Subject: leaf blower for a blower?
IP: Logged

Message:
i'm thinking of making a leaf blower into a homed supercharger. i have heard it wont do much but a think i could make 20hp out of it. people say it wont compress the air there for it wont work. i dont see how much different this would be to a s/c other than only having to pay $50-$75.

please enlighten.

i did that with a blower fan off a hot watertank on my 89 4 banger mustang. it only helped on the bottom end up top it sucked more than the thing could blow. the leafblower idea is a little better but i wouldnt try it on a v8. and anotherthing is it gonna be a gas or electric leaf blower. the electic opes pull alot of juice and a gas one would sound like as$

electric with a switch to turn it off and on, when i fell like blowing the doors of a Chevy i might turn it on. i was going to get one that blowers between 180mph to 230mph.i wonder how much boost that would be with 230mph leaf blower motor. my friend put that on a Chevy forum and they said i was a stupid POS and should be slapped. they hadn't try it so what do they know.

screw the leaf blower idea. here's the hot ticket.

1. get yourself the Binford model 2005A industrial stength hair dryer. the wife used it and it blew her hair clean off. from here on out, the blow dryer will now be known as "the blower".

2. take the blower and add radio shacks 1 megaohm resistor across the motor armature.

3. disconnect the heater element of the blower. hot air going into magnum motors is bad! leave the unused element in the blower. it will act like an "Air-raid" helix carb spacer. that is good!

4. get a 3 inch diameter "Y" pipe connector from home depot and duct tape the exit of the blower into the Y pipe. make sure the blower is pointing toward the air filter, not the throttle body. i know, you think i have it backwards. i dont, TRUST ME! IMPORTANT: make sure both the Y pipe and duct tape are made by Binford. anything else will fail.

5. now wire the blower directly to the battery. no need for a switch. yes i know that the blower will be running continiously, even when the engine is turned off. this is ok. TRUST ME! and yes i know the blower is rated at 220 volts AC and you're going to power it with 12 volts DC. you dont want to utilze the "full boost" potential of the 220 volt hook up. hence only 12 volts.

6. now call all your buddies over for the debut. take them all for a ride so they can feel the newly unleashed power. to think you did this mod all by yourself for under $50.

i did this mod myself. i seem to have lost the before and after pics in truck fire. keep a fire extinguisher nearby. just make sure its made by Binford. TRUST ME!!

I think I'll risk getting bashed for raining on your parade again, but this is only slightly dumber than the electric superchargers being sold on eBay. I think I originated the idea about a year ago when we had a long discussion on the e-chargers. I never thought someone would actually take it seriously.

Btw, I still have my 50 mile long extention cord if you decide to go electric.

Now, N56629..dont bash the leaf blower thing..it actually will add some power. One day at vocational we decided to put some kids Z24 cavalier on the dyno since we had nothing to do. Well that Z24 made 93HP at the wheels. Then we got really bored and took off the intake tube and ductaped a 2HP electric leaf blower up to it just for some sh*ts and giggles. Well we plugged that 120 volts right into the wall and turned that baby full blast. We then ran the car on the dyno with the leaf blower running. It made 112 HP at the wheels. I was impressed. Now there are some people on here that would see my post and go out and put on of these on there car. They are just retarted and cant see satire well at all. We plugged our leaf blower into the wall. Not into the battery. There is no way it could be efficient on the road. Plus when we had the thing on it bulged up the intake pipe and it was about to explode.

thanks for your comments and the fact that you did make power on the dyno is a added plus. i will most likly still try this mod no one said that you were smart for trying it. but how is
sh!t invented any way. and when i responed with the a$$ dyno scared of the dramatic increase in power you will be asking how i did it. :-0

The electric super charger is possible. But for V8s sucking down more than 700 cfms it would take a very highpowered motor to just keep up with it. But for all of you disbelievers wait and see what they do with these new hybrids and batteries. Look at the stupid little prius. They have 274 Volt batteries. Now tell me that cant make a electric motor haul. Batteries are becoming more powerfull and much cheaper i dont think it will be long before an electric supercharger becomes an alternative. They would also be way more adjustable than superchargers and turbos that we have now.

I going methane injected. By going on a steady diet of beans I've built up a good reserve of gas. Now I just have figure out how much hose I need to run from my a$$ to the intake manifold.

Hey, Smokey Yunick made a living out of "backyard engineering". I had a 1985 Dodge minivan with a wimpy 100HP 2.2 2bbl 4-cyl. Even with a 5-speed manual, it was slug. I had the old air cleaner top lying around since I bought a chrome one. I had disconnected the smog air pump that ran off separate belt pulley earlier, to take some load off the engine. One day, I got a brainstorm to hook the pump back up, but this time ran a heater hose into a hole drilled through the original air cleaner top, directly over the carburetor. I plumbed in a 318 valve cover breather as a minimal "filter" at the base of the air pump. Well, as a supercharger, it "sorta" worked. I had to increase the base idle to compensate for the load of the pump again, and the difference was nil until about 3500 rpm, then you felt a minor surge. Curiously, the device helped the minivan go from 23 previously to 27 mpg highway. Even though it worked well, I was paranoid about the lack of air filtering, and went back to the stock system. But not long after that, I bought a 1992 5.2 Dak RC, which totally satisfied my starvation for horsepower...

Any meathod of increasing air flow into the engine will increase HP as long as you can also supply the needed fuel. Whether or not the added power would be beneficial is a question that you will answer after you've made the install.

Keep a few things in mind while designing your system:

1: make sure that when the blower is off that it does not restrict the flow of air. Otherwise you will loose power when its not on. And that definately is not good.

2: Pay attention to strain that you will be putting on your battery and alternator. You may need to upgrade either or both. Or add a second battery.

3: Don't make changes that you can't change back. If for whatever reason you want to get rid of it, you don't want to have to spend alot on replacement parts that were scrapped in the install.
