LMAO So, your getting 20° at WOT too. Thanks CW! When I get a chance I'll post the spark curve I pulled off of a stock '01 4.7 California truck.

CW,

Do you also get 20 degrees at WOT on 1st and 2nd or is it just 3rd?

Eyetrip, are you running a supercharger? MY r/t started acting up, then eventually started to just cut all spark in boost. I found out my crane cams hi6r ignition went out on me nd really screwed things up.

I tested in third gear because I can't get traction in first, can't read it fast enouph in second, and 4th is to fast to be taking your eyes off the road. It will be the same in all other gears.

EyeTrip, I had simular problems with my 93,94 5.2L daks and my 98R/T. All three ran slower when I installed the Mopar PCM. The reason for this is detonation! There is a sensor on the engine that detects detonation. The Mopar Performance PCM advances the timing further at WOT than the stock one does and this causes more detonation. As soon as detonation is detected the PCM backs the timing off (hence the 20deg WOT). The only way to fix this is to swap cams. The stock cam has almost no overlap. This causes the chamber pressure to sky-rocket when the RPM's start hitting around 4K. That in tern causes detonation. Then if you are running the M1 manifold your are compounding your problems. Now you have an intake system that needs to be turning 3k plus and a combustion/valve train that performs best from 1-4K. You just narrowed your functional powerband to 3-4K. Couple that up with severe detonation due to high chamber pressures and you have essentually shut the engine down. You won't hear the detonation. The det-sensor detects the slightest amount of detenation before it becomes audible and it keeps backing off on the timing untill the detonation stops. I ended up putting my stock PCM's back on all 3 of these trucks and my ET's improved. I never got to install the cam to test my theory, but my best friend did and he knocked a full second of his ET by installing a MAGNUM PERFORMANCE cam shaft and 1.6:1 rockers, M1, Air Raid,Blueprinted injectors, and the PCM. He later installed the headers and a cat back. Then he put in a Paxton and larger injectors. He has a 94 RC 5.2L 5spd that runs 13.2. He plans to put a set of R/T heads on with the next larger cam from MAGNUM. We're hoping for upper 12's. Traction is the biggest problem we are having and fuel pumps.

R/TBlues,

I was under the impression that Dodge did not put a knock sensor in the Dakota.? If it is true that Dodge did put a sensor, then that's good since it is preventing a bad thing.

Secondly, how come many folks still detonate if they have this sensor? I know quite a few R/T owners that installed an ignition system (MSD digital6 or Crane) with timing retard features because they had detonation at WOT. I realize most of the R/Ts were usually running a supercharger or some laughing gas, but why would they need an after market system if the trucks came equipped with this detonation sensor??

Third, why did Dodge have a TSB to retard timing for trucks with detonation if the trucks have a detonation sensor? Wouldn't the sensor retard timing for the many people who unfortunately fell victim to the TSB?

Thanks for the info, I'm going to check some other sources and post anything I find.

Eli

If I might make a suggestion... Engine isn’t everything. You might try putting a different rear end… I forget what the RT’s have, something like a 390? Try a 360. If your getting high torque at low RPM try a quicker rear and a heavier flywheel. Those 5.9's are nice but they don’t spin up as fast as a 5.2. You have to use the advantage of torque and engine momentum.

Also consider your burn out and traction bars. If you spend too long sitting at the starting gate spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere all your doing is wasting time. You can try putting the car in gear at idle speeds instead of at 4K like you usually do when you burn out, and use the engine torque instead of RPMs to pull you off the line. I had to do that with my Trans Am… I dropped form 13.4 to 12.9 just by using engine torque and shortening my burnout.

Also take a look at a cheap set if rims and slap a pair of slicks on em… Put a block of wood in your rear leaf suspension to keep it from squatting too much, or change your leaves to springs to se a HUGE difference in tear off times.

Remember, little 4cyl Hondas and Toyotas run good quarter miles, and its not because they have a faster engine. I guarantee they don’t. Its because of weight (your in a truck, cant do much about that one) rear end, and suspension.

GEEZUS H. KRIST

THE DODGE R/T DOES NOT HAVE A KNOCK SENSOR.

any detonation when normally aspirated is due to the beer barrel intake belly pan gasket being blown 99% of the time...or bad gas...or lean condition possibly by a bad m1 install(vacumn leak).

THE MOPAR PCM DOES NOT BACK OFF TIMING WHEN DETONATION EXISTS.

if it did..it would be the ultimate pcm for a supercharger.

Dude, there is no way an R/T will ever hook up with a block of wood between the axle and the frame. You are so full of sh!t. The reason the R/T has such a difficult time hooking up in the first place is because the suspension is too stiff. To make matters worse, they put low profile tires on the thing. Weight must transfer to the rear wheels in order to plant the rear tires so they can "hook up". By placing a block of wood between the frame and the rear axle you force all the weight to remain on the front tires and you will never hook up.
