OH MY GOD!!!!! The WRX is sick fast! I have been reading about them a lot, and everyone said they were quick, even the nondriving magazines managed to get 14.2's out of them! A close friend here at work just bought a silver WRX, sedan, 5spd today. We just went for a Hell ride, well, hands down, its quicker than my truck. I'd be willing to bet money I could turn a 13.9 with it, STOCK, on street tires. This thing is so awesome!

Dak owners beware (at least most of us) do not mess with the WRX's (insert and "good driver") because they are very fast!!

14.7 ????? This thing would run 14.7 after missing 2 gears !! My truck will run 14.4's all day, and I can tell you, after riding in it, I don't have anything for it. I think Motor Trend ran a 14.2 with it, and typically those guys cant drive, these are same guys who ran 16's in an RT dakota??????? I gaurantee this WRX will run under 14 with the right driver.

I agree SwampDak, just goes to show you that a turbo'd 4cyl is capable of a lot of HP. And this car weighs about 3100 lbs, not that light for a compact vehicle, considering my truck weighs 3600 lbs !!
I'm typically not an import guy, but I do give credit when it is due, and this WRX is a screamer, and it's going to really surprise some V-8 powered vehicles!

It's a sooby and I've always think they feel a little chinsy if you know what I mean, but damn is that thing quick and can be A LOT quicker. It is an awesome car for the money you pay! I really liked it, too bad they wont let me drive it, lol.

I've seen many tests as well in the low 14's to 14 flat on a car with minimal break in. It takes a set of balls to rev it and dump the clutch, (which most magazine tests don't do) but grassroots motorsports did it with theirs and got the good low 14.1 Car and driver tested it side by side to a audi S4 and the WRX beat it as well. My brother has one and I like them as well, but I still like my R/T more (espically considering I spent $8000 less. He was saving up for a used S4 but after seeing the WRX for less then even the most beat up, used S4's he put his deposit down a month before they were loaded on the ships. If the 275 HP STi comes to the US it will be big bucks, or it will be greatly watered down compared to it's Japaniese counterpart STi. Another thing, not only are the WRX's fast straight line, that is not their strong point. You should see them autocross. Now if they only autocrossed on dirt, nothing else stock would even have a prayer. It looks like a WRX driver has won the world rally championship as well, although the French car won the manufactures title, any you thought the WRX was ulgy!

The friends of mine drove that WRX around the first snowing when everyone was rushing to get their snow tyres and sand bags...while they were all sliding around (including me), my friends drove just fine almost like they had snow tyres. Thtey then had them put on when the tyre place wasn't flooded with people and it handles even BETTER! Gaww...definatly a Montana car, eh Hersbird?

I can't believe that there is going to be yet ANOTHER model with more horses coming to the us..*drool*

Subaru has always built a fairly solid vehicle overall, albeit sometimes quirky (SVX, Brat, etc). The older models were somewhat cheap in their feel, but you could never kill their flat-4 engines. In any case, you can't beat a turbo, just ask all the Diamond Star owners. If the new WRX didn't look so funky, I might think about trading my Neon R/T in on one. One weird looking car for another I suppose. The real sleeper would be the wagon version.

I heard the WRX engine is based off the H-4 boxter engine. 227hp@14.7psi

I had a Volvo with a 1.9L LPT(low pressure Turbo pushing 14.7psi (chip). Maybe 200-210hp. Never Dynoed it. Not worth it, no LSD for Auto's so I got horrible burn outs around 3000+rpm and major torque steer (Front Wheel Drive). (USA) Only can get an AUTO.

Europe had the 1.9L HPT 200+ 5-speed. Chip made it 220-230hp 0-60 5.9 1/4 14

I love Turbo's! I wish my 5.9L had a Turbo. MMmm Twin Turbo.

xplikt- My brother did put Atric Alpines on his WRX from Tirerack. His is also an automatic model which has a better vaiable AWD system then the manual WRX gets. Its more like the outback VDC without the active suspension stuff. His is pretty much awesome handling in any condition imagable. The 5-speed would be better for all out acceleration from a dead stop, but with a good powerbrake his car is pretty much already to the limits of the stock tires traction. One thing about the WRX is it does really start to notice things like passengers, AC, and really hot days. My Dakota is only affected by the heat, but not to the extreme my brothers WRX is.

Honda should try strapping a turbo on that S2000, then maybe they'd have something! Actually that is awesome to make 240 hp from a normall aspirated 2.0L, too bad it doesn't make any torque. I bet if you were to drop that motor in a Dakota it would be slower then snot where the WRX motor would still move it nicely. No matter how you look at it, it is a good time to be alagain. It looks like the factory is engaging in horespower wars again, there are a bunch of new cars coming out with pretty sweet motors. None of them really compare to the WRX with it's AWD and mid to low $20,000 price tag.

The WRX from what I've seen, is 0-60 in 5.4 and the 1/4 in 14.2. This compares to an LT-1 F-body that does 0-60 in 5.7 and the 1/4 in 13.7 (same source).

The WRX would be an excellent match for a Syclone. A moderately modded 4.7 or lightly modded R/T could take it in the quarter, but not to 60. A heavily modded dak could take it, however the WRX could also be modded.

In a race I will give the WRX a win, but they run 6-7 kilobucks more than what I paid for my Dak, based on dealer invoice prices from KBB.com (I could buy a blower for $4k :)

Yea but the WRX body Sytle need to change! The US WRX seem to be near it's limit on performance. For another 4k to 8K will give you low 13's maybe with dumping the clutch. Now how long do you think that 4-wheel drive system is going to hold doing that? Good old American Muscle still wins. F-Body's can do 13's stock. My Co-worker has a 99 Firebird that does low to mid 12's all day long for about 4k all motor. He's rear end is going :) HEHE Too much power! Did I mention it's an AUTO!

cobb tuning makes a kit for the WRX for about 4k or so that gets you 12.7 you could probably get there cheaper, because cobb is expencive.

a 13 sec subie will SMOKE a 12 sec F-body in the twistis

Have you guys heard of the new 'launch' option on the M3's. Something about a small lever or switch that when depressed, will slightly disengage the tranny, set itself to the optimal rpm for the fastest off-the-line performance. My buddy next door at Microsoft is trading his '96 M3 in for the new one. Supposed to be one of the fastest production cars available and is said to be way ahead of the M5.
Feature sounds kinda cool.

im sure the BMW has a automatic and is sophisticated, but I can do the same thing in my TRUCK, and if i got the M5, i could do the same thing because they only come in a 6speed

In response to the handling of WRX vs. Dakota, around my area the limit to a car's cornering speed is usually limited to visibility around corners. My Dakota can handle far better than the sane speed around most turns (and that is far beyond the safe speed). If I get a car that can corner better, it won't get me to my destination any quicker or be more fun to drive, however if I get one that gets upto speed quicker it's a different story :)

Eric,
Settle down chieftain, the 'you are wrong' bit was sarcasm. Hence the friggin' smiley face.

As to the remainder of your response, the 'launch' feature is computer driven and has the capability to not damage any components. As I'm sure you already know, a computer is faster than you or I on a clutch....even a 6-speed on an M5. So in actuality it's not the same thing. Put this feature in your truck and go side-by-side with the same truck with a standard 5-speed and you'll have one winner and one loser...no matter how fast the driver with the manual is.

So get a grip. I was just tryin' to be friendly. Sh!t, you have a lot of people telling you that you're wrong all of the time or somethin'? Try to have a happy holidays.

i heard the M3's will have a shifting set up like the ferrari 360 F1. you know, its a manual shifter with no clutch. the only differance is, the bimmer will have a normal stick lever while the ferrari's is on the steering wheel.

depending on how fast and far down you press the gas, the computer will dump the clutch at a higher rpm.

is that what you are talking about?

I was at NewEnglandDragway this fall to see the "4 cylinder street cars". There were several WRXs there. They were respectable competetors especially because of the great off-the-line traction. There were also dual-turbo, rotary-engined, mazdas and other really cool-looking cars. (mostly riceburners)

The URL below takes some time to download before viewing but it was one of the fastest runs of the day. It is a Front Wheel Drive, AMERICAN MADE car with NO nitrus.... be prepared to be surprized at what kind of car it is. (I am told that it is one of the quickest in the country of its type.)

Bruce P., i'm on dial-up with a weak-a$$ connection so i'm not even gonna try to download that movie but i'm guessing that's Gary Donovan's 1985 Reliant. as far as i know it's the fastest K-Car in the world, running 10.4 second 1/4 miles qith 132mph traps. also, how were the RX7's(twin turbo Rotar2 rotary mazda's) allowed to run in the 4cyl class? they're considered, by mazda, to be 1.8l engines, but even Wenkel himself said that a rotary engines displacement should be doubled...which puts those engines quite a bit above most 4cyl's specs, and they're usually classified w/ the other japanese super cars that all run 3.0l 6cyls.

conig, you mentioned the fact that the WRX pulls somewhat dissapointing 1/4MI times compared to it's 0-60 times. this is due to the powerloss through the AWD driveline. on average RWD loses about 15-18% of it's power through the driveline. FWD is slightly higher. AWD typically has about a 25-30% loss of power through the driveline.
