Subject: Help!!! Truck won't stay running
IP: Logged

Message:
Here's what I know. My 02 Dak stalled out on me last night, and wouldn't stay running without holding in the accellerator. My first thought was the fuel pump went bad. Had it towed to POMOCO dealership, they said 1st the truck had 46lbs of fuel pressure and it couldn't be the fuel pump, and 2nd my throttle body mod was to blame, and after explaining to them the mod was done over a year ago, they said the diag computer was only reading 32 starts and they did read a faulty IAC for a brief minute. Replaced IAC with one purchased at NAPA. It still won't stay running when placed in gear, and idles really rough. I currently am running Autolites as suggested here, a home brew cold air intake with relocated air inlet sensor, V8 throttle body upgrade, 180 deg JET themostat, and an ACCEL ingnition coil. The coil was added in the past month. Truck only has 37,000 miles. The dealer also said it could be the PCM.

No. The only thing that has been changed is the IAC. The TPS is on my guess list, after the fuel pump and the pick-up coil on the distributor. Any other suggestions??

Here's my best guesses:
1. Fuel pump-because of low fuel in tank
2. Pick-up coil, fixed other dak stalling problems.
3. TPS
4. Crank sensor, also fixed other daks
5. Injectors
6. Battery??? Read it fixed stalling daks can't figure that out
7. PCM, don't really want to spend the money though.

coil prolly isnt to blame.

check to make sure that your batterie is good and putting out a good number of amps.

this will cause that problem. it happened to me.

not enough to power the computer and sensors properly.

do you have a multimeter? its about a lot cheaper to be testing sensors before replacing them.

BTW the dealer told me not to believe the codes on the odometer. He said they're not always accurate. IMO this is a scam just to pay the diag comp cost.

try filling it up and see if the helps. if not i'd checlk the TPS. spend the 20 bucks on a Haynes repair manual. if you were having trouble cranking it i would say battery. i've still got the original battery in my '00.
did you clean the TB when you replaced the IAC? you should have.

doh! i just read the part about only showing 32 starts. you could have a loose connection somewhere.

I think it's only showing 32 starts because I rest the PCM after installing the JET t-stat. The first t-stat I bought tripped a P-code for running too cool. I change the t-stat around march/april time frame.

Don't trust the dealers. They can't even diagnose the problem. I don't like it could be so and so, but I will have to charge you to find out. I had timing chain break. I replaced the valves only afew bent and several bent rods. New chain. I couldn't get to start. it sounded like timing off. Towed to dealership. They said I was off a tooth on chain but now it was running fine. I said okay. Next thing they said the oil pump was bad. Now the main bearings. I could get you a new engine the service rep said. Oh you want me to buy a new engine. These guys are idiots. 120,000 miles with over 50 oil chages on my 99 dakota. If they only last 6 years I will never buy another Dodge.

The battery does not serve any other purpose than starting the vehicle and acting as an insulator for voltage spikes. The alternator should take over powering the electronics once the engine starts. The alternator looks for voltage in the system, and varies it's output based on electrical demand. That is why, if you have loose connections, or a poorly charged battery, the alternator will run at max output, greatly reducing the life of the alternator. The battery would not be responsible for faulty or inoperative sensors.

yup, PCM got confused on mine, told the IAC to do 2 different things at once, fried it.

replaced it, started doing it again.

pulled injectors, checked map sensor, checked TPS,etc, the whole 9 yards.

replaced battery, no problems then.
