Subject: MODS for increased MPG
IP: Logged

Message:
Any one know any MODS that I could do to get better MPG? I was thinking about getting mods or better hp and torque, but if there is something that does both that would be great. (with out having to get high octane gas). Thanks!

I have a 2000 CC with the 4.7L and I run 87 octane gas. If I changed to a higher octane would I see any improvements in MPG or HP?

If it was intended to run on 87 and you get no ping then stay with the 87. I have heard that some peopel get better gas milage with 87 than with 93.

Get a k&n induction. It will give you more horsepower and torque plus a lot better gas milage.

Exhaust and air intake usually give both power and mileage.

My goals in fixing up my truck is to have more power and better gas mileage. I would go with all these:

-Better flowing intake (K&N,Airaid,etc.)
-Better flowing muffler (Flowmaster and Dynomax are the best)
-An electric fan (I've seen 3-4mpg increase on V8 Dakotas)

These would be a great way to start, along as you can keep from driving it like you'll stole it (to feel the extra power)you should see a defenant increase in MPG's. Did I miss anything Bernd, because I know you'll read this sometime!

dont some models of vehicles run better with a certain amount of back pressure.....if i remember right the valarie had that issue. i have a 99 1500 and would like to increase my mpg. thought about the tubonator, k & n filter, and for the exhaust im not sure.......i do agree with kris on the electric fan, i have not done it on my 99 but on my 73 , oh boy did it make a big difference.

Unless your engine has a carburetor or throttle-body injection, that turbonator will just be a waste of money.

It is my understanding that the dual exhaust does not help mileage and only slightly helps performance. This information comes from a racing and exhaust shop in Bakersfield, CA. with an extensive history of wins. My exhaust buddy tells me that the 4.7 exhaust is very well designed and I'd be better off sticking with it for no more HP increase one would get from that mod. (I know I'll catch hell for that statement) However, he did tell me a free flow muffler design would be a big plus. But hey, the Cat Back dual exhaust sounds so good!!!. The one mod he did tell me to install was a K&N air filter system. I think it's pretty well known that it takes more fuel to make more power. I think that is physics 101.

Again I know there is a grip of push by most on this site to go with the dual exhaust and high performance muffler set up but if it's a mileage issue then I'd like to see proof that those mods really increase mileage.

Is there any real data on mileage with dual exhaust vs. stock exhaust?

Is there any real data on the K&N system and how it affects mileage?

Yes it does take more fuel to make more power but that is totally different than freeing up power.

With breathing mods such as air intake and exhaust, you are not "making" more power, you are "freeing" up power. And with freeing up that power, you are making the engine more efficient which in turn improves the miles per gallon.

Versus,

"Making" more power which would be to add a forced induction system like a turbo, supercharger or a nitrous system.

you know a good way to help with mileage is to get a vacuum gauge installed and try to drive with it averaging at the highest vacuum reading possible. way back when, they used to offer a setup like this from the factory as a "Fuel Mileage" gage option in some GM vehicles.

Steve-
I have the same truck you do, with auto tranny, 3.55 LSD, and 30" tires. I get close to 25mpg highway, 17 city. Only mods are V8 throttle body, modified airbox (NOT CAI) with stock paper filter, and 180 T-stat. Synthetics in engine and rear end, hard lid, platinum plugs, and tires inflated to the maximum pressure (C load range 50psi).

After you install the vacuum gage have some fun and draft a semi. You'll surprised at how much difference you see on the gage. Careful though, some drivers don't like it and might want to see how you look on their rear bumper.

if you dont have a vacuum gauge, just drive like you have a raw egg between your foot and the accelerator pedal. try not to break the egg. this method will increase mileage.

I had one in my Jeep pickup. Yes it's more of a novelty because it won't change the driving habits of most people. It has some usefulness in tuning.

I already had a Flowmaster 70 with 2 1/2" duals cat-back on my '01 4.7, and changed the highly restrictive factory y-pipe (1 1/2" dual into 2 1/2") for a Magnaflow version, and a 3" hi-flow converter, and picked up a solid 1 mpg city/hwy. Amsoil synthetic rear end fluid gains about 1/2 mpg. Vacuum guages are useless if your vehicle has a vacuum booster canister that alters the readings.
