kwl,

I've got a 99 Dakota 4x4 Sport, V6, 4 speed automatic w/overdrive, 1800 lb load capacity, 3.92 axle ratio. I added a transmission cooler, a Jet90001 Performance (computer) module, Mac Performance direct Air intake, and a MOV5110 vortex throttle body spacer in order to get some more HP.

Without the performance upgrades, the truck has a 5,200 lb towing capacity.

I tow a 1989 24ft Shadow Cruiser 5th wheel, which has a very streamlined design and weighs 3,600 lbs empty. With water, food, clothes and other travel stuff it weighs probably 4,200 to 4,500 lbs.

I took a 3,500 mile trip this summer over the Rockies and Sierras to California and back. The long, steep inclines are slow, but the rest was just fine. I averaged 13.5 mpg.

Female needs help on towing capacity. Have a 1996 4x4 Dakota, just aquired a horse, borrowing a horse trailer that the owner bought because the previous owner's truck could not pull it. Wondering if my Dakota can handle the trailer and the weight of the horse. Have no owners manual for the truck (bought used), HELP!

Does it look like you have the tow package, with an auxillary transmission cooler if an automatic ? You'll want that cooler, and you'll want to have an electric brake contoler for the trailer installed (does the camper have the electric brake wiring ?). You'll also want more than just a bumper hitch. And if you turn the caps lock off, no one will have to ask you to STOP SHOUTING !

If anyone's still wondering, fifth wheel trailers pull great, I pull about a 5500 lb 24 1/2' trailer with my 4.7.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota v6 very basic model and I would like to know what the towing capacity is for this vehicle with a automatic transmission. I think 3 speed as you call it.

I want to buy a travel trailer and use the bumper hitch so how heavy can I go with this real basic no frills truck?

Bumper hitch is only good for 2,000 lbs max - that includes the trailer and its contents.

TO ALL:
The towing capicity of your vehicel is rated for safety. I own a dodge dakota QC 4x4, had the machanic look at it and he installed a trans cooler. I am pulling a Hybrid rated for 45oo lbs dry, 5200 max. My insurance and a local cop told me that if I were to get into an accident and the investigation were to find that my vehicle was not rated to tow the weight behind it, insurance companies DO NOT HAVE TO PAY for repairs. I am sure their are differances of opinion and some will refute it, but it actually happened. 35000, down the drain..
