Subject: 4.7 mods?
IP: Logged

Message:
reading through tons of topics and replys on 4.7 performance i see lots of, "headers do nothin", "chips arent worth it" blah blah ect ect.

so what are the best 4.7 mods to get some performance? i dont need a hot rod, my truck is a 4x4 lol, i just want a little more power. im about to put on a thrush glasspack muffler, is that really going to make me lose power??? im thinkin a superchip and intake is it worth it? are headers worth a damn on my engine? plzzz help

Do the cams. There is no other mod that comes close without going extreme. Cams only take 4-5 hrs to do the 1st time and after you know what your doing you could do them in 3.

Gears is not a bad mod either but it is going to cost you for that 4x4.

I havent done exhaust yet but I hear that your gonna loose power until your motor is making some serious power. At that point the exhaust will have too much back pressure and opening it up will make more power.

That advice was pretty good. Bang for the buck, cams, then cams, or you could go with some cams.

Try e-bay for an affordable pair of HO cams.

They have over doubled from the factory since I did mine in 2002, for $53 a cam new.

Do you really want the obnoxious noise of a glaspack?

Any CAI will get you very little, not a good bang for the buck for aftermarket hype.

2001 QC, SLT, 4.7, manual tranny, trailer towing, tire and handling, yadda, yadda.....

You know Summit Racing has some headers for 225.00, they are Flo Tech from Holly. I am going to buy them. Not a bad price, plus cold air intake and 3" cat back, I should notice some increase. I also was told that if you increase air flow, the O2 sensor will sense a leaner mixture and tell the computer to give more fuel. To a point no need for bigger injectors. Any one know about that?

You might gain some but all 3 are not gonna do as much as a 206 or 212 cam from KRC.
Im sure that the intake and headers would do alot more if you had a bigger cam too.

To me 4.7 intake and exhaust are designed a little bit bigger than they need to be with the stock setup. But if you get the engine to move more air "via aggresive camshaft" then the next obvious step would be to open up the intake and exhaust.

Why most people see minor results from cat-back mods to a 4.7 exhaust system is the bottleneck from the factory y-pipe, which narrows to only 1 1/2" each bank at the intersection of the "Y". A Magnaflow mandrel-bend y-pipe solves that. A cheap homebrew mod is the removal of the "torque step" from the mouth of the throttle body, a "true" 68mm airflow. A Dremel tool and some fine sandpaper sheets are all that's needed. K&N drop-in, Bosch 4418 plugs, synthetic fluids; ditto HO cams!

Gear, if you get your cams from www.buymopar.com (HO CAMS) and send them yourself to Crane Cams, you can save a lot of money, just might take some time. The guys at Crane will grind both down for 298.00. Give them a call. 389-258-6174
Thats who does them for KRC. So at most you may have 600.00 in the set up. Crane said go to KRC web page and pull the stats of the cams from there and they have it already in there computers for the grind and everything. you have to tell Crane what you wants though.

The superchips programmer made a big difference on my 2003 4.7 auto. As long as your truck is a 2003 or older it will work. Gears are expensive, but i love my 4.10's and auburn limited slip. Go 4.56's if you are going to be running larger than factory tires.

On the 4.7 with the electronic auto tranny, the SuperChips makes a noticable difference right away.

The tranny will bark the tires occasionally and the rev limiter is moved up to about 7k so you never have to worry about hitting it before you shift :)

I am doing mine in the next month or two. 150,000 on the stock rear. Starting to howl and hum pretty good. For a shop to do it, the labor is going to be around 500-800. Then the LSD or Locker is another 300-500. Plus ring and pinion front and rear. Looking upwards of 2000 all said and done. Having a shop do all the work.

I just bought some Mopar H.O. cams last week on eBay. $149 (+16 shipping) for both cams, the install wedge and sprocket tools. You just have too look for a long time and be lucky to find them. It can be done!

What's your left foot doing?

The new Dakotas are fairly heavy. Your 4.7 will respond well to to different cams and/or lower gearing for a good start.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
