Subject: Why raise a 2wd??
IP: Logged

Message:
What is the point of putting a lift on a 2wd dak with the crappy 3.55 slip-a-lot rearend.... i mean, i have been offroading all my drivinge life... and my dak is the sorriest offroad vehicle that i have ever owned. unless you have 4wd, i would definately not suggest wasting your money on building an offroad dak.

People lower 2-wheel drive trucks to make them look more "appealing." (or better handling, but that's a different story).

If all you're after is a show truck, why pay the extra money for the 4 wheel drive if you're never going to use it? Just go buy a 2-wheel drive truck, raise it up, throw some beefy tires on it, and you got yourself a "monster truck" in the eyes of 98% of the people out there.

I'll be honest, I love my 01 4x4 SLT. I will probably never take it off-road. The only reason I got a 4wd is because we get a decent amount of snow here in PA. I could have easily bought a 2wd, raised it and thrown some big tires and wheels on it and had a truck that was more "appealing" to the general public than mine is now for about the price I paid for mine.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I have seen and known more than a few folks who could do a LOT of off roading with a properly set up 2wd. 3/4 of a trucks ability off road comes from ground clearance, larger tires for flotation and traction, a good limited slip or locking rear diff, and a good motor. Daks have all that and then some. Even a 2wd. Granted you cant go everywhere a 4wd can but you can go lots of places that a stock 2wd cant. They are also lots of fun around town.

Don't forget the driver! ;-)

I'm lifting my 2wd QC Dak (w/33's) and I have owned BOTH Jeeps and trucks of many types. I can tell you IMO that A LOT of where a vehicle can go deals with driver skill. I agree with Hawkeye 100% with the rest!!

I personaly decided on my 2wd QC because of cost. I realize in snow 4wd would be a must for daily driving, but I live in Phoenix, AZ (100 degree's now!) so a lifted 2wd works just fine for me and where I off-road. Also the extra ground clearance (when lifted) WILL help, along with the obvious reason that they look GREAT lifted! Hehe.

Yeah your right, Driver is 75% to 80% of the overall factor. I was just speaking from a trucks position. Like I said, know more than 1 guy that can take a 2wd a LOT of places.

Why not?!?

I had the Fabtech 3" Suspension lift, 2" Body Lift, 32" BFG A/T's, and 4.10:1 gears. Ran REALLY nice, caught decent air (and handled it too), and went just about anywhere a 4WD went (proved that as well).

Unfortunately, out came the lift and in came the Hotchkis 2/3 drop. What a difference! :)

bernd, why is it unfortunat that your truck handles better? or are you just kissing up to the lifted guys because you changed sides? hehehe ;-) Just Kidding. a dak that is raised, dropped, or stock, still looks better than any other truck on the road!

The redneck in me still thinks it was sweet up in the air but I guess the new setup is a bit better at the track.

BigPuss,

I just want to lift the front of mine to get the rake out of it. I run 31x10.50x15's on it and the ONLY time I ever hit the fenders is when I cross a nasty Railroad crossing or hit the pothole from hell. I live here in Florida and do take mine out from time to time in the woods at our paintball field here and I would like to have a li'l bit of extra clearence too.

For some of us its a looks thing, for others its a $$ thing. Not everyone can afford the full suspension lift at what.....$800 or so?

the nice thing about a 2wd is that you can lift it little bits at a time while with a 4x4 you have to get the full kit at once.
even when I had my 4 wheel drive broncos I never really needed my 4 wheel drive. I never really offroad that much besides playing in some mud and my locker and mudterrains are doing just fine for me.

In sand I do tend to dig the back end in though. lol

Is it possible to go from a lowered to a raised dak?
Right now my truck is lowered with a 3 inch drop
springs up front and dropped hangers in the rear for a 4
inch drop. The front is probably not a big deal, but the
rear, since I replaced the original hangers with the
lowering hangers is there anything I can do like maybe
get some new leafs to get the lift I want. Also whats the
biggest tire for a raised 2wd without the body lift

I chose to lift my 01 2x4 dak b/c it was cheaper than a 4x4 and I live in south jersey so not much snow. My current estimate is around 4k add that onto the price I paid and it's still cheaper than a 4x4. I haven't updated my yahoo site lately but heres some pics

Hey Jason, I don't know about not much snow in south Jersey. We got plenty of it in Ocean County this year. You must be WAY SOUTH. But my 4x2 Dak did just fine. I have Daystar coil spacers in front and fabtech aal's in back...now I just need some 31's.

The install was pretty easy. Took about 2 and a half hours. We did it without a spring compressor, having one would have made it a lot easier.
