My 99 4x4 3.9L knock and pings and is a gutless little chump. If it were not for those two things I would love the truck. Any solutions. I have a K&N drop in filter and TB spacer and niether did any thing, My next move is to change out the Exaust.

If you have knocking and pinging you have serious engine damage. Knocking means bearings are shot and pinging is a timing problem and can blow holes in you pistons, which by the way is not good for compression :)

Hey JROD my 97 was making a knocking sound when I got it too so I had the cat replaced and it stopped that knock so then I took it over to my dealer (I have a protection plan through dodge)and they told me it was the timing chain which I already knew that was what it was because of all the good guys who have had the same problem on this site but they replaced the timing BELT and put on a tensor and it was all good and is running so sweet now and its been about 6 months now since then and no knocks

Hey Jrod, thats about what you get with a stock 3.9. I have a 99 as well and its guttless as hell. It used to ping and knock but after a year of battle with the dumb dodge dealer, they finally reprogrammed the computer and it no longer pings. It could also be the belly pan gasket under the intake manifold. I had that problem too. I've had just about every problem imaginable with my truck. Good luck.....you'll need it.....

I must be lucky, my 2000 3.9 5-speed has never knocked... I did get some pinging once, but that was -real- crappy gas. :0/
Not gutless either, oh -hell- no... :0D

i am going to have to say that my truck has also never knocked or pinged. but i have also put 93 octane in here since i got here.

I don't know why mine's not gutless, but not all engines are the same. Mine actually came from the factory with a TPS voltage of .83! So far all I've done to it is port the TB, install an Airaid intake, and move my IAT sensor into the Airaid tube. Oh, and the Autolite plugs. I want to put a Flowmaster, Borg & Warner cap and rotor, an Accell coil and some 9.5mm wires on it soon. Probally going to do it over my spring break. (March 30-April 7th)
Provided I have the money of course.

A standard trans. might explain why yours is peppier than others.....i wish mine had a standard.....ext. cab auto 3.9's with 3.55 rear ends are pigs.......

Yeah, I made my dealer get me a Standard. It was either a regular cab auto with tilt and cruise, or a regular cab standard without tilt and cruise. I took the standard, they drove to Ohio and got it. :0)
I've just got the 3.55 and I actually squeeked the right rear shifting into third today 0_o
Not really a squawk, more of a squeek really... surprised me. Wouldn't have heard it if I had the stereo on though. That Minivan didn't stand a chance! :0D

Actually, I'm pretty much stock. Got an Airaid intake, Autolites, a relocated IAT, and a home-ported Throttle Body (looks like crap, but works). I wanted to pull the fan, but thought better of it (lack of tools too). I might get a Flowmaster put on, I don't know.
Ok, so beating a minivan isn't great. Normally wouldn't say anything about it, but you were ragging on the V6 and I thought it'd be funny. Then you came back with how V6s get beat by minivans, so I corrected you.
Your the only one to blame for buying your truck.
I have no idea how much HP I got. 175 stock at the flywheel, I suppose I'm probally 185 or 190 now... the butt dyno liked the Throttle Body port. :0)

Mine: 3.9 auto, ext cab, 4X2, 3.55's
Want to do mods but keep having to spend money on repairs of the stuff that is always breaking on these "benchmarks of quality".... :C\

give me a break that engine ruined my life. Its crap.
my QR25DE puts out the same amoutn of hp when its in a spec v or an altima.
ok truck to truck u say
nissans 3.5 V6 in both cars and trucks 245-287hp
and their 4.5 V8 315 to 340hp(cuz .6 liters=140hp)

Yes, the 3.9 is crap. I'd love to unload mine bu the trade in value on a 4x2 V-6 Dakota is awfull so i can't afford to right now. Meanwhile, the battle continues to get it to run right. But nothing ever works. They just run crappy.........lol.....i like that ...."it ruined my life".....my truck sure has caused some headaches and stress for me as well.

yah actually i have had lots of cars. i have had an iroc camaro, a 2001 eclipse, i have a corvette and a z71 off road. the truck is not ment for speed its a truck not a car if u want speed and get up and go u buy a car.

the 3.9 is an antiquated engine.
look what the hemi did to the 5.9...its time to let go...stop being so partial to your own truck and just admit that its a horrible engine...and then come race my I4

i think that maybe if they at least went with a 4 cam setup like on the tacoma v6, we would all be much happier with the 3.9. my friend has a tacoma with a 3.4l v6 stock and it produces around 220 ponies. its kinda sad really

well first of all like i said its not a car and its not ment for racing. second its simple if u dont like it dont buy one or get rid of it and shut up about it.and the tacoma is only 190hp and the magnum puts out 5 more pounds of torq. and as much as i love chevy the s-10 is a peice of crap. new front end on that at 60,000 miles and engin at 80,000.but like is said if u dont like it get over it and leave then
