Subject: SuperChips, Worth it? any gains?
IP: Logged

Message:
has anybody tried the Super Chips Tuner for the 4.7L?

I have Headers, Cams, Exaust, Intake, and TB, should I get a superchip to get the most out of my mods?

does it work? and if any, what are the gains?

Does it let you adjust fuel/air or timing?

Yes it alters the fuel/timing and transmission shifts. It gives you 3 levels of performance to choose from. Stock, towing, and performance.

If you saw the posts months ago, and my dynos, and others,

apparently you don't see as much of a gain, with some mods already there. Meaning, your net gain, before and after SC only difference, will be less of a gain, than with a closer to stock engine. With that said, I still hung on to mine, it does dyno a reproducable gain.

my before SuperChips my 2001 4.7, 5speed-the kind you have to shift,
homebrew true cold air intake, with K&N drop in,
ported out 68mm stock TB (2001 model)
IATadjuster-usually off,
tried a run with it-NO GAIN
HO 2002 intake
HO cams
3923plugs
no belt clutch/fan
Mobi1 1 true syn
NO third cat
3.55rear end, 2wd, with the 16's tire and handling pack.
dynoed in 4th gear 1:1 after the tranny-not the rear end though.
Maxed at 218rwhp, at the Rear wheels
WITH SuperChips on perf setting, 93 octane
maxed ast 227RWHP, 301ft/lbs at the RW!

If I had 3.92rear end, I would have been a little more. You're not dynoing the crank on a chassis dyno, so even though you're in the 1:1 tranny gear, the rear end make some difference, that's why you see some difference by changing the rear end ratio.

A guy mostly stock, no Ho cams, etc, maxed at 12 HP gain, but his perf superchips max, at 212, was less than my non super chips #'s, so that's what I meant by adding the Superchips to the mods you already have.

I find the claim that you don't see as much of a gain with some mods already there to be very suspicious. This is what Superchips told you, right Todd ? I think that most of us know by now that mods have to work together to be effective; for example you don't just go with a big cam without the breathing or gearing to back it up. That's how to get the most out of mods. But your mods were well planned and work well together - better breathing, a reasonable cam for the weight of the truck - so I don't see any reason that your motor shouldn't respond as least as well as a stocker to more ignition advance. It just doesn't make sense - it seems you should see more of a gain than a stocker with each mod you now add that should be complimentary to your set up.

I would have to agree with you, but I'm just going by some dyno graphs. The only one I'm referring to are another one and mine, not exactly a big data base is it?

My non super chips, still beat his max super chips. That and his net gain, was more, vs mine. As I said, not exactly a good study though, but at least they were dyno graphs, of 4.7's.

Todd, how do I find your dyno graphs? I've been searching for two days and can't find anything current. I saw them when you posted them. I know they are there.

So, would Super Chips do these things?

1 - ) Improve Shift Points?

2 - ) Calibrate for Larger Tires? (I need this)

3 - ) and everything else it said?

I am not necessarily worried about HP and TQ gains, I just want to know if it will make my 4.7L run smoother, and help me get the most out of my mods.

Based on my experince (of one day so far) on my 4.7l/45rfe Durango...

1) yes, WOT shifts are in the 5,000 RPM range now, normal shifts are cripser
2) yes, in 1/4" increments
3) a little better engine power using 87, haven't tried the 91 tunes to get the full benefit.
4) with my combo I could change the speed limiter, but not the rev limiter.

deerridge,

I can't get it to come up either. Maybe the graph size or something. Probably b/c a fellow member posted it via his server at work I guess.

If you have a specific question, I can answer, or better yet, I could probably e-mail you the graphs.

MoparDak, my shift points are the same with or without the tuner. Since I had my TMR wire cut prior to the tuner, I can't comment on any shift firmness difference.

The "undocumented" benefit that I've found is that the low idle problem that some have (like me) when the AC is not on, does not happen with the tuner's programs in place.

I wish I could find something that would make the auto hold the lower gear longer when not getting after it. But I have yet to find anything.

nevermind, I have got some feed back from some friends, some said that the Superchips would help, and some said no,

I don't know why I was talking about shift points, I have a Stick, hahaha, so I shift when I want, but it seems that I lose some power when I take it to 5,000, but when I shift at about 4,500, or 4,800 I get it all.

Mop Dak,

Believe it or not, my dyno would say that what you said about when you shift, is probably a good idea. I quit taking mine to the rev limiter when maxing it out, mainly b/c of my dyno showing almost a 50% drop it torque at 6 grand over what it's at about 4ish.

in response to FUEL PRICES.. .is premium that much more expensive? figure out the anuall cost, its not too bad. on a tank average.... lets say, 20 gallons, times 20 cents more a gallon, thats only four measly dollars per fill up. lets just say you fill up every week, then its barely over 200 more a YEAR in gas expense...

I got a question.
Where'd the `05 Dakota get it's 230HP from?

I mean,... my `05 4.7l Dakota ST non HO from the dealer has 230hp and it's got a smaller CID being only a 287 vs. 318 CID.

So,... if anyone happens to know i'd be interested in listening.

Thank you in advanced.

I emailed SuperChip a few weeks ago about a chip for the `05 Dakota's and they said "The 2005 Dodge Dakota's were the vehicle that they were currently working on and to check back in the middle of summer" All my trucks that i could get a Superchip for had them. I havent heard much good about jet but doesnt matter to me because Superchip is the way i'd go anyway so if you can get one for your truck,... Get it. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed with it just having to buy the gas for it.

Jim.
