Subject: 3.9 4.7 5.2 What to get?
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking at a used 97-02 dak 4x4 ext cab 5spd. I know its not going to compete with my 27 hwy mpg in my grand prix but what engine should i look for? I hear the 4.7 does not do that much worse than the 3.9. I do drive a crap load of miles though and the mileage thing could get to be a pain with the a$$ with gas prices all over the place. I found a 4.7 to go check out this weekend, i was looking for a 6 really but if the price is right and its not that hard on gas maybe i'll go 8. So whats your opinion? I'm sure someone has debated this before.

thanks,
Dan

I do not know how much gas each really eats, i do know that the v6 5-speed MPG is rated at 15/21 and 4.7l is i think 14/16. So on the streets no, but on the freeway you will probably notice a difference

whhhow, 14/16 i hope its better than that. would i be safe to figure 20 crusin at 70 or so going easy on the right foot? I wont be hauling a whole lot in terms of weight just me and some lighter but large stuff. I also dont tend to use the ac unless its really hot out and where i'm from that doesnt happen all that much. Also if it doesnt have a soft bed cover thats getting purchased the day i get the truck.
Thanks again

I have the 3.9 now. It does what I want. But if I were to be buying again and buying now, I would look for the 4.7. They have additional power for pulling a load (boat) and can be modified for more power fairly easily. Mileage would probably be about the same. Good luck on finding one you like.

Dan, do you really need the 4x4?

If so, go for it. If not, the 2wd, 5spd w/LSD goes well also. And gets MUCH better MPG!

I don't really go 4 wheeling, but my heavy Quad cab, with the wider tires form the tire and handling pack, and 5spd manual, LSd rear end, goes great in sand, deep or otherwise. I drive on beaches alot sailing and racing my Nacra 6.0 catamaran. The LSD REALLY helps!

the 3.9 is rated at 18 and the 4.7 at 20 in the 2wds just for a ballpark figure (hwy), so the 4.7 will get better than the v6 just b/c of technology.
Youll be pissed off later if you get a 3.9, I promise. I drove a delivery truck for a print shop with a 3.9 and my nissan 4 banger was faster and better built... That 3.9 only had like 70k on it too and it was just plain sorry..

I dunno 'bout all you guys, but my v6 doesn't get that bad of mileage. Well, on the highway at least. I just drove to florida from illinois in my 99 rc 2wd v6, without cruise control, and I got like 25-27 mpg. That was using 93 octane the whole way. but in town i only get like 14-17 tops. But I still really wish i had gotten a v8.
So definitely go for a v8. you'll like it more down the road.

I did mostly highway with some rough city driving over last weekend and checked the mpg myself(not using the digital overhead)and it was right around 17 which wasnt bad considering some driving was very city in Boston. First, the mileage that's printed on the window sticker was measured under the most unreproducable conditions on earth. Those numbers are just about meaningless and almost impossible to duplicate. Read the fine print where it says "your mileage may vary." You'll never even come close in real world use.

Second, mileage is totally dependant on driving style. I doubt many of the 4.7 drivers that are claiming over 20mpg highway are being honest. You are not ever going to get better than the sticker because those numbers are impossible for normal drivers to attain, especially the 4.7. It's just way too much fun.

And lunchboxV6...I'm sorry my friend your claim is bu11sh1t. I have a V6 CC Auto and I drive it like a nun going to church and if I get 22 highway I'm lucky. There's no way you got anywhere near 27mpg driving from Illinois to Florida, unless you drove downhill with a tailwind all the way.

I had a 97 5.2 4WD and if I got 19mpg highway I was lucky. City was 12mpg. Also, using a gasoline with an octane rating higher than what the engine was designed to use is a waste of money and kills mileage.

B/S Flag

If the 3.9 gets better mileage than the 4.7 why is it advertised as 2 mpg worse? It has to work harder and is less efficient....

I can go anywhere from 320 to 375 miles before my fuel light comes on. depending on how I drive. So you guys "come on now". My gmc with a 305 gets better mileage than what you people claim to get. But hey, whatever. If I told I was putting 2 hemis in my dak, you guys would be like " woah, you gotta post some pics and time slips. f#ckin' awsome!" But don't let me say my v6 gets good mileage, I'm full of sh!t from a bull.

Why in hell would anyone want to lie about it. ONly reason I could think of was if they were trying to sell you their truck-mines not for sale.

I've gotten slightly better than the sticker, most of the time. I don't have the computer estimator, I do the math. It wasn't off a cliff either!

By the way LunchboxV6, according to my calculator the best mileage you get is about 23, and I think my calculator is readin a little better than yours.

Not flamin, but are your tires stock?

Mine throw my speedo off by 8 mph, so my mileage and distance are off too, just a thought.

Here's my input on the math. I'll estimate 340 miles until my light comes on. that's about my average. I have a 16 gal tank. 340/13=26.15
not 375/16=23.43 You forget I still have about three gallons left. What good would a fuel light be if it only came on when you're out of gas?

The ONLY way to take a mpg reading is to fill the tank all the way, run "x" amount of miles, than fill the tank up all the way again.... Take the miles you went and divide by the gallons to top off tank = MPG.

I have a 99 V6 cc auto 2wd 3.55's with a ton of motor and suspension mods, 255/55/17 R/T wheels and tires with the ECU reflashed by the dealer so my speedo is right on the money.

I have a 13 mile straight stretch of So Cal freeway that I have to take to get to the next "big" city. I drive 65-72.5 mph (limit is 70mph) and the best I have ever gotten,is 22.8, EVER! And that was to Vegas, all freeway, no stop and go.

My truck is lowered 2/3 and I have a snugtop toneau cover (both less drag) and when I'm not in conservation mode I consistantly get 17.5-18.5.

22 gallon tank: 340 miles,19 gallons of fuel is a typical fill up cycle.

My '02 QC 4.7 2WD, 3.92 LSD, Auto gets 13 mpg PERIOD - city or towing on the hwy @ 70 mph.
It's never reached the "magical" 14 city the EPA claims... and nuns are PASSING me! Trust me, I baby the thing keeping it under 2,500 rpms and 13 mpg is it :(

I'd love to know how Dodge got that 14/19 rating on the sticker - I just assume the EPA was driving with two sparks pulled out! My truck was recently at the dealer for it's 12K service and I got the flash upgrade to fix the low idle/stumble issue and they claimed the mileage "should" improve. HA! So far both problems remain, but I've run one tank of gas since then... still got my fingers crossed.

BTW I track my mileage very closely because I do alot of towing with my 16 foot skiff (fishing boat) - 400 miles a week on average.

Bottom line: the 4.7 is a newer, lighter, "better" engine than the 3.9 - so in theory it should get V6 mileage with V8 power. The 5.2 is big, heavy beast - it sucks gas (like any V8) but has some serious torque to pull heavy loads.
So it depends on what you plan to do with truck - but I'd avoid the 3.9 as it has almost no upside especially given the weight of the mid-sized Dak.

I hate to burst any bubbles of those new buyers who want to purchase a 4.7 and think they are goin g to get anywhere near 20MPG.

Sorry, not going to happen. Even the dealer will tell you that if you ask them.

When we bought our truck (2003 3.9L V6 CC) we were thinking of getting the 4.7. Even the guy selling us the 3.9 said that they were averaging around 12MPG on the 4.7V8. So we got the 3.9, we don't need to tow any boats or haul a ton of dirt or anything so it just made more sense for us.

Do I wish we had the v8? Hell yes! If I could trade it straight across right now for the V8 and pay only the difference for the cost of the motor, I would do it in a heart beat but that's just me and wanting more power. :)

There is alot of bullsh*t on this board, filter through it and you'll be fine. ;)

Man, I guess I got a different 4.7 5 spd Dak C/C sport than what that dealer sells, cuz with a light foot I DO GET 20+ MPG, so stop saying s hit like you absolutely know what you're talking about just cuz some guy told you at the dealership.

I've talked to so many "guys at the dealerships" that don't know s hit about the real facts, all they know is their salesperson training.

Now as far as all 4.7 Daks averaging 12 mpg collectively, I've personally burned a tank at no better than that haulin a$$.

But, I did still get 13 mpg towing a light (14 by 7) RV.

Dont believe everything you hear.
If the company posts 20 mpg on the 4.7 it's not a lie, it's just hard to get.

This is a message forum where MOST of the folks are modding their truck to GO FASTER, and that means MORE GAS, so the 12 mpg avg. is feasible given that the 4.7 is a LOT of fun to drive, especially with a LOT of goodies helpin it out.

I myself dont spin the tires every time I take off, but I do get on it a lot. I still avg about 18. HMM
