Subject: On Jacks AGAIN!

Message:
Yep that's right my truck is dead again...

I went wheeling to break in the new lift and it looks like my truck mis-understood when I said BREAK in... Anyway it turns out that there is a hole in my transfer case right where the front drive shaft comes out. Not actually in the transfer case but in the steel sleeve where it all joins. I'll get pictures once I get it rotated around but basically I can stick my finger in my Transfer Case.. TIP : DON"T EVER DO THAT!! you can't wash the grease off even w/ Pro 409 & Lava soap.

Anyway I'll be taking my truck to the corner to wash it up and then drive it up the street about 2 miles to the Dodge dealer .. and HOPE!!! that they cover it. I know the service guy and he's helping out the club in D/FW a little bit by sending people to us. Hopefully they'll cover it.

BTW! for all of you that think my truck either has a black cat living under the hood or is possessed my girl friend has hired a exorcist to come out and sprinkle holy water all over my truck.

I haven't installed the Add-a-Leafs yet.. I think I'll go down to 4wheel parts and do it in there parking lot ;-) just incase.

Same with the Rancho 9000's if I can afford them after I get my transfer case fixed. If I have to pay for that.. I'm starting a HELP KNOBBY GET HIS TRUCK FIXED FOR GOOD FUND! ;-) paypal @ knobbyman@yahoo.com .. Eh... one of these days it'll be fixed right? I mean what ELSE could POSSIBLY go wrong?

So what "caused" the hole in your transfer case? Hit something off-roading or caused by the lift? Just wondering...

I really doubt if it was caused by me hitting something because

1. The hole is directly above the frame cross-member.

2. The hole is going from the inside out. Like.. If I were to hit something then the hole would be pushed in.. This is pushed out.

3. I was driving on level ground when it happend. No bumps or mud or anything maybe going like 10 mph... MAYBE probably more like 5.

I'll be taking it to the dealer on Monday.

Seriously though, Knobby, did you have to get the front d-shaft lengthened when you did the lift? Also did the lift rotate the angle of your front pinion to align it with the trans case? I haven't looked real close but is there a slip joint on the front d-shaft? Man, you've been through hell with this crap, hope they get you rollin' again soon.

Knobby,
On the 5.5 Tuff Country lift I had , they don`t include (or recommend) a longer front driveshaft or anything to lower the transfercase. That was one thing I never had any issues with with that lift , so that leads me to believe your lift SHOULDN`T be the cause of your most recent problem. That will be up to the dealer to decide though :( .

Good luck.

The problem with taking your truck to the dealer, have them decline to fix it under warranty... then take it to a 'buddy' dealer is that you are in the system. If you haven't already taken your truck in, I would suggest taking it to the 'right' dealer first.

:-\ ShoooooooooooooooooooT!!!!! wish I read this post earlier this morning. I took my truck to my dealer.. they said $300 for the part then labor is ontop of that.

I'm going to take my truck back by the off-road shop and see if they can come up with a new design for it. I need to change from the CV-Joint because it can't handle the angle as well as a U-Joint could (if designed correctly).

Dunno, K-man, you might be better off just taking it to a good driveshaft shop. They should be able to fab up a custom front shaft with double cardan joints for the severe angles in your application. Unless your 4-wheel guy does d-shaft fabbing at his shop. Cut out the middleman & save some $, it's up to you.

Knobby,

you know that in order for the dealer to deny coverage they have to prove that the modification caused the malfunction. If something blew out of your transfer case then it might not have been from the lift it "might" have been a faulty part. Plus they have to prove this in writing. But I'm surprised they only wanted 300 to fix the transfer case!?!?! when I got hit before I totaled my truck the plastic valence that hangs under the front bumper I know is worth $450 all by it's little bity self and it's nothign more then an injection molded piece of plastic.

just my 2 cents

cadetdak,

Actually, all the dealer has to do is say "no"! They don't have to prove crap. Once they say "no", it is up to you to get the manufacturer involved or take them to court.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Knobbyman gets this all fixed OK.

But, you guys sometimes forget who is in charge. It most certaintly is NOT you! This is why I tell people to ask the manufacturer about aftermarket parts voiding the warranty.... and NOT to believe the aftermarket part manufacturer. When push comes to shove, it will be on YOUR shoulders to get the warranty work done.

Remember... all the dealer has to say is "no, we wont fix it under warranty." Until you take them to court, the dealer doesn't have to do crap!

They don't have to do anything true.. But by law they are required to prove it in writing if you ask for it.

I knew this was because of the lift because I've taking my truck off-road before and it never happened.. No more then 5 minutes into it w/ this lift on and.. *POP!* there it goes. I was just hopeing that it would be covered eventhough I knew it wouldn't be.

BTW it wasn't the Transfercase it was just the CV joint. Also I don't pay what the dealer says on ANYTHING.

I'm taking my truck into the off-road shop for it's checkup today.. I'm going to have them look at the drive shaft.. See what they think and then I'm going to take it to a drive shaft place and see what they think.....

Wish me GOOD LUCK!! I need all that I can get. :)

that's not entirely true. I dealt with this with my 97 dakota before I totaled it. I had torn out the axles (read: broke into many pieces) and they said no to it being fixed under warrenty. Well i took the dealer to court on the matter and was told by the judge that they have to provide it in writing and because they didn't he ruled in my favor.

Robert, it might not be easy true, but, Your warranty can only be voided, if the dealer can prove that the modifications you have made to your truck are the direct cause of whatever problem you are in for. For example, If my water pump goes on my engine, they cant refuse to honor the warranty to fix it becauseI have a body lift unless they can prove that my adding a body lift directly caused the problem.

People,

I'm not saying the dealer wont ultimately have to fix your vehicle. I'm simply stating that if a dealer wants to be a prick, it will be up to YOU to make them do it. They wont just roll over and say "your right, the law say such and such."

cadetdak, you PROVED my point. You HAD to take them to court to get your issue resolved. How many people have the time and money to do this? I certainly have the money, but not the time. BTW, did you get your court costs refunded? Plus, if you have to do this every time you have an issue with your dealer, it gets old real fast.

All I was trying to do was be the devil's advocate. Just because K&N says their filters and/or FIPK does NOT void the warranty, doesn't mean that a dealer can blame it on a problem. (This was just an example.) And I tell ya what, no matter what K&N says, they will not take your dealer to court for YOU!
