Well I installed Superchips today. I have to say that overall I am impressed. It shifts HARD now! And I wrapped it out to 6500rpms without hitting the limiter. The truck seems to grab rpms a little faster now, but the power gain wasnt hugely noticeable. I still have to try the performance setting when I change to 91 octane next tank.

I am a little disappointed that my truck has no low end grunt. I can stab it off the line and it won't even come close to breaking loose. I even tried to power-brake and NOTHING! It just sat there and made noise! It has to be the 3.55's with LSD. I NEED GEARS!

I am thinking about going with 4.37's or 4.56's. I know everyone talks about 4.10's but once you throw on larger tires you are right back where you started. My mustang has 4.10's with a 27" tall tire and it seems to work well. I plan on eventually running 32's on the Dak so i figure 4.37 would give it a little more grunt down low.

I dont know why your truck wont spin the tires. I had the 3:55's and posi and I could spin them. ANy way. If you do any highway driveing I would really think twice about gearing lower than 4:10's. At 70 Im turning a needles width over 2000 rpm. At 80 Im almost 2500. The 4:10's really seem a perfect match with the 32" tires.

My FIRST question is, what is the altitude where you are located???

If you are say 5000+ feet. You wont be burning the tires too easily.

I'm here in Phoenix where it's probably under 1000 feet.

I went out today on some deserted roads to test my launch in prepare for the track tonight. Which got cancelled due to monsoon :(

Anyway. If I hold my brake and bring the RPM's up to stall speed then hit it, my truck don't even move. It FRIES my right rear tire silly!
I found it to be better to just ease the throttle and then go.

Here's a video from today. I just punch it and it spins for a bit then goes.

Same truck as yours with 3.55's open diff.

http://www.paysonarizona.net/Home%20Videos/DakotaVids/Dak_SuperchipsTest_IntakeChange.rm

I DID find out today where the speed limiter is. It's around 6500 to 6600 and instead of the longer drops like the stock rev limter does, it seems to cycle off and on very quickly.
It's not near as an abrupt limiter as the factory one, but it's there.

Check out the video. It DOES spin the tires. And I'm heavy with my truck box with tools, ATV riding gear, and a prety good size Deep Cycle battery back there. I wonder what I could do if I took my truck box out? But that's too much work.

Got other videos on my web. Click on my signature.

I'm lucky I only drive 2 miles to work, so I rarely hit the highway. When I do, I usually drive about 70-75mph.

Chrisb4x4: Is your truck a manual or auto?

My truck is automatic and is absolutely gutless down low. I am only running 245/70/16 tires, which are around 30" tall and it won't spin them at all, even power-braked. I am completely at a loss as to why not. The truck seems to have plenty of power under acceleration. It seems like I need more torque down low. I don't want to supercharge my work truck so I guess for now I just have settle with some lower gears.

Hey there... I just changed my 3.55 for 4.56 running 30" 275 45 20 tires on my 2002 4.7. At 70 I am at 2800 rpms. I wanted better torque and I sure got it. Drive your car with the OD off and maintain 2800 rpms to see how it will sound and respond at 70 mph. Remember this is with 30 inch tires. If you put on 32s you will run at lower rpms. Personally I think 4.10 will be a mistake if you want a quick vehicle and you are running 32s.

Darn you and your burnout videos! :p
I am less than a 1000 feet above sea level. I tried the power-brake method and my truck just squatted and made noise. What gives? Anyways I guess I shouldnt be complaining, I should be happy my truck gets good traction. When I punch it off the line it just grabs and goes. We have the same truck minus a few mods, it must be the LSD working against me.

I just love it when people who have not done a gear swap in there trucks try to give their input. "Your gas mileage will go down on the highway blah blah blah." Both Kowalski and I have done the switch to 4.10's from 3.55's and our gas mileage actually improved.

8banger, it sounds like you have the much dreaded (for some people) full-time AWD. My 02 QC 4x4 has full time AWD with 3.55 gears and a few mods, and it will occasionally chirp them if you power brake it, but most of the time it just hunkers down & goes. Way to tell is if your twist knob for your 4wd has AWD as the normal setting (to the left).

I am really happy with the 4:10's in my truck. I can lay an EASY 6 foot patch with both tires just by blipping the throttle in gear. I havent really "raced" my truck at a strip, but my neighbor who has a Chevy 1500 with the 5.4 beat me pretty bad when I had the 3:55's and we "raced" yesterday and the Dakota ate him up with the switch to 4:10's.

GraphiteDak,
FYI, the elevation in the metro Phoenix area ranges from 980ft in the south west side of the valley, to almost 1300ft in the northwest side. I do construction engineering, so I have seen all the gps'ed elevations :-)

chris, thanks for the info. I have GPS but NEVER turn it on around home. Do you live in the Phoenix area?

BTW, I live in the NW area. Dysart/T-Bird and that is where the burnouts happened :p
But say if i drive to Payson at 5000+ ft. No burnouts unless I power brake it.

8banger. You didn't mention your altitude.
I also didn't notice you had LSD at first. Thought we were the same :p
I wish I had LSD. One thing about open is when you DO spin the one wheel only, it is multiplied. So that wheel turns like double the speed than if both were spinning!
Sometimes lately if I get on it and it does bust loose, it will just rap out almost like being in nuetral! It really burns it sometimes. If I hook up evenly I can usually take off pretty fast.

I wore out my stock 245/70 16's withing 15k miles or so from the off roading. I then got a set of 255/65 16's which are all terrain, but look like street performance tires :)
The burnout videos from months back (if you dig deeper into my web) are from when I was changing my tires, I finished off the stockers :)

Android. That IS funny. I'd have to say MOST of the ppl who have done the swap, SWEAR by the improved mileage.

Hey GD,
I live in Tempe. Near Riosalado & Dobson. Your area is right at 1000 ft +/-. Funny, My gal and I were looking at houses up in your neck of the woods not long ago, but with this heat and all, we are re-thinking of living in AZ. My folks live in Payson, and when Im up there Im lucky to get a chirp while turning...lol. My Dad has a new Ram 2500 with the cummins 600 and a 6 speed manual tranny, and he can burn the tires in 4 gears.

Sweet,... I've often thought of this question myself.

Question please...

I have a 2005 Dakota 4.7L with 3.92 gears, Should I just be happy and keep the current setup or would it be worth while and MONEY going to the 4.10's? just for a few 1/10th of a second?

Jimbo

My dad still lives there and I go there every few weeks or so. Yeah. Big diff in power. My truck still does ok up there tho.

Do you ever go to the track? I've been going to the drags at SpeedWorld. It may be a little further drive for you. But almost all freeway.

Hey GD,
I used to go to Firebird every weekend or so to race my sport bike on their road race track. I have heard about speed world, but too far. I ran the quarter in my Toyota Tacoma 2.7 4 banger 4x4 and ran a 15.898. Oh yea...I had a 65" Eaton blower on it. And I ran an un corrected 11.244 on my bike, so I dont want to run my truck, 'cause I know it wont be near any of those two numbers.lol What have you run in your truck?
Also, do you check out dakota-durango.com? I started a thread there for a Wrench-a-thon hoping to help members fix their rides, hang out, and what ever.

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad cab 4x4 with 3.55's. I want to get some 3.92's or 4.10's to help with pulling my camping trailer and a little off roading. I can't seem to find any for the 205mm front differential and the shop that have been talking to can't find any either. Can anyone help with a few places that I could get some? THanks much
Chris

Check out 4wheel parts. They will have the gears an dthey beat all others prices. The gear you need for the front is a Genuine Gear Chrysler 8" 4:11 ratio. Its the same as the 4:10.

The switch on my truck says AWD,4HI,4LO. But I thought under normal driving conditions it was using 2WD. I guess I am wrong. That would explain why I can't burnout. I also notice a gear whine under heavy acceleration coming from the front, that must be the front differential engaging.

GraphiteDak, you have the same year as mine, what setting does your 4X switch have?

Not sure on the horsepower loss, but I know for a fact it's 1.5 - 2 MPG. It sure does make launching off the line pretty much worry free. I thought about trying to find a regular transfer case, but wasn't sure if any other changes would be required.
