Check the hoses coming off the charcoal canister on the driver's side the near the gas tank. It is two hoses. Mine were cracked and this had caused that code to come up.

I checked my gas cap last year and found the seal to be fine. Also, I checked all the hoses and found them to be good. Finally, while i was putting in some fuel injector cleaner, I noticed the gas tank neck that the gas cap seals against was misformed from years of the gas nozzle resting against the same spot. Using pliers i rounded it back out allowing the cap O ring to seal good and 300 miles later the light is still out.

P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)
Could be just the gas cap. Make sure it's on tight. You can put a little grease or vaseline on the gasket on the cap or just buy a new one.

My Dogdge 2002 Dakota has had same problem, now my
mechanic says there is a tech bulletin admitting
that computer has a bug that causes this error code
to keep recurring, so now I HAVE TO PAY to have the
updated software installed in my truck so that I can
pass the emissions test, even if though there is
really no leak! When other software I use has a bug,
it is fixed at no cost to the purchaser, don't see
why car companies get away with charging you to fix
their problem.

Diane, I think your mechanic is lazy and does not
want to find the route of the problem. I've been
on here for years and have never heard mention of
any fix for a "software bug" that keeps tripping
the CEL. Granted, depending on year and engine
there were some updates for various things.

What is the code you get when the CEL comes on?

I tell you what, if there is a tech bulletin, get
him to give you the number of the bulletin, they
are all numbered. Or ask him for a copy of it.

2002 Dakota 3.9L 4x4 auto. I have replaced plugs,
wires, cap, rotor, and coil less than a year ago.
Engine light comes on and off, scans as EVAP and
misfire cyl 2. I have checked plugs wires etc, but
also... truck "hesitates" like the transmission is
slipping from takeoff and while driving at
different speeds. I also hear a sound at times (
at low speeds usually when about to come out of
1st gear ) that sounds like a wet drum brake or
metal on metal. This truck does have over 100k,
but it was an Electric company truck and was well
maintained and the carfax report confirms it.
Please help! This is what gets me to work & back
and I use it to make a few bucks on the side
hauling stuff.

Last week my 2005 Dakota V6 started "rejecting" gas as I fueled up. The nozzle keeps sputtering and trying to back out of tank neck, I have to press down as hard as I can on the pump nozzles rubber seal over the neck and to get the gas to flow smoothly, but after 10-15 seconds does it again and again. Takes me 3 times as long just to pump 6-7 gallons. Does same thing at all gas stations. Could it be a gas cap gone bad?
