Hey everyone,
First time poster and viewer, Must say this looks like a nice site and I plan on returning quite offen, Anyways, here is my question:
My check engine light is on and I got a diagnostics test on it and here is what it said:
PO442 : Evap Leak montor medium leak detected
PO456 : Evap Leak montor small leak detected
So , I changed the Emissions Hoses and the light is still on and its been over a day when I changed them.
Anyone have any ideal what is could be ?

Did you get the code cleared? It may stay on until you get it cleared, go to Autozone, they can clear it. If it comes on again, you didnt fix the problem. Sorry, cant help anymore.

it could just be a lose or bad gas cap. You can clear the codes by disconecting the ground wire from the battery for a couple of minutes.

had this happen to me, gas cap didn't fix it. start at the front of the truck on the drivers side, at the evap canister. look over all the hoses and their connections. i found one that was cracked where it fit a little valve. cut off the damaged inch or so, repluged it to the fitting, and hasn't come back since (6+months)

My engine light went on yesterday also. I called my brother (a mechanic) and he told me that my dealer would charge 1 hr labour to read the diagnostic plus the repairs to boot. You have likely figured it out, but if your truck has the OBD2 (2nd gen on board diagnostics...my 2001 Dakota does) if you turn the key over (only so far as the radio works 3 times) Then the fault code will display. Mine was P0455 "Evaporative Emission Control System Leak." FAILURE TO TIGHTEN THE GAS CAP APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN MY PROBLEM. Once the cap was on I went for a spin to see if the light went off on its own but no such luck. Disconnected the battery leads for a couple of minutes and problem solved. From my own experience, my fixing the problem didn't get the light to shut off.

My engine light cam on alittle over a week ago and on the day i went to have it inspected. Course it failed with the dreaded code PO442, i was told buy the mech. that it's more than likely my gas cap not being tight so he reset the computer and took off the engine light and told me to drive for about 50 miles and see what happends well about 70 miles the light came back on so i went back and had it tested again and same thing plus i just used my one free re-test lol seems like a huge headache over a "small emissions leak" so...looks like i'll take RacerX advice and start looking at the evap canister and its hoses.

did the key off ,key on thing and got code po442. did un hook battery ground. light stayed off 2 days back on again. 2002 4.7dodge dakota. any other suggestions

look at the Evap canister under the drivers side floorboard in front of the fuel tank for a cracked hose. if not try changing the gas cap. when you fix the problem the pcm will reset itself after a couple of start/run/ stop cycles.

JUST BOUGHT A 2002 DODGE DAKATO AND DROVE TO WORK A COUPLE OF TIMES AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. A HOSE WAS OFF. WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND THAT HAS SAME MODEL TRUCK TO UNPLUG BATTERY CABLE FROM BATTERY AND LET SIT WITH CABLE OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN REPLACE CABLE AND THE LIGHT WILL GO OFF. THIS IS SUPPOSE TO RESET COMPUTER. DID THIS TO MY TRUCK AND IT WORKED. HOPE THIS HELPS

I have the same prb. They told me at the dealer that they smoke
tested it and was a loose gas cap. I replaced the cap and it came
back on about 60 miles later. I have looked at the hoses and cant
find any problems. Is there anythign else that could give me the
0455 code??

Got an 04 dakota 3.7. mil on solid, clears itself,off, and pending. so many lines 2 check. Gas cap maybe... I've ran of tons emissions tests the past few years, and seldom the cap will fail. You have the right to challenge if they f up on a diag. the emissions bay(recorded by dmv) has a gas cap tester... O.e.m. parts are usually the best. Aftermarket crap has mad defects.You might of got a broken part or, the wrong one.
I keep getting po456 and po158 too. Help!

you have to look at all he evap hoses..when i went to the dealer to get a tranny flush they cut all my hoses...execpt the gas ...hmmmm go figure..didnt throw a code for 3 days....when it did ...i went under the truck and saw the hoses cut...an to my suprise...i was due for an emmissions test....so they denied that they did it..and i won.. so the manager had them replaced all the hoses for free........what they wanted to do was smoke it and charge me 300 dollars...but i was smart...ill never go to the dealer for anything again ever....

True. Tecs make mistakes, but only the good ones will resolve a prob. The dealership isn't at fault. Thats why they have reps that tell u everything is ok. I work in a shop and when cars get a diag things get over priced because of potential error. When i address a vehicles needs/suggestions it is not what sales person informs the customer. Sometimes things get ignored because its a pain to do and deal with. Thats why i'm here to share Knowledge or experiences. Hey Lari, i am concerned about my light, maybe you shold worry about keepin your tires on the road. How is a vaccum leak a defect? Nobody wants to hear how bad u drive.

Have a 2004 5.9 Dakota that was rearended pretty bad and now it's running terrible. It takes 3 tries to start it everytime now and it runs like crap. Anytime I go over 2k RPM it starts to die and won't accelerate. Check engine light came on and said Evac Pressure but that's all I know. Any Ideas???

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota 4.7. The check engine light has been coming on and off for a long time. I have been over every inch of hoses. Found some cracked and replaced. I installed a new gas cap but code still comes back on after a few days. Code says very small evap leak. Engine runs great so I'm trying to live with it. The dealer says it would take a long time to find the problem and it just wasn't worth it. Any help would be so appreciated.
