The converters after the exhaust manifolds on the 2004 4.7 I looked under were about 4" diameter and 5" long each, WAY bigger than the "pre-cats" on a 2001. The 2001's were rated 235 hp. Aren't the 2004's 230 hp?

I went to www.dodge.com to answer my own question. The 2004 4.7 is 235hp/295tq. The 2005 4.7 will be 230hp/290tq and "3 to 4 percent more fuel efficient". So...the next Dak is heavier, less power, and more fuel efficient? Sounds like negative gain to me. A 15hp mod on an older 4.7 will give you better than the 2005 optional HO 250hp/300tq, especially since you will pick up over 5 lb/lbs tq by modding an old 4.7.

so what's the consensus, do the 04 models have a larger y-pipe and precats, if so, can we 02 guys swap for a hp gain?

I have removed my third CAT on my '02 Dakota and The Dodge House still honors my warranty 100%. It still passes Colorado Emissions tests with flying colors, and Colorado has the same specs for it's test as California, it just will not pass the visual test that California does.

No fool like an old fool. That's a federal crime, punishable by a $2,500 fine.

01Motorsport -they've probably used the same precats on any of the 4.7s that have them. I don't think the ones on the '01s were any smaller than the ones on my '00; and the size you describe would not be way bigger than the cats on my '00.
Bob Lincoln - sometimes I wonder why you would even check out the performance board - are you such a goody two shoes you never speed either ? That too is punishable by fines, what is your interest in performance ?

Performance doesn't necessarily mean speeding. Any POS can break the speed limit. I'm interested in seeing what people do to tweak a little more power and gas mileage out of their vehicles. You don't have to make them illegal to do that. And it's a big myth that removing the catcon results in a noticeable gain.

3/10ths in the 1/4 mile is a good myth. Since that is what I picked up after removing the 3rd cat and new 'Y' pipe. Maybe I should try some 'Ricer Stickers' Next since that Myth turned out so well. Oh, and thanks for the info about being illigal with fines. I never woulda known that.

Hey old fool if you can get the dealership to still honor your warrenty, more power to ya.

I gained a few tenths myself by getting rid of the third cat and making a custom Y pipe.
