on the tranny when you put it in gear.

JC, i know exactly what your trying to do, we've tryed all of the same things you have. The next step is to get a new Carberator. The one thats on it needs a replacing anyway.
