Subject: jet chip thoughts?

Message:
i have a 97' dakota with the 5.2L. The only mods i have done yet is dual exhaust and a functional ram-air hood feeding a k&N FIPK. i was looking at computer chips, what would be the best thing for me to get a jet chip or something different. any help would be great. thanks.

from reading so many posts on this subject this is what ive learned
for 3.9 works great
for 4.7 they suck
for 5.2 not really any difference
for 5.9 not really any difference
some people might have other things to say
personally i dont think it would be worth the 3 hundred somethin dollars for one, mine works great on my 3.9 (with 94 oct.) but your best investment would be a throttle body

If you really want a computer go with Mopar Performance, or a custom flash. I believe Bernd has other programmable devices as well. The Jet plug in is nothing more than a paper weight.

One of the problems with the Jet Chip is that the stock PCM will start "crippling" its values to get them back into spec. Hence, you'll pay just under $300 for some performance gains that your computer will eventually "bleed" out.

As RTJohn said, by a Mopar Performacne PCM!!

(Now if Mopar would just hook up the 2K Dakota 4x4's with a MP PCM...sheesh)

Yall say go for it,jet chips, on the 3.9s. Is that new ones, GenI ans IIs or what. My 3.9 has the typical K&N, ignition, headers, flowmasters, etc. But is 300 bucks worth the time and efort? Or does MP make a good chip or someone else worth while? Thanks
Joe E.
Why would the Jet Chips work on 3.9s but not on 4.7 5.2 5.9s?

i spent 300 for my chip in early 2001, b4 i knew of speedtweaks and the iat adjuster, so if the iat does the same thing dont spend 300 on the chip, and yes i have a gen3 3.9 2wd with a few mods. i couldnt tell ya why the chips work good for some motors and not others. but when i take my chip of it seems like it doesnt rev out and hard as it does when its on, but its not like the wonder chip or anything (25 hp my a$$) i kinda regret getting it.

I have a 5.9 R/T with a Jet stage 2 chip. I didnt really feel any gains. I have a G-Tech and am going to see what the difference is with it on & off. I`ll post my results as soon as I can.

I`ve heard a lot of negative about Jet also. Go with the Mopar PCM

I am currently borrowing a JET module from a friend of mine, I have been useing it now for about 4 days, and I can notice a tiny gain in throttle response but most of all I have seen a gain in gas millage. I don't know what stage it is but I have been running it with regular gas and there is no sign of pinging of anything.

I have a mopar performance engine controller and it is the only way to go. I noticed immediate results. It is a true "plug and play" chip.
From what I've read and heard all the rest can not match the mopar engine controllers for the dakotas. They run about 350 bucks straight from mopar but I've seen them up to $600 and as low as $200.

MOPAR PCM's are better than Jetchips - IF YOU CAN GET THEM. Unfortunately, for 2000 and up 4x4's and all 2001 and up trucks you can't get them. The only option is a custom flash from someplace like ASE, Kenne Bell, BG Chrysler, KRC Performance.

I've run Stage I and Stage II Jetchips on my Ram with a 360. The Stage I didn't do much but the Stage II did. I noticed a big difference at WOT. And when I removed it, the truck definitely didn't have the same balls.

Yet again, another conflicting answer on the Jet Chip.
Is it possible to get one from Summit and try it out. If it works, keep it, and if not, semd it back?

Here , I found this. A dyno with Jet chip and without. At the top of that page it says 5.7 R/T , must be a typo. But you can see the difference. If you ask me , still call it a " paperweight "

I have a Jet stage 2 on my R/T along with a few other goodies. I didn`t notice much difference. Like I said in my previous post , I`m gonna G-Tech pro with and with out the chip and see. I`ll post results as soon as I can.

I have the jet stage 2 and i can till a big difference, I have the 4.7 the trick is do not change the exhaust from stock on a 4.7 or you will lose power, just change to a 180 stat and a free flow intake.

bottom line

there is a chance that it will do nothing, or make it slower.

even if it does work, the gains aren't worth the price

Just got back from the dragstrip. I took out the Jet stage 2 chip and got .47 faster !!!
I have:

99 RC R/T
Mopar headers ( jet-hot)
Quick D TB
Gibson 3" single cat-back
Mopar 7.5 mm wires
Mopar cold air intake w/ heat shield K&N filter
Tonneau cover
Jet stage 2 chip

Ran on the stock tires.
Hooked up good.
They didn`t have a timeslip for me because they said there is something wrong with their computer but my buddy video taped me.

All mods with Jet - 15.48 @ 87.9 .... 60`- 2.3
All mods no Jet - 15.01 @ 92.33 .... 60`- ???

Maybe got a tenth ot two better because I hooked up good but , the taking out the chip DEFINITELY MADE A DIFFERENCE !

There has been a LOT of debates about the Jet Chip, but the majority of the Durango Owners Club seems to have nailed it...the PCM starts crippling the values it sends out because the values it gets back are out of spec.

Makes me glad that the 4x2 MP PCM works in a 4x4!

Good post, Lynn!! This is FAQ-worthy!

I have a 2002 quad cab 4x4 with the 4.7, automatic trans, 3;92 gears, Flowmaster 50 series, 180 T stat, K&N drop in, Jet stage II and I have to say I love it,it made a big difference in the transmission shift points, and accelerates better, seems to be quicker off the line also, I dont give a Rats ass about 1/4 mile times in a 4x4, it was worth the 250.00 for me, because of the improved shifting and faster acceleration. I dont believe the remark about the PCM will cripple, If it does oh well, I will buy a new PCM or maybe the Mopar one will be out soon. Also I have driven for 60 days with the stage II and then removed for a day, it was to see how the truck performed, it Sucked. so I reinstalled the stage II and it works Awsome.

How does JET Performance Power Tuning change the way my engine performs?
JET Performance tuning replaces stock computer tuning inside the vehicle computer to give maximum power and torque. The tuning can be delivered in the form of a chip that replaces the stock computer chip, a chip that piggy-backs the stock computer chip, a chip that plugs into the back of the stock computer, or a module that intercepts and modifies the signals from the stock computer with JET Performance Power Tuning. The type of computer in your vehicle dictates the type of device needed. The tuning information is stored in the computer chip which controls all of the engine's characteristics like air/fuel ratio, spark advance, shift firmness, shift points, top speed, rev limit, and axle ratio. Sensors monitor many engine and transmission parameters like RPM, manifold air pressure, mass air flow, coolant temperature, intake air temperature and many more. These sensors send this information to the computer. The computer uses this information delivered from the sensors along with the information stored on the chip to deliver the optimum air/fuel ratio, spark timing, shift firmness, etc. for this set of operating conditions at that instant in time. JET Performance can tune a vehicle for the conditions by using a dynamometer to measure horsepower output while altering the information stored on the chip. This is how JET Performance maximizes your vehicle's power output!
