First of all, where are you from? Is that how you talk or can you just not spell worth a damn? I bought a '92 3.9 auto with over 160,000 miles on it a couple years ago. It had never had any major work done on it and I had it for a year and still no major work. I traded it off and never had any problems. I ran it like hell too. Click on the Speedtweaks link or go to www.speedtweaks.net. They have almost everything available for the Magnum V6. If you have any questions you can email me at cbsdakota@aol.com. I check my email every day and will respond immediately. Alot of guys on here seem to be too busy to get back to you right away. Just let me know. Congrats on trading in the rice burner on a real ride.

Think your first line of your reply was harsh enough , cbsdakota? The dude comes on here with a legitimate question , and the first thing you do is slam him? I wonder if your that cocky in person? If my first question here was answered like that I would not have come back.

Uh...yeah...that was a little bit harsh.

As for the 120K on a '99 model...wow, previous owner must have loved driving it. I only have 53K on my '97.

A few things to check:

(1) Belly Pan gasket
(2) Timing Chain (no belt) and tensioner
(3) Compression Check on all cylinders (should be within 5-10% of each other)
(4) Vacuum reading at idle (should be about 16-18")
(5) Give it a general tune-up with Plugs, Cap, Rotor, Wires, and a fresh air filter. (Unless this was already done by the place you purchased it from)

The last item you can do is contact CarFax for a report on the truck. http://www.carfax.com (Have credit card ready and the VIN number of the truck)

I've got 132K miles on my '98 and the only thing I have had to do was change the water pump. It is alot of miles, but if the previous owner took good care of it, you should be cool. BTW, there is not a timing belt, but a timing chain, so you should be OK there.

I rolled 158000 on my '94 yesterday. She is still going strong. The biggest problems I've had were the A/C evaporator leaking and the ball joints wearing out. Other than that she is dependable as hell.

Those must be almost all highway miles... like Bernd said, someone drove the truck a lot!

I've onlt got 27,000 on my 2000 3.9L, but so far not even a hint at upcoming trouble. And to be honest, I'm not exactly a 'granny' driver. :0)

With that many miles in that year, you've got an interesting problem. Usually when a vehicle gets over 100,000 miles they are also pushing 6-10 years old. At 6-10 years you've not only got parts breaking down from use, but rubber and plastic components breaking down from age.

As long as the oil changes and routine maintance were kept up, I don't think there will be a lot of trouble. You might want to check the belts and the like, and I don't think a major tuneup (cap, rotor, wires, plugs, belt, oil, filter, aircleaner, coolant flush, tranny tuneup, rear-end fluid replacement, full grease job) would be a bad idea.

Curious, how much did it cost you?

Sounds like a great deal jpmaker! Ball joints are a common problem, but mine went at 70,000 kms. Maybe if you are real lucky, they were already done. My timing chain went at 50,000 kms.

It depends on how the vechile was cared for!!! 120,000 miles on some vechiles is just getting warmed up while others are starting to nickle and dime you to death. If the proper maintence has been done you should be ok! I know two brothers with 300,000 on their two V6 Daks. One burns as much oil as gas while the other one does not burn any oil. The one that does not burn any oil was bought new and well cared for. The one that burns oil was bought used off an area farmer that put 150,000 hard miles on it before my co-worker bought it.THe realy amazeing thing is that they booth have their origanal a/trans.

There's an old guy that works at the place where I got my bumper painted... he brought the truck to me and lovingly ran his hand down the side as he handed me the keys. He had had one with well over 300,000 on it, and passed it on to his son who drove it for 3 years before trading it in. Said it was the best dåmn truck he ever had.

Had a '90 Dakota 3.9 5sp ,it had over 260,000 miles when I sold it. I still see it from time to time 4yrs latter.I beat on that truck all the time , most of the shifts were at red line.I did a timing chain and water pump at 200,000 when the water pump started to leak a bit. Other than that I changed the oil every 4,000 miles.

A long story short:

'92 Dakota 140,000 miles. Bought with 99,000 miles.

Distributor rotors kept snapping. A rattling noise up front turned out to be a loose timing chain. Repaired sleeve bearing for new rotor shaft, replaced timing chain and gear set... Still rattles up front, and seems a little sluggish.

Can't figure out why...Looking into a non-chain option (gears only?)

I just sold my '95 Dak 3.9 with 130,000 miles on it. I towed a travel trailer from Alabama to Texas, Alabama to Ontario Canada, and Alabama to Florida with the truck and it never gave me any trouble. The only reason I sold it (and got an '03 Quad) was the "funny" noise coming from the back seat: " don't touch me..., my legs hurt..., move your legs...". Now all I hear is "nice...", and "wow!" as I hit the gas (got the 4.7 this time).
