Subject: catalytic converter on 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
Does the 2001 4.7 have 3 cats, or are there 2
cats and then a resonator? If it has 2 cats and
a resonator, could I remove the resonator to
increase the sound without affecting my
emissions? I live in california, so it would be
nice to be able to pass smog.

Thanx

It is a cat under there. I just cut mine out today. Not to rub your face in it but the sound increase is great I love the sound. That alone is well worth the $85.00 CDN to get it removed. The higher RPM HP increase is well worth it as well. My truck had a pretty bad flat spot right at about 5000rpm and you might as well switch gears because power is falling fast. Now though it pulls all the way to 5500 no flat spot at all very good upper RPM HP increase. Just what I was looking for. I kept the old cat around just incase they come up with emmissions testing around here.

CW, you removed the 3rd cat right and put in a straight pipe to Flowmaster? Was it louder with more resonation or just sounded better cuz I don't want the resonation in my head on the highway. I have Flowmaster stainless catback too and have been thinkin about doin it but have hesitated without someone elses experimentation since I have did enough lately:)

Mine is very quiet on the highway must be the extra speed beacuse at about 30-40MPH and still in third gear it is a little annoying but I just shift to forth. It deepened the sound alot, she growls pretty good. May see if I can get a sound file going but I have a pretty poor mic and lap top sitting in the corner. I will see if it even works.

Are you running that little cat box? or did you just tie the o2 sensor around the frame. I'm wondering I would like the extra sound like you got but I don't want to deal with any fault codes. I was told my truck would set codes and not run very good if i cut it off.

Hey CW sure sounds as cocky as helll with out that third cat and a straight pipe hey.

It does reverberate loudly on the 1st to 2nd gear shift at high RPM but overall it's mean. I love sound of sheer horror screaming down that tail pipe. I had a guy beside me that has seen the truck around shake his head in approval going up a hill. I dropped the pedal for him and tore up the hill like I was going down. Do you have any steep hills in your area? That's where you really roast the low tourquers badly.

The beauty of it is that there is no O2 sensor behind the third cat only the ones in the Y-pipe.

so wouldnt that make it a resonator, not a
catalytic converter? I always thought O2
sensors were attached to the cats...beats the
hell out of me, I'm just itchin to yank that thing
out of there now! You guys are a bad
influence.

I wasn't sure either if that 3rd thing was a converter or not, because normally like "D" said there are O2 sensors in front of and behind converters. Anyway, mine has to come off, as my Kenny Brown X brace won't fit with that thing there. And, KB neglected to mention that fact, since they obviously didn't test fit the brace first. Hopefully I can convince a muffler shop that it is a resonator.

I am. I don't have a digital camera ot I would take a picture. I looked this morning when I went to work it is a convertor. I can see the honey comb design in there.

I'll save a little bandwidth by using this old post. It's amazing to me how many combinations Diamler-Chrysler has come up with for catalytic converters in the short life of the 4.7 engine. One cat in 2000. Three cats and four O2 sensors in 2001. One cat in 2002. I'm not sure about 2003. The 2004 Dak I looked under at the dealer today (hassle-free 4th of July!) had a large cat after each exhaust manifold, followed by O2 sensors. A Dodge tech that I have known for 20 years told me that we will see more rear-drive cars from D-C in the future. One of the main reasons is the placement of the converters closer to the engine for lower emissions results. Because of this, the typical front-wheel drive with have way too high underhood temperatures for drivetrain reliability. I still can get over those huge heaters so far upstream on the '04 4.7's!

Not all 2000s came with one cat; many came with three. Are you saying they put bigger cats in '04s ?

My 2003 4.7L has only one large cat right after the Y pipe with an O2 sensor in front and back. If there is no O2 sensor than its not a cat.

Sorry, but that's just not true. My '00 has three cats; and there is no sensor by the third cat. Don't believe me ? Reread the thread and you'll see the Dodge tech says the same thing about his '01, set up the same way.

I'll second kowalski's statement - my '01 4.7 has three CATS - O2 sensors are only around the front two. The third has nothing,,,but it is a CAT.

It depends on where you are as well. If I'm correct, Cali's got really strict pollution laws, so they have 3 cats. I'm in PA, my 2000 4.7L only got the 1 cat.
